Red Arrow crashes during Bournemouth Air Festival
« on: 20-08-2011, 16:08:59 »
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-14602900

Eye witness report: "I heard a rushing sound and I saw a plane about 15m above the ground racing across the fields.
"It impacted and bounced across the field, made it across the river.

Sincerely hope the pilot survived!

Aerobatic has always been a high-risk business.

I hope Red Arrows can survive this. They have been threatened by budget cuts multiple times already. They are one of British Icons, just like the RAF, Spitfire, Harrier, Rolls Royce, and other great stuffs that are British.

Update: From what I've heard it happened as they were returning to an airport after the show. Something went wrong with the plane. The pilot ejected late as he remained inside to avoid having the jet collide with nearby houses.
Brave guy.

Yes very brave

Many years ago belgium still operated the mirage V.
There was a formation of F16's and Mirage V doing a show above sanicole. A Mirage V suddently got an engine stall and was heading towards the audience

The pilot had 2 choises=Either eject now and there was a 1% risk the plane could have crashed in the audience
Or he remained inside, steered away the aircraft..and had a 1% chance of surviving. The Mirage V had a 0-100 meters Ejection seat. Meaning he had to be OVER  100 meters to make a succesfull ejection

He chose to remain inside the plane, steered it away..He ejected at 67 meters altitude and the pilot died..But the plane crashed safely away.
