Tweaking the MG34 Lafette.
« on: 08-04-2009, 17:04:42 »
As you probably know, the current version of the sMG34 is limited in range and you're likely to get sniped by an ordinary rifleman if you try to engage on greater ranges, failing to suppress him due to having to reload after 50 shots.

Hence my suggestion to either

a) Increase the effective range to the real value of up to 1200m - 2000m.

or

b) Add 300 (250) round boxes, replacing the drum mag (which I've never seen on a sMG34 before).

I haven't used it quite often (and not quite successful).
You can't adjust the sightings target distance, can you?

I'm fully behind upping the ammo form the silly little drum to a 250 round ammo box.

Yeah the 250 belt box would be great.

Also i am wondering if the sights are correct? didn't the lafette have somekind of range markings on its sights? so you know for a target at 2000m you have to elevate the gun x degrees.

box magazine would be nice but you realize that most FH2 maps have max view distance of 500meters most of them less so setting the range to 1-2km would not be such a good idea  :P

At least up the range a bit. As it stands it is terrible.

I agree with the box
they never really used the drums
on the beaches of Normandy in the bunkers  they only had the boxs of 250 for the mg 42's
Ps the mg34 zwilling aa guns have the boxes but you dont see the ammo move as it gets fed into the gun.
Could you maybe fix that?
Ps in the 2.2 normandy maps could you give us the mg34 with drum, some maps but the majority the mg42 belt fed?

I'm for boxes on all German MG's, belt fed on static MG42 but box mag on bipod. Just for the sake of looks, it looks so bad if a 50 round belt is floating in the air while walking. And needs more animations too.
250 box would do yes making the Lafette somewhat more useful for surpressing tasks.

@Flyboy, what are you talking about? Saving Private Ryan? Believe me, in those big bunkers they had no MG's. Those where artillery spotting bunkers.

boxes are impossible on lafettes. Im surprised Von Murda hasnt already came in here and said that. Belts are a maybe but the animations look horrible because you realize you still have a full belt of ammo even though your reloading. Plus this isnt a movie. Dont spray bullets like no tommarrow. Laffetes are perfect for small and accurate 3-5 round bursts.

Adding the range markers on the sight would be nice.

Supressive fire isnt really what laffetes are for. Use them to take out targets. supress them by firing every few seconds in small bursts. might even get him to stand up so you can go for the kill. Leave suppresive fire to the MG kit.

supper good point so dont change them
just make it with a mg 42.
Ps how hard would it be to make a mg 42/34 deployable anti aircraft tripod?

Actually, suppressive fire is EXACTLY part of the use of the lafette.  They were specially issued with heavier barrels for longer sustained fire, and, when doing suppressive, were meant to be a hold the trigger down kind of weapon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vM7vV686Tc&feature=related

Go to 2:58.  Its hard to find true combat footage of mgs, much less lafette, but that is actual footage from the fj drops in holland.  There's another shot of that same crew, longer this time, at 3:20

Belts were used with lafette, the drum physically cannot be fitted on it.

It was accurate to 3500 yards, and from testing ingame with observers, it is right on ingame, you can hit targets 4 grids away accuratly.  Beyond that, I bet u can, but game limitations and such prevent you from seeing it.  The sight is also correct, a simple pyramid crosshair.  Range adjustment with it was done by preset degrees written on the degree plate on the tripod, and with the observer every gun crew had.

So basically, the things that need to be tweaked are:

Ammo capacity to 250 round belt
Less overheat

Now, far as I have heard, the MG42 version at least will be the 250 round belt.
