Title: Sunny side up
Post by: Ts4EVER on 16-06-2012, 21:06:56
Sunny side up

FH2 has its share of gritty, gloomy maps. But sometimes you just want to get out your butterfly net and stroll around on a sunny meadow or along a warm, mediterranean beach. If you are in vacation mood, this devblog might be something for you!

Crete

Graphics
Due to its unique gameplay, Crete was a fan favourite in both FH1 and FH2. Graphically however, it was not Forgotten Hope's finest hour, so Natty sat down and gave it a long overdue facelift. Take a look:

Gameplay
There also have been several gameplay changes. Some allied aa guns have been removed, to make it easier to land troops on the island. The rearguard flag was deleted to focus and tighten gameplay and several flags have been reworked to make their gameplay more interesting, especially Maleme airfield.

These changes will breathe new life into a Forgotten Hope evergreen.

Falaise Pocket

Graphics:
This map was introduced in Forgotten Hope 2.2 and has already received a facelift before. Now we are proud to show you its latest and last iteration, made by Remdul:

(http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/6139/fl1j.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/fl1j.jpg/)
(http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7501/fl3zc.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/217/fl3zc.jpg/)

(http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/9564/fl12.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/843/fl12.jpg/)

Gameplay:
The map has received a thorough gameplay overhaul in addition to the great new graphics. It was converted into a sector push map. The Germans first have to capture the church and the destroyed battery, followed by the first two flags in St. Lambert. The last sector consists of the St. Lambert west flag and the former Canadian mainbase. The Germans will not stop to bleed until all sectors are cleared, so aggressive tactics and teamwork are a must!

(http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/1920/fl14p.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/26/fl14p.jpg/)
(http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/3449/fl15.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/546/fl15.jpg/)
(http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/2633/fl16.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/155/fl16.jpg/)

Luckily, the Germans also bring a new toy into the fray: The StuH42 is a Stug III that has been fitted with a 105mm howitzer. It has all the fire power of a howitzer without the sitting back in the main base part!

(http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/4892/fl18d.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/801/fl18d.jpg/)

That's all for now, but stay tuned for more map updates!

StuH 42 :D.
Nice map reworks, are most older maps being reworked for this patch and or future patchs?

I can't wait for release anymore, so much to look forward too.

Dang, Crete now actually looks like a place where I'd like to spend my vacation (except for all the Nazis falling from the sky part :P).

Great job guys, and give us the release already, the servers are getting emptier every day (might have something to do with the summer and nice sunny weather, but still...)

Awesome. I especially like the StuH but also general graphical adjustmments are awesome. Invasion of Crete always was one of my favourite maps, the flag removal and other fixes hopefully make it even more intense and more of a real airborne operation than the operation of a lucky, lonely squadleader, hiding in the hills.

Fantastic work Natty! I'm so pumped that Falaise is getting some lovin' for the next patch. I love the way Falaise looks and "feels," but the gameplay was always a little off. The new sector push will really open up a lot of its potential :)

And butterfly nets eh? Here's to hoping it's an easter egg melee kit ;D I can only imagine what a close range fight between an "angry farmer" pitchfork and a butterfly net would look like haha.

Also: You guys are quite sneakily mentioning some awesome vehicles/weapons! The Sherman 105 on Cobra (a tank I have long yearned for in FH2!) now the Stug-tillery!

Will Crete come with deployable beach towels?

Does the Sherman 105 and StuH have sights like a tank? Only jumped in the Wespe on Villers once but as I remembered if you wanted to tank hunt your only bet was firing from chase cam.

This all looks so beautiful, by the way. Crete has always been a favorite of mine and I'm beside myself with excitement for Falaise.

Both Sherman 105 and STUH had normal tank sights and where used as direct fire support in combat

While a 105 is only "One size up" of a 75mm tank shell, its effectiveness is easily 3 to 4 times

Wow! Absolutely stunning! Server admins are going to have one hell of a time to create the new map lists for 2.45 as there are so many beautiful reworked / new maps! It's nice to see that new life is being pumped
to old maps! (All that remains is a new improved Aberdeen!)

Re Crete: I too liked fighting over the rearmost flag but we'll see what the new setup offers us!

@Devs: You really should include an Easter egg kit on Crete, Sfakia and Mt Olympus with a deployable towel...you enter it and your character will lay sunbathing  ;D lol! Great job on all the maps!

In the meantime, it seems that Axis are getting a few "secret weapons" in the next patch...  ;D

But for some reason StuHs failed versus tanks. Also the shell drop increases.

They arent ment to fight tanks. Neither the Sherman 105 nor the STUH. But if a HE shell of them lands on a medium tank, be dam sure it did some damage. It wassent a reliable way tough

The SU/ISU152 on the other hand.

Or the Brummbar.

The sheer beauty of the map itself is too distracting. No wonder a lot of players go lonewolfing: they wonder around the maps like tourists.

Wait I am confused, the StuH42 is an infantry support vehicle equipped with a 105 mm howitzer. So does that mean it will be capable of indirect fire? I would think it would be tricky to fire a 105 mm HE round in direct support without killing a couple of your supporting infantry.

Get behind me everybody, I am about to shoot!

Direct fire. To destroy MG nests, bunkers and other fortified points as well as soft vehicles and just plain infantry.

Edit: Yes, tanks too.

Alright, did yall put a pick-up kit with a butterfly net or something on there? I know of little unique kits like that - the molotov kit on Ramelle and the prisoner kit on Aberdeen - but I'm really curious.

Wait, prisoner kit? I've never heard of prisoner kit, though I've found several molotovs on Ramelle and 2 or 3 angry farmer kits on Villers Bocage....
