Tank sights
« on: 10-03-2011, 00:03:25 »
Can sb tell me why tank bullets go left of the centre of the sight, which makes it so inaccurate? I know that it isn't located directly behind the barrel, but I think that it was taken into account when it was developed....  ::) Its quite weird and annoying for me that bullet doesnt go directly to the centre of the sight...

Simple, it is just as yo said.  The tank sight is not where the machine gun and cannon are.  At short range, that means that the bullets and rounds do not travel far enough to hit exactly where the sight is pointing.  Usually, such sights are calibrated so that the sight cross hairs and the actual rounds will meet at about 500 yards or so.  So yes, FH2 has, and has always had, that perfectly correct

I've noticed that a long time ago, I knew that it wasn't a bug or somthing, but never asked why it was like this, it's good to know.

No, it's not centered as such. Its about 30cm or so to the left, or right, depending on the tank. But at about 500m, 30cm is not noticeable. But camera and gun point straight forward, so its easy to predict where it'll hit.

I meant, in real life, that is how it is calibrated.  Also, for instance, there were seperate sights for the HE and machine gun in the Pz4 than there were for the main gun (thank be to the book Panzer Gunner for that interesting tidbit).

why is the panther sight located to the right of the gun anyway?

On a related matter. Is there going to be some sort of fix for the axis tank sights?
Now they are less useful and more difficult for estimating distances than allied sights that have a distance scale.
It should be the other way around so that axis sight is easier, faster and more accurate for adjusting distances.
If it is not possible to add the setting-of-distance to axis sights, how about adding some artificial scale to the side or something.

So weren't there 2 sights in tanks for closer and longer range? It would be quite strange that it wasnt be developed in this way...

The sights were adjustable and/or they had means to determine the range and how much the shell would drop.

On the same note: is there a right-left deviation built in for the bigger guns (so besides the bullet drop)? I never really pay attention to stuff like that in-game, but for example the PAK40's HE shells never land in the same place twice.

STATIC pak40 should hit same place +/- some deviation.
MOBILE PAKs get knocked back a little due to recoil which makes  shooting the same spot twice harder.

Thanks. I always notice it on Totalize, on either the Flak battery or Windmill flag, where the one PAK can take out the other one across the river. You have to be pretty fast and accurate, because there's always a guy on the other team that's thinking the same. So at first I tried to remember the crosshair position but found out that's kinda useless with this deviation. And that's probably a good thing. ;)

Well, i knew the reason, but I didn't know why theres side deviation only in some situations - I mean closer range.  ;)
