AoE 2 HD edition!
« on: 08-03-2013, 11:03:52 »
Microsoft is not pumping out an HD edition of the forever epic strategy game Age of Empires 2!
By my opinion, the best LAN game.

People say AoE2 was part of their childhood. For me it has been part of my life, I never stopped playing it. I played it just 3 days ago. I consider it the greatest game ever made, and the one I've played by far the most.

I was interested when I first read this, but I just watched the trailer. Just a way for Microsoft to try and cash in on gamers nostalgia. They seem to be pulling a spielberg-Lucas. The changes seem to be pretty minor, just a few graphical brush-ups that it honestly took until the last half of the video for me to notice.

The only thing interesting about it is the simplified multi-player through steam, and the higher resolution. But the latter there are mods for.

I say no thanks.

They re-release a game from 1999 with native Windows 7 support, HD resolution support, updated graphics, updated multiplayer support and built-in modding support.

And this you call "milking the dead anorexic cow"? The human stupidity knows no bounds.

I know that is hip and cool to hate EA and such, but try to concentrate on real issues instead of trying to be edgy and "responsible consumer" just for the sake of it.

There aren't many RTS games released nowadays. This is an excellent opportunity to bring a great RTS game back to mainstream and introduce it to new players. If everything goes well, AoE 2 HD will be a success and more people will be interested in RTS games, allowing the creation of new titles.

I do not see any difference in graphics, units are still fairly low res to me and only ground textures look better...

Windows 7 support and multiplayer is nice though.

Loved that game back then with friends on LAN, someone made a map(scenario sort of) and then rest of us played it. Was fun though the only valid tactic to win was who spams fastest.

And people who have bought it 12 years ago will need to buy it again to enjoy those polishes to bring an ancient game up to date... Alright maybe i used a too strong expression but still to me that is milking an old cow.

Real issues such as?

Or maybe those people who bought it 14 years ago can mod their game to gain most of the upgrades. But for new customers it is indefinitely easier to buy the HD version rather than finding an original box and modding it to works with modern PC's.

And real issues.. how about the utterly fucked up launch of Sim City for starters. But even with that people should stick with facts.. the recent spreading of fake articles and such is not helping anyone. :/

PS. Let's also mention that I'll probably buy this at some point, most likely from a sale.

Yup it's only minor changes. Look closely and you'll see the water, fire effects and the trees are polished.

Still not enough to motivate 17€.

I recommend instead that you download the mods Age of Chivalry and Tales of Middle Earth. Really well made mods for the game.

If there is a sale, down to like 4€, I MIGHT buy it. Simply for the conveniance and as a safeguard if my 14 year old CD would take it last breath.

I came with the force of a thousand suns when I saw the title. Then abit disappointed when I saw the trailer. the graphics has not changed alot, but AoE II: AoK is still the best RTS game ever made. I hope many will buy it so that the morons at microsoft can understand that there's still a marked for a IV. the dismantle of Ensemble Studios must be one of the biggest blunders in gaming history. Too bad Big Huge Games are bankrubt. They made the awesome Rise of Nations game and Asian Dynasties for AoE III. if one company that would have been worthy to make a fourth game, it would have been them.  oh well. time will show.

I will definately keep my eyes open for a steam sale.

To me, AoE II was more like the San Andreas i bought after i liked Vice City so much. My best memories are in AoE and Vice city, and i just bought the newer one because it was nicer and had way more options which usually equals more fun. So yeah, it's better but do you all really have more nostalgia feelings towards AoE II than towards AoE?
And on topic, yeah the differences are barely noticable to me

I have to say, I always preferred Age of Mythology to AoE2.  It was a much more interesting concept and definitly has the best level editor of any of the Age series (I'm not a big multiplayer rts fan).

So, no, this doesn't really excite me that much - certainly not for £15.

Now you mention the level editor, i'm the only one who could never make the eemy players do anything in Age of Mythology? I made so many levels on AoE and AoE and they all worked perfectly but when i did it in Age of Mythology, the hostiles would never move or do anything, that how i stopped playing the Age of Empires series

Ah, iirc you had to go into one of the menus and actually assign that player an AI profile, otherwise they would stand around doing nothing.

I actually just recently started playing AoE2 (against my housemates) and AoM (on my lonesome) again.  Had to 'obtain' both of them because the discs I owned were long gone (more specifically, I still have the conquerors expansion CD and disc 2 of 2 of AoM Gold edition - neither any good on their own).

Sad i didn't know, but on the other hand, maybe i would never have played a FPS if i just kept playing AoE, so not all is bad about the fact i never found it, this reminds me of a game i had to abandon because new comps couldn't run it and the gamestudio bankrupted and couldn't make compatibilities for it. I didn't have internet back then so i never actually googled it, but i'll search for a sloution and if i can't find one, i might make a topic about it here. Thanks anyway for the advice Uranium, i might install Age of Mythology again if i have time :)

And 1 other thing: did you guys ever managed to build sea gates in the map editor like the ones you can destroy in the Constantinople map? I managed to make working sea gates by making a bridge between 2 points of land and the little piece of water between the 2 sections of land was enough to let a ship pass, but i just never managed to get the real ones  :'(

What i wanted to get:
