Title: Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
Post by: hOMEr_jAy on 17-10-2012, 16:10:48

Quote
“You have a sword and you want to hurt some people.”

- Basic concept of the game.

The game is skill-based and controls like a FPS, but instead of guns and grenades, players are given swords, shields, maces, battleaxes and longbows. Set in a fictional yet gritty and realistic world, players will fight in fast paced online battles besieging castles, raiding medieval villages and fighting for glory in the arena with up to 32 players.

The game was released yesterday and despite a nasty hangover I´ve already played several hours and enjoyed pretty much all of them.

CMW has a pretty unique combat system that differs from M&B and WOTR. Blocking and actually fighting is much more intuitive and fluid, yet still extremely skill-based.

One of the games main points is its great atmosphere and feeling. There´s lots of violence, blood and people screaming, the HUD is pretty minimal and the great Team Objective mode actually makes you feel like you´re a medieval fighter, looting, burning and pillaging or defending your good and true, yet a tad filthy peasants.

The game´s now available on Steam or can be directly purchased on the game website (http://www.chivalrythegame.com/blog/buy-now). Price is 25 US Dollars or 20 Euros.

TL;DR: Some good introduction videos from the beta:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfMTbbUGOgc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfMTbbUGOgc)

The game´s really lots of fun and despite having "only" 32 players max. it´s constant action. Catapults shooting rocks, arrows whirling through the air and players dueling for their lifes. Death can come pretty quick if you don´t pay enough attention!

Age of Chivalry was a great mod, but so far I'm not convince to pay 20€ for almost the same thing :/

Haven´t played much of the original mod, so I can´t really comment on the amount of changes. Best would be to watch some videos on Youtube.
Also, I heard that the game might be on Halloween or Christmas Sale on Steam.

Played 6 hours today and so far I really like the game. I even start to get into the blocking system and was able to have some nice duels with others. Feels good and very intense to have a long fight and to actually win it not by spamming attacks, but by blocking, dodging and slipping past the enemies defense.

Also, Total Biscuit did a comparison between WOTR and CMW:

The brave knights of the Kingsguard rally around their beloved king, me, to protect him from the Mason Order aggressors who wish to kill him and end his benevolent reign.

It looks more intense than WotR which I didn't really like. I might give this a go next week. :)

Close combat really is intense, once you get the hang of the combat system.
Joined a really good FFA server today, where you had to challenge people before fights. I had some really, really intense 1on1s, with parrying, feinting, ducking, shoving etc. What I also really like is how the length of a weapon affects your fighting style. I´ve met a player who was really, really good with polearms and actually breaking into his closer area was really difficult, especially with very short weapons.
You really have to pay attention to what your enemy is doing and react fast enough to block incoming attacks or to uncover a feint.
This is one of the few games that really suck me in, at the moment. Also the Objective Mode is really good: No lame conquest type of gameplay, but actual objectives that make you feel like you´re actually progressing. So far the game was definately worth the 20 Euros I paid.

I'm backing homer here, it is worth it's 20€ any day. :)
Bought it yesterday as I had half an hour to burn and liked what I saw.
The controls need some mastering, but I love the objective system. Even with random people fighting on my side we had a lot of teamwork going on. I even managed to kill some lads. I need to find out how to do a war cry though.... ^^ anyhow, by the Power of Greyskull...long live Man-at-Arms! ... oh wrong theme ^^

Push "c" for the mighty war cry. ;)

I also changed some of the attack settings. My mouse wheel is rather messed up and doesn´t work as it should, so I´ve put the 2nd and 3rd attack on my additional mouse buttons, which makes precise attacks way more easier.
A really useful thing I´ve discovered yesterday are feints. While winding up an attack, press "q" to cancel it again. Most enemies will block as soon as they see you raising your weapon and after their block you can stab them. Works pretty good.

I don´t really have much experience with the MAA, as I prefer the Vanguard or the Knight with two-handed swords or pole arms, but I´ve seem some incredibly skilled MAA using the dodge ability to mow down knights in just a few seconds. Quite spectacular.

Ok, so I got it.  Problem is, I can't view ANY servers.  Help?

Just follow their instructions and download and replace that file. Had that problem in the beginning, as well, but was able to solve it by doing that.

How does the Friends system work? I can't seem to be able to join via Steam.

Had no problems joining servers Mudra was playing on and vice versa, yesterday, using Steam Friends. Usually it works by clicking on the "join game" option in SF and immediately loads you into the game, if the server isn´t full.
If the in-game join option works, I don´t know, though.

Giving this thread a "Bump!". Chivalry is available on the Steam Autumn Sale and is 50% cheaper.

Not even 12 Euros is definately a good price and people interested in medieval combat should take a look at it.

New content patch has just been released, including new Team Objective maps, new weapons and (my favourite) the new duel mode. I´ve stopped playing the game pretty much after having unlocked all the weapons I want and after having spent too much time on the standard maps but this new patch looks like it´ll get me back into the game. Now if I just wouldn´t have exams in 2 weeks... :/

Looks interesting.First medieval game I see that isn't about orks, trolls, dragons and fairies or that isn't purely strategy.
But it could be about Rome...  :(

A number of total conversions has already been anounced and some are making good progress, from what I can tell. Among those are mods covering the Samurai-era and the Punic Wars. If those won´t fail for whatever reason you actually might be able to play as a Roman soldier.
I´m still rooting for a Dark Ages/Vikings/Anglo-Saxons mod, but I fear the subject isn´t popular enough. ^^

Saying that is just silly. There are so many examples out there, that are not strategy and not fantasy  ::)

Playing as samurais would be epic!
Maybe if they merged all the content... ;D

I have to admit, at first I liked it, but I slowly got bored and uninstalled it.  It seemed to have very little variety and was extremely spammy....

Punic War forever :D

Do you have a link to those mod ?

Sure, here´s the Punic Wars mod (http://www.chivalrythegame.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=7005), the Samurai mod (http://www.chivalrythegame.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=3067) and here´s the costum content subforum (http://www.chivalrythegame.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=51&sid=c37eb358a2483563004bd29e45de9436). I´ve got no clue how much progress all those mods have made, but especially us FH2 fans should have the necessary patience to wait for a mod. ;)
Mudra, I felt the same as you. I really love TO mode but after a while it got boring, plus I lacked the time to properly play (and still kinda do..) so I stopped playing Chivalry. The new patch seems to have added some new stuff that makes the game interesting, again. I´ve gotta give it a try later today, when I´m back from Uni, to take a proper look at the new stuff.

 ;)

One game to rule them all... It has everything you can imagine... Napoleonic era? 7 years war? WW II? Civil war? Lord of the Rings? Wild west? Star wars? If you can name it, they have it!

Too bad most mods are underplayed (although the official "mod-that-became-an-expansion" Napoleonic Wars and vanilla aren't and you can find a server any time of the day) and you are lucky if you can find a regiment that organizes events...

Mount and Blade became a modding heaven, similar to Valve's source engine... Except that it can handle many more players at the expense of things looking a bit uglier...

I picked up this game during the steam summer sales. I can highly recommend it if you can pick it up for a few €. It's plain and simple fun :)

I think I ended up paying  full price for it a while back. No regrets.  8) I do actually regret buying blackops  for 50% off... I just like the zombies I guess.

It's a load of fun.  Also, my own personal theory: The Mason Order is a cult of Chaos.  40K tie-in.

Sadly coming fromthe latest patches of native - it is now somehow "off".
Said that, i like DW because every 'class' has its own feeling. 3 spears 3 classes 3 different animations.
Bit they could have seriously given More thought at the customization options. 1 model 4 customizations - Blaeh!!
