Win 8 64bit.

I feel my rig is powerful enough not to touch any sort of optimization. I get jerkiness, but that happens due to my ping, about 80 is enough to fuck up your day with Refractor.

I have ping 70-110 4G modem + extended antenna. Dependig on weather. mostly around 80
nLite windows 32bit Multiboot for Gaming direct x 9 games
My rig is Uber clocked and tweaked.

I agree that overclocking is not for every one.
Fine tuning and tweaking OS system software is nesseary to get every penny out the pc you paid for-)

Win 7 64bit.  Pretty happy with it and have not noticed any problems.

Have previously used Vista 32bit and had no problems with that either.

Windows 8.1 of course, I don't like my CPU not being utilized to the full.

I have a dual booting system with 32 bit XP on one hard drive and 64 bit 7 on the other. With only 4 gig of RAM, I found that maps load much slower in 7, so I boot into XP to play FH2. I don't even have BF2/FH2 installed in my 7 installation anymore. I do pretty much everything else on my computer in windows 7 since I generally prefer that OS. I only use XP to play FH1 on pixelfighter and FH2.

my CPU not being utilized to the full.

What do You mean ?

Is cpu usage only 20% in taskmgr ?
Cpu is only running 2ghz, but I have a 2.5ghz cpu ?
Cpu is 4 core, 8 threads, but I can only see 1core or 2core utilized ?

Maybe there is a solution to your problem .-)

Windows 8 makes better use of the CPU than 7 in general.

windows xp 32 bit can only use 4gb ram + 4gb as ramdisk or cache in hidden memory if you have more than 4gb ram

when I run FH2 in xp 32bit, only 1.8gb ram is used incl windows cache. Its possible to cache FH2 files in hidden ram with software utility. But I dont know much faster load times is if you already use ssd as hdd

have not looked into load times win7 vs xp yet  :-)
To me its all about gfx and OS micro lag/stuttering.
Everything looks a little sharper and better in xp without vsync enabled when doing fast moves, like turning 180 or 360 degree in game

Windows 8 makes better use of the CPU than 7 in general.

I'd suggest Win8.1 for everyone, as it is less bloated with services & software. In that way, it does make better use of CPU & memory, or rather doesn't hog it all for itself. Gamers can benefit nicely of it. But there are things that are messed up or conciously forgotten, like ability to customize your Windows. You have to delve into registry these days to modify how Explorer looks like and even that is not 100% working. If you don't mind the fluffy look and limit your desire to modify it to desktop background and window border colors, take it.

Think of it as a streamlined version of Win7. People worrying about that big bad start menu, don't. I almost never use it since all the software I need is in Taskbar or else. And you can sort it out, have all that Win8 Modern interface crap cleaned out. Few tutorial videos and you're right at home again.

What I like most about it is working sleep mode. Win7 sleep always broke up after a while and needed a fresh install to start working again. They fixed something about that in Win8. They took a right step with the background stuff and I think Win10 is going to be a good one.

I have to run BF2 in compatibility mode and windowed or I get weird errors and crashes.  Getting BF2CC to work is also hopeless.  These were not problems with 8 but came with the upgrade to 8.1.  I wish I had 7 or could have kept 8.

After finding myself buying this dimmdrive software 27.99
http://steamcommunity.com/app/337070

Copies game files from hdd into ram and makes game load times a bit faster than ssd
Im starting to game direct x 9 games in win7 again :-)

It does not matter much in FH2 since fast mapload will just make you wait almost a minute in map start
But in other games like civ, nfsw, sfiw it almost removed load times completely :-)

Just needs that 16/32 gb of ram and the time to wait for the files to be uploaded to ram. I guess fast ssd is still a must to accompany that so that you don't spend too long waiting. Then again you're spending hundreds of $$ for some seconds/minutes of time.

You are right. But some seconds/minutes will some day become many hours
