Panzer III on Kursk
« on: 21-03-2010, 15:03:11 »
Since nobody of my mates wanted to go out yesterday(all have interms) i stayed home. After a while, i got myself into reading an big article of the Battle of Kursk (The entire operation)

After alot of reading, i read that Panzers III, Panzers IV, Panthers and tigers where the main german tank on Kursk

Now i first thought that those Panzers III where probaly Ausf N, but then i found this picture

I to be honest, cannot recall that ausf, maybe L?

Does anyone know what type's of Panzers III where used in kursk? And how much did they made up for german tank strength?

I think this is an Ausf. J. Mantlet does not match with the L nor does the track idler.

I don't have any numbers right now but I know that Panzer III armed with 50mm gun, even some 37mm was still quite common at Operation Zitadelle, especially in the 9th Army on the northern flank.
sPzAbt.501-505 consisted partly of Panzer III Ausf N's 1942-43 due to lack of Tigers to reach full strength.

Newsflash: German tanks did not turn into Panthers in 1943.

You should search about the "das reich" equipement during kursk. You will certainly identified the crew and the panzer.
the 2ss division only had 48 panzer 3 at kursk so if you have the tob then you will have your answer

Panzer III's were the most numerous tank the germans used in the battle of Kursk, as far as I remember.

How very true. I have a Reader's Digest Book of WW2 and it depicts the battle of Kursk with a huge picture of almost only Tigers vs T34s... no wonder that stuck in the back of everyone's mind. ^^

Bingo.  Its just the usual thing of the big heavy german tanks being stuck in the minds of people, while the Panzer 3 continued to soldier on, in some cases all the way to the end of the war.  J's, L's, and M's all saw service at Kursk.

very intresting
It seems that both Ausf J L and M where present, also the Panzer's IV where mostly ausf G so it seems but also F1s and F2's.

Did germans ever mount long 75mm gun on panzer 3? If  yes, what was it's name and did it ever see combat. Just curiosity  ::).

Yes, it was called the StuG III Ausf. F/G ;)

But really, no, I don't think so. The turret was too small, and you couldn't fit in a bigger turret.
