Rate my new gaming comp!
« on: 06-06-2012, 08:06:24 »
hey guys, just pieced together a new machine. Mostly for gaming. What do you guys think? Only ran me about $550-600. I waited for big sales and saved serious money.

I understand that its not gonna break any benchmarks. But so far its DAMN FAST and still plays all my games maxed out. Like BF3, Dead Island, and FH2 of course!

AMD Phenom II x4 980 3.7ghz $120
Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 Mobo $125
8gb Corsair vengeance RAM at 1866 $50
128gb Crucial M4 SSD $99
ATI Radeon HD 4870 1gb 256bit GPU <----Brought over from old system, Gonna upgrade
PC Power and cooling 600w Silencer MarkIII PSU(Old system never used more than 450w) $80
Corsair H80 water cooling kit $80
Cooler Master Storm Scout case $75

I plan to upgrade the vid card. Just gotta do some research to find some good ones around $200-$250.
And also to add more storage. Gonna RAID out some HD's for auto backups.

Sounds good, but I'd rather have gone for a lower AMD CPU and used the saved money on a top line AMD GPU. The X4 980 only gives you ~10% more power while eating up 20-40W/h more on your electric bill. A X4 965 will do the job almost as good and costs half the money.

Other than that, a nice upgrade.

All of the PhenomII x4's are 125w. Thats why I went with the fastest of the bunch.

I was looking at the new FX series but I read they are not true quad cores. They are duals with a controller that makes the comp see it as 4. I got a good deal on the CPU.

Thx for the advice! The biggest improvement has been the SSD. It bootss in 20 seconds. And things open immediately after clicking!!. Now to just get FH2 back on this machine.

Nice setup, AMD Radeon 6870 (very good price vs performance) or above on that and you have something very strong. Good choice on the CPU for gaming, got an overclocked X4 960T myself, it's very good.
SSDs, well, they kickass  :)

I would have personally gone with an i5 2500k, but that's not too shabby, being noticeably cheaper.

Yeah the I series from Intel surely gets all the benchmark crowns. But 3.7 quad for $125 is pretty good price vs performance. I always go AMD for price. Have never been let down yet.

Now just gotta add more storage and a new vid card. LOVE the water cooler, never gets above 39c.
