A lot of text
Wholeheartedly agreed! When I look at my kids Lego, there are some many customized blocks, that it isn't special anymore.
Too many round curves, whole premade blocks for a naval vessel, etc. Where is the fun in that.
I recognise the feeling, but aren't we simply getting old? Or is your kid also complaining about the nunber of customized blocks, NTH? ;)

Honestly, I still got a huge box of Lego in my basement, but I do not recognize half of those parts he is using for those tanks. They appear all new to me.

Plus: he is using an awful lot of flat tiles for the tank bodies.

In my days those were so rare, I had a very limited selection, evenmore in many different colors only. Sometimes you bought a whole kit for a single modern brick you wanted desperately. If I would have had that assortment of bricks, who knows what I would have created.

And I admit, my lego aircraft carrier was a bit out of scale, but still I had a lifting ramp, retractable wings and rotorblades on airplanes and helicopters and a well deck for landing crafts. ;D

Those smooth edges are not from that 'flat tiles' but rather a "house roof" like bricks.

IMO, this kid is doing great. They are all on-scale, even with the standard size human lego figures (go check out his M3A1 halftrack).

Regarding the customized bricks: well, he used most of them creatively. For instance, check out the detailed tank tracks and cannon designs. He mixed Lego Technic parts with regular system/themed parts.

Nah my kid got the gist of it. He is creating his own stuff. Got his whole bedroom full of it. It was just when I was helping, I was like damn is this piece one whole part ?!

But sure we are getting older. Music these days is mostly crap too  ;D

Do you want to be filled with nostalgia?

http://www.bricklink.com/browseTree.asp?itemType=S
scroll down and select by year. Now you can look at all the models by year. I almost cry from nostalgia, viewing boxart from models I had and wanted when I was a kid.

All these feels!

I think this was one of the very first Legos I had. Strangely I can't remember there ever was a parrot included.   ???

Ahh how I was always jealous of my cousin who had a big basket of every kit you could imagine while I only had a few...

I did not have a lot of that predesigned buildings, except my cool Lego Castle. I had a gaint box full of simple Lego bricks of different colours, but always enough of each colour to build what I want. Had more fun at building creative stuff than actually playing with that manikins :)

Also good job on that teen designing those tanks. I don't care what kind of bricks he used that much, you simply can't build a lot of this with the standard stuff, although I don't like those flat things that indeed distort the typical Lego look a bit - really great job anyway!

I too started with the things Dukat posted and ended up with a big lego city on some raised Particle board covering half my room, where I could wire the 12V Lego trains and signals + buildings from underneath  ;D  Now my nephews are playing happily with all those bricks and wires.  Aww, good times.

Also, the Lego Technic stuff with the motor was the best thing to build all sorts of crazy machines, even usefull for the kids when they leave childhood and enter a certain destructive phase during puberty :D
