Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim?

I don't think so. You might be more familiar with the world and the lore but it shouldn't be a requirement.
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim?
Post by: Paavopesusieni on 12-02-2011, 16:02:10
The stories have nothing to do with each other.

There might be lots of references to the other games/TES universe but you can do really well without those, you will get to know the world pretty well by playing the game. At least that's how it has been with other TES games.

You don't need to but you're going to miss out on some great game if you don't. At least try morrowind and oblivion. If you really like them the more hardcore earlier games are an option.

Post by: Sander93 on 12-02-2011, 18:02:30
I hope they will finally add better and more dynamic quests. That endless amount of 'go to cave or castle and collect/kill something' missions in Oblivion and Fallout 3 got old pretty fast.
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim?
Post by: luftwaffe.be on 12-02-2011, 18:02:18
I found morrowind to have generally better quests then oblivion. I also didn't like it that the quests in oblivion always had the same outcome. In morrowind there usually where more outcomes .

good choice.

And whenever you get tired of it, download some mods. TES are a very mod friendly games. One I really can recommend is nehrim

http://www.nehrim.de/

So when you buy oblivion, you're buying more then one game  ;)

I'm really waiting for this. Only advancement I wish they would make on new game, is better fighting system. Dark Messiah made first person melee right, I wish to see something atleast distantly similar. Oblivion melee was ridiculous bashing against enemy with way too much health  ::)

Godammit!

I'll have to buy a new PC for this game. heh. I guess I buy one for every new elder scrolls game. I sometimes think about just getting it for console because Im getting accustomed to the couch again, but the mod community was badass. Anybody ever see the "Unique Landscapes" mod?

Well they are all dead in Morrowind and they are called "Dwemer" ( at least I never saw one)

Anybody ever see the "Unique Landscapes" mod?

Sure, it gave Oblivion a little bit of uniqueness
Also I can advise you to use the "vardenfell imports mod" for morrowind gear

Dwemer were actually elves, sometimes called dwarves because they were associated with giants ;)

Hence my comment about missing dwarves.

^This. Although my say is that they NEED MOUNTED COMBAT.

After watching the trailer for the thousands time I've been thinking that if everything else sucks (and I'm sure it won't), I'd buy the game for just the soundtracks. But my favorite is still "Morrowind title".

Yes they need mounted combat, that always bothered me when I played Oblivion few years back (never actually finished it, I just like to get lost in the open world, and say screw the quests I'm going to steal
stuff and put it in my house... :P)

Also mounted combat is awesome, check out Mount & Blade: Warband

Never could get into Oblivion....But if this thing has move support I might just weigh this against BF3 for the sheer amount of awesomeness that move would bring to game like this.

Let me start this out with a really nice update from  Bethesda "aka the gods of RPGs"

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC to get mod tools, high-res textures and upgraded interface

Bethesda have been answering a few Skrim fan questions on their forums. Game director Todd Howard, lead designer Bruce Nesmith and lead artist Matt Carofano team up to reveal more about Skyrim’s PC specific features. We’ll be getting better textures, “larger render modes,” mod tools and a better interface. Bethesda promise that we won’t see a return of Oblivion’s enormous fonts.

“We’re packing a lot of info on the screen and the whole interface is much less ‘look at giant fonts!’ than, say, Oblivion,” write the devs. “There’s also a lot of “power user” stuff we do with the keyboard from how favourites work, to quick saves, and more that is similar to what we’ve done before in that area.”

“The PC version also gets higher res textures, larger render modes, and a bunch of other effects you can scale up if your machine is a beast,” they add.

We already know that Bethesda plan to release The Creation Kit soon after Skyrim comes out, but the mod tools are one of main reasons Skyrim will be better on PC. ;D Oblivion and Fallout 3 have been completely transformed by the modding community. For modders, Skyrim’s release will be more like the birth of a new platform than a game launch. We eagerly await the first mod that lets us ride a dragon.

“Modding the game and making it your own is very important to us and our fans,” write Bethesda, “so we’re going to keep doing whatever we can in that area.”

The only thing we won’t be getting is a 64-bit specific exe. The game’s due out on November 11 this year.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has 70 voice actors, players free to explore from start
(http://media.pcgamer.com/files/2011/06/Skyrim-Story-Thumbnail-627x246.jpg)
Lead producer on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Craig Lafferty has told CVG that the Skyrim will have 70 different actors voicing all of the parts in the game, compared to just 14 for Oblivion. The variable quality of the voice acting and constantly repeated dialogue was one of the main bugbears for Oblivion players, who will be glad to hear that Skyrim’s 47,000 lines will be shared between a small army. Not having to pay Patrick Stuart and Sean Bean is likely to have helped.

Speaking for CVG, Tim Clark asked Lafferty how Bethesda plan to make more convincing cities for Skyrim. He mentioned that “we had, I think, fourteen voice actors on Oblivion doing all the voices. In this one, we have seventy different actors doing all the different voices, over 47,000 lines, so we work to make that a variety there as well.

“Hand crafted” towns should make Skyrim’s world more interesting to explore, which is useful, because Bethesda expect players to go off on their own. Lafferty said that the main quest could be completely ignored in favour of pure exploration.

“We’re really big on ‘go where you want, play where you want,’” he says. “It’s really apparent when you come out at the very beginning of the game, you can follow the main quest, we want to guide the player along with it. You don’t want to do the main quest, then, totally, it’s one of the main things with the Elder Scrolls series, the freedom of this world.”

Lafferty also confirmed that the main story will take about 30 hours to complete, but hundreds of hours can be spent exploring.

I predict that stores here will sell them on the 10th due to 11/11 being a holiday. They sold BF also 2 days before the official release. The stores have the game already in their storage, and will start to self out in the afternoon of the 10th, I'm sure about it.

Not that it will matter much ; skyrim needs activation though steam, and will likely only allow it from 11/11

After more playing I must admit that the menu system is kind of simple and awesome. THIS GAME IS WORTH MY MONEY! It's Game of the Year for sure! The storyline is thrilling, the world is gorgeous, the weaponry is huge, you can even mine and craft your own armors, weapons, jewels, etc. You can also upgrade your armor with for exemple leather straps. It's just such an huge improvement over Oblivion!

If you never played any Elder Scrolls before you won't have any problems with this one, if you like free world RPGs where you can say "f*ck off" to the main storyline and do side quests for hours and hours and explore the over 350 places (dungeons, caverns, castles, etc) of that game then it's for you. The game is quite newbs friendly, it's also easier to understand than Oblivion.

The only let down for me is the fact that the BattleMage class is quite killed by the fact that you can't block while having a spell in one hand and a sword/mace/axe/whatever in the other. I'm sure they'll fix it, or mods will fix this quickly enough. Otherwise there's a freaking huge load of new spells and weaponry. The new ways to earn money like jewelry, mining, crafting, hunting are awesome. More to discover! :D

Evidently our Wal-Mart is not currently stocked with PC versions of this game, though upon looking on Wal-Marts website, they only list the fancy Skyrim edition for 149.99 US, I just want the $63 regular game, which I can only buy for PS3 or Xbox (of which I have neither). Discrimination...

If you´re not sure about it, buy or borrow an older Title of the Elder Scrolls or Fallout3/NV for 10 Bugs or less.

No one can know if you like it or not, since everyone has his own special meanings about Games and everyhing.

Graphics and resource management are a bit lacking, but that's it. Huge amount of options and stuff to do. Wonderful game and much better than Oblivion. Not so much graphicswise per se, but much more refined and finetuned. One can't waste money on this, quality product, GOTY probably and perhaps even the best RPG to date.

Guys I have some tips here.
-------------------------------------------
Don't be disgusted by the consolised menu, you'll be familiar with it quick enough.
-------------------------------------------
Open console (the key under escape)

Write : SetcameraFOV 90  (or less, or more)
-------------------------------------------
You can favorite weapons or others in your inventory and the press "Q" to switch quickly between them
-------------------------------------------

This game is awesome, see you around  :)

The new interface takes a bit of getting used to, but it's very good. I really like the font and look. I caught myself skipping back to my own inventory to check if my weapon was better or worse than the one I wanted to buy, then I noticed the - and + when looking at the stats of a new weapon. I noticed it earlier, but it was so minute and small, I though it was something else  ;D

Simple = good.

Yeah, its a new interface, but it is a good one

Skyrim is much improved over previous bethesda games. The NPC's are tonnes smoother now, the world is very nicely done, the atmosphere is nice. Yeah, this will be game of the year.

Interface is bad, but the new HUD looks great (there is almost no HUD) which helps immersion alot. I found out you can still use quick keys by adding stuff to your favourite items first and pressing a number key when you hover over them in the favourite menu. This resolved most of my immediate interface issues. Graphics are underwhelming, some vistas are breathtaking but get close to anything and the low res textures make it look like crap. I've done a few quests including a random one from a shopkeeper which was really interesting and lengthy so this bodes well for the more important quests.

Modders need to fix a Bethesda game, well nothing we aren't used to.

Holy crap thanks for the tweak Farks.

Also I just got chase by a dragon in the mountain! That was thrilling and scary, hearing the roar and seeing it flying over me. Then he landed and spout some fire at me, lucky was I there was a gap between 2 rocks where I hide and saw the fire going across where I was standing. He finally left, then I went in some kind of pine forest where there was a big spider. Killed it and thought about something :

If you go in a pine forest try what I did. Find any kind of thing in your house that smell pine, you know like the thing we hang in cars, or some scent. Pump up your volume and hang the thing on your neck or put a bit of scent bellow your nose = total immersion.

I also had a freaking epic mage battle with some kind of gobelin race called Falmers. Having healing spell in one hand and fire in the other :)

I run this game smooth on HIGH with THESE SPECS!!! :

One thing I thought was really cool was that you start out having presumably been caught up "crossing the border" by Imperials searching for rebels near Pale Pass, which was a location in Oblivion. So if you want, you could create the same character and let there be continuity.

Oh yeah, the rest of the game is amazing too. :3

In most ways its closer to Oblivion than it is to Fallout, but the core gameplay is a lot better than Oblivion's was-in fact, it pretty much feels like they took Oblivion and just fixed all the major problems.

That being said I was never a huge fan of Oblivion either, and I really like what I've played of Skyrim. The combat is vastly improved(it no longer takes 30 arrows to kill a rat, for example), and the leveling system has been changed so it doesn't promote jack-of-all-trades type characters so much as Oblivion's did. However, it's still a sequel to Oblivion and the basic concept of wandering around doing quests is pretty much the same.

Played for like 40 minutes and so far i'm really disappointed. Sure the game is great but I can't get over the fact that it is a port from console to PC... I know, you seldom notice that while actually gaming, but in the chat menus, inventory menus and main menu you really notice. It may seem minor, but that honestly completely ruins it for me. The game doesn't feel fluent when I all of a sudden have to use go through a cumbersome inventory.

Also, I just recently finished Fallout New Vegas, and my motivation for creating a dynamic character from scratch again is very low. So maybe I'll just take a break and pick it up in a month or so.

I´m really tempted, even though I´m not such a big RPG fan, because I´m looking for a new PC singleplayer game that I can play for some time, unlike those other short ones. :/

Yeah it's very far from for exemple Final Fantasy or World of Warcraft, you have your weapons on the hands and use them like in a FPS. It's basically a FPS with magic and swords lol.

Great fight with a necromancer this morning! I was dispatched to the cave to retrieve a helmet, and I found a Necromancer who was summoning ghosts and keeping a bunch of Draugr's alive. These necromancers bring disgrace to the world of magic, and so, I felt it was my responsibility as a mage to end his life, for the betterment of the magic world.

At first glimpse, the battle seemed easily won. Just him and one ghost was all that stood in front of me, carefully sneaking into position. Using my Imperial Bow, I fired an enchanted arrow at him, hoping for a instant kill, but was distraught when I saw him calling upon his ghost to attack me. I quickly switched to my fire spells, and let the ghost have my worst effects. When she was dispatched, the Necromancer was nowhere in sight. As I came into the room, he cast an ice blast at me, and upon realizing the amount of health it had taken away, I sprinted across the room for cover.

Switching back to my bow, whilst he now took the high ground on the far side of the room, I ducked carefully being an ancient throne, and let his icy blasts slam against it, instead of me. From behind this chair, and the adjacent stone pillar, I carefully returned fire with my bow. However, his aim was good, and hit after hit had its effects. With my magicka running low from the amount of healing I was doing, I was sure I was going to die. I fired one last arrow, that flew through the air and struck him in the head. His body fell off the escarpment and onto the floor, and I could take a moments rest.

Ended up choosing norse, because, well... vikings are awesome and I'm from Sweden. I really want to play as an elf to be a real good archer which I love, or a magician since I don't want to loose out on any magic powers... :(

@Tedacious - You don't need to be an elf to be good with bows, they aren't better. The only thing that races do is that each race has a special power. Nords is warcry, Khajjit is being able to see in the dark, for exemple.

@THeTA You can find the furnace at cities, it's called smelters I think. You refined you ore into lingots there, then you can make armors, weapons, jewels, etc.

@Archimonday Nice combat! I think you'll love a litte quest in Markarth where you fight a mage in a abanndoned houser, in the dark, epic lights and objects flying around :)

The Freeing of Thorald  ;D

The air in the northern mountains past the reach of Solitude nips at your face, numbs your fingers, and makes breathing difficult. Here I was sent, to a fortress in the north, where Imperial Guards held prisoners of the Empire. Northwatch it was called. Proof gathered from Whiterun led me here, but I chose to come alone, others often burden me in my adventures. From above the prison seems small, a wooden palisade lines its eastern side, and turrets are commanded by archers, too many men for me to take on at once.

It was my goal to do this peacefully, without bloodshed, but the guards at both the front and rear entrances insisted that no man would be freed from the prison without imperial decree. It was thus necessary to use force. I fell back from the castle some one-hundred-paces, hiding myself in the blizzard and taking cover behind the trees there. Their elven armor was thick, and the hopes of my arrows striking a deadly blow in one hit was minimal, but it was the best chance I had. Two guards stood between me and the keep, where Thorald, the brother of a gray-mane, and my target, was being kept. My enchanted bow delivers an icy sting to its arrows, which delivers them with devastating results. Thoroughly lost to the guards sights, I take up a position on their flank, and aim carefully.

As the arrow leaves the bow, the feathers brush against my fingers, the whole world seems to stop in one instant, did I just make a mistake, or will I conquer these foes? The arrow strikes the first guard, he staggers, an arrow is spiring from his chest. I fire again in haste, and miss. He sees me now, and he calls upon his other guardsmen to aid him. A third shot takes him down, piercing him in the heart. A forth shot hits his companion, but it does little, his armor deflects the round. I toss my bow aside, and call upon the forces of destruction. As he gets closer he casts a fury of fire, to stop this burning onslaught I respond with the roaring thunder of a shock attack, it drains all his magical energies and wounds him severely. I draw my enchanted sword, and whilst he staggers to his knees from the lightning, I thrust it into his neck. The other guards atop their towers rain down a hail of arrows, but I ignore them, and sprint wildly past. Three more guards are dispatched within the hallways of the fortress. Once they are dead, all becomes quiet. I search frantically for a key to free the prisoners, but none can be found.

Levers on the walls, connected to chains hint at their release. I pull both and the prison doors swing open. Most prisoners stay idle, they have been imprisoned so long they do not know what freedom is. Still there is no sign of Thorald. I turn the corner, a torture chamber emerges, inside, an interrogator. On the far wall Thorald kneels, chained by his hands to the wall. The interrogator is a master of magic however, and summons fire demons to his aid. I work around the demons, concentrating my shock abilities on the interrogator, praying that his energies will drain. My health runs low, and with no alternative I sprint away down the hallway. He follows close behind, and more guards can be heard storming up the staircase. Now is the time to get away! As he comes down the hallway, the freed prisoners storm from their cells and surround him. Two more Imperial Guards respond to the prison break, and become caught in the brawl as well. I have not much time, but see my opportunity. I storm past the brawling foes and into the room where Thorald is being held. I say little and free him from his bounds. We digress down a side hallway towards an alternative exit, whilst the guards, having now dispatched the other prisoners follow close behind. Bursting through the front gate of the fortress I fire an arrow that wounds another guard. Thorald stops me, and thanks me for his release, but informs me that he will not return home. I leave him to his devices, and flee from the guards, as now, five more approach, and I cannot fight them all. Thorald flees into the forest.

Has anyone done forbidden legend quest on PC? I'm stuck in Folgunthur, because for some reason I can't loot the boss dragr. He should have quest item with him, arrow points to him, but I just can't bring loot menu up. I tried google but no one else seems to have this problem...

Edit: NVM. Autosave from all the way back in dungeon start fixed it.

I'm still waiting for an Elder Scrolls Game to be made, where the Empire has been reunited, has gone through a technological evolution (which involves musketry, blackpowder), the scenery and the atmosphere changes to that of the mid 18th-Century, and the whole Empire is in the middle of a Spanish Inquisition type of religious persecution, where worship of all 9 Divines has been outlawed, and replaced by a false monotheism that the Emperor has installed, all Magic is banished from being practiced or taught, and Bretons and other Mage type races are being imprisoned and killed by the thousands, as well as Kahjiits, Argonians, and Elves. Leaving just the humanoid races as the prominent beings in Tamriel, and all the while the Empire is able to do this due to the fact that it has imprisoned a man of legend, who, using his abilities from atop the Imperial palace in Cyrodiil is able to deny the mystical forces of the gods from having influence over the people, and your whole goal is to survive in this hostile environment, and free that man, and restore the 9 Divines power, and the legal worship of Magic and other banned crafts such as Enchanting, and Alchemy.

I'm using a Orcish Bow which makes the undead flee. Up close I use healing in my left hand, no shield, and a Lunar War Axe in my right hand, which does extra Fire Damage if the moon is up.

I have a nice house and some bodyguards too, yet barely scratched the surface of the game. I bought a horse too, but I unmounted on a mountain path and it took to the skies (bug) like a dragon... but unlike dragons, horses cannot fly, so that was an expensive horse firecracker, worth 1000 credits. It did spawn back at the horsetrader, but for another 1000.

I didn't reload, no more horses for me ;) Hunting (using stealth bow shots) and mining is quite profitable, use that smith gear. I have a nice collection of jewels too, but I'm saving those for later.

Have yet to kill a Giant, nice kill shot there TheTA0123. My primary tactic concerning them = The Thane of the city will RUN ;D

I did notice that aswell. the landscape feels more natural and varied, and they cut back quantity for quality dungeons. Well maybe they didnt cut back quantity, but theyre definitely much better. I'm really liking the game. Has anyone else fought the bug people under that lighthouse up north?

I'm currently rocking a Scimitar and lightning combo as my go-to setup. I add a shield if the fighting calls for it though. Proper use of shield bash can work wonders against tough opponents. :)

I love having my own personal slave (Lydia) to follow me around, my wanderings and quests do not feel lonely like in Morrowind or Oblivion.

She saved my life a number of times, in my first encounter with giants I was not sure if they were going to be friendly so I went to their camp and tried to talk to one.  One swing of the giant's club took me to about 10 hp and I realized I had no chance.  Luckily she provided a distraction to the giant for long enough to let me get of a head start as I fled back to town.

Crazy world! I ordered the boxed version of Skyrim on Amazon.UK Sunday evening and just got it from the mailman! Now I´ve just have to install it. Unfortunately I´ve got to leave for university in two hours and won´t be back untill tomorrow afternoon. >.<
Oh, nasty first world problems!
EDIT:
After a quick install I played for an hour (gotta leave for university in a few minutes) and so far it´s really nice. The "left hand/right hand"-thingie is a bit unfamiliar and I still have to spend some time figuring out which hand I´ve just equipped. But I guess I´ll get used to it with some time.
The graphics look nice and the intro was cool, too. Only some of the animations look bad (like chars gliding on the ground for example), but otherwise it looks nice. I can´t wait to get home tomorrow to continue playing! :D

What you can do homer, to make it easy on yourself. Is open up your items and magic menus, and use the "F" key to favorite those items. Them while walking around, you can hit "Q" to bring up a favorites menu of all the favorite items. Then for even quicker changes, while holding down "Q" and surfing through the favorites menu, hit a number on your Numpad or upper keyboard, and one will appear next to the item. Then, when in-game, just hit that number, once for left hand, twice for both hands. To mix it up, select your right hand weapon first, hit the number twice, then tap your left hand weapon once.

I have noticed quite a few references to Martin's works too. :) Some of the book titles you come across for instance (always multi-volume XD). Ice wolfs? All the major houses behave like the houses of Westeros, and have their own animal sigils... I think Bethesda employee's are likely fans. I might mention that the whole college is like a reference to another book series many people tend to read. ;)

I am very intrigued by the dwemer ruins I've come across so far. I dont remember anything about them from Oblivion.

Another thing I've noticed is the adoption of many of the most popular features from Oblivion mods. For instance the crates and stuff open when used and tell you if they're empty, ingredients disappear when harvested (in fallout I know), there's a decapitation perk at higher levels that came from the Deadly Reflexes Omod...

One at Whiterun was 5000 gold. You can buy the house from Jarl's assistant. If you want furniture, they cost about 100-400 gold per set and you need maybe 4 or 5 sets to fully furniture. Other cities offer bigger and better houses  ;)

The first troll I encountered had me running and using my magic attacks to whittle him down. Luck was on my side though, and a band of four Kajits targeted the troll and started wailing on it. One of them went down, and I added my flame to help finish it off. Turns out they were brigands, and not thankful for my assistance.

With my magika depleted I quickly switched to my melee combo of Scimitar and shield. This is where I realized the new depths combat gained in Skyrim. Instead of all three rushing like in Oblivion, two of them took defensive stances and I finished off the one that charged me, who was weak from the troll. I settled into a defensive stance and the two remaining separated and closed in, sheilds raised. The basics of the combat feel much more authentic. The option to shield bash, the limited amount of stamina for power attacks, enemies who block and attack in balance, in stead of just one or the other...and facing two opponents toe to toe would end badly in the long run.

So, having magika built up, I retreated while healing, the brigands following closely. After healing I had a enough magika left over to make use of the distance Id gained and shock the nearest one, finishing him off with a flurry of slashes with my scimitar.

Now it was down to just the two of us, trading blows in an empty snow swept steppe. With no magic, depleted stamina, and limited health, the fighting becomes tactical, and I have to say, fun. Timing blocks and cuts, dodging, and deciding to use your stamina for a shield bash to stagger and follow with a quick cut, or swing harder with a power attack, all come into play. When I finally finished off the last of the quartet, I felt like I had achieved something, even with an encounter so often experienced in Oblivion. Sheathing my bloodied sword had a nice feeling to it. :)

Skylight -  ;D

The various caves and tombs of Skyrim have long been infested with all variety of creatures, from trolls to cave bears, and even dragons. However there is no occupant quite as terrifying to me as the Frostbite Spider. Hailing from the same genus as their smaller cousins, the Frostbite Spiders create large nests, infested with their kind, and covered in all areas by a web so adhesive, that even the strongest orc would have difficulty freeing himself from it. When one invades their nests they are far from docile, and if one cannot manage to sneak his way through the nest, one could find themselves trapped. They come in various sizes, some smaller than others, but none ever small than a skeever. All of the Frostbite Spiders are female, and are able to reproduce asexually, which assures there is never a shortage of them to be found.

Nevertheless, I was dispatched to a cave near Riften, to retrieve a magical sword, who's location I had learned of from a book. It was night when I arrived, and through the light cast by my magic I could see a dark figure at the caves entrance. Upon closer inspection the dark figure was revealed to be a mammoth, ensnared by the unmistakeable webbing of the Frostbite Spiders. With my fearful weakness towards them, my heart instantly sank. As I entered the cold, damp, darkness of the cave, bow in hand, I could hear the shuffling of spiders feet. It is a sound which could terrify any soul. As I crept around the corner, my eyes first set on the smaller of the three spiders, and I proceeded to draw my bow slowly, keeping my noise down. As the arrow flew through the air a whistling rang through the cave. The spider died instantly, but the shuffling feet now changed their tempo. Through the small corridor rushed what seemed to be twenty more, and though I fired my bow as fast as it could be drawn the horde closed in around me. I abandoned the bow for a moment, resorting to my firebolts instead to clear the path. When all were dead the noise ceased and the cave was silent.

My heart by this time was pounding in my chest, like the steady beat of a bass drum, and I became even more cautious. A curiosity then struck me, as I came around the next corner. A dead body lay before me, some twenty feet away, behind it, a chest. Wanting whatever was in the chest, I approached slowly into cavern. As I crept slowly towards the body, I was thrown back by my fear. From the ceiling came a giant of a spider that landed beside me. It swung its arms wildly at my face as I bounded back and readied my magic. Blasting away with firebolts I backed my way into a corner as he came ever closer. With not hope left, and his bites now upon me, I swung my sword wildly, caught up in a fearful panic that blinded my judgement. The sword did little, but with my magicka now replenishing I fired one last firebolt into the beast dropping it dead. As my heart came down from its adrenaline pumped high, and my fear dissipated, his eyes, now lifeless, stared at me. It was the single most terrifying moment of my time here in Skyrim.

The most interesting thing that happened to me last session was randomly being accosted by a drunken Kajit that tried to fist fight me to death in the middle of nowhere during a snow storm. I dont know.

Thanks for the hint, Ajappat. I´m going to investigate that college as soon as I get there, but at the moment I´m climbing up those 7000 steps and during my first try I got smashed by an Ice Troll. I´ve already killed a troll, poisening and paralyzing it, so I´ll have to try this. Obviously going into a mellee with an Ice Troll is a bad idea. ^^
Btw, do you guys follow the main quest or just go wherever you want? I´m not fully accustomed to so much freedom, so I try to follow the main quest as closely as possible.

So, my fancy mask started to look like this:

Edit: @ Homerjay: If you just need place to leave all the stuff you don't want to carry with you, but either don't wanna sell, you should think about joining to college of winterhold. Mercenary group in Whiterun might also give housing for free if you join them, not sure about them tough.

Haha, you too eh? Mine fixed itself eventually:

I'm going to see if I can mod the Arch Mages robes to look more like the Adept Robes of Destruction though, I don't like that huge beaver tail thing on them, it ruins my look.

I have to say I'm impressed with it.  Played about 3 hours this morning and basically got lost in the story.  Even on low settings it looks beautiful (though I suffer from low framerate at times).

Having done a bit of the main quest, I now plan to start poking around the side quests and getting a better feel for the world at large.

It's a new game, so developers tend to expect new hardware and splurged in a lot of places. I'm on an older core2duo computer, and I have everything to low (except textures of course >_<). Even for this I have to overclock my poor 9500, but I have it running smoothly. One thing I notice is that some dungeons/rooms will have dropping water or lighting or something that murders the balance I've achieved. Most will be fine but some have messed up performance. This may be what you're experiencing.

I'm currently stuck in a quest, as well.
After joining that Brotherhood in Whitehall I went on the first big quest, retrieving a lost horn from a dungeon. Most of it was alright, fighting wights and some Silverhands.
Unfortunately, the main chamber is a tough nut to crack.
At one point my fellow (and furry) companion and me get swarmed by heavy armed and armoured Silverhands who lots of damage and by Draugrs, who attack anyone on sight.
I've tried it for a few times, but failed miserably.
What happeny if I take my companion back to the exit and continue the quest later, when my stats are better?
I've also ascended the 7000 Steps, killed my 2nd dragon and that nasty ice troll. :D

I honestly didn't find this place all that hard.  Try using the silver swords that the enemy dudes drop on the draugur (also apparently fire also is effective).  Quite easy to spot which draugur will get up, so just give them a charged hit before they do.  The final chamber I did purely by chance really - my framerate dropped and I was forced to use obstacles in the room to funnel the draugur onto your friend, that way you only have to kill a few.

Robbing the Jarl's advisor in his sleep is a bad idea to say the least. But I think the Jarl still likes me though, I just fled the city after knocking the advisor and a guard out. Did stole over 100 gold in loot. Ha!

But yeah, honestly I think stealing shit is the best thing in this game. Picklock a house, take everything that's shiny, leave unseen. One of these days I'm going back to Dragonreach for that steel shield in a display case.

Yeah the Silver Hand guys were really hard for me too, if you're really struggling hard with the leader use this in the console :

Open console
Click on him
Enter : Kill

Magic fights in General are far better. The Wards are much better, and the enemy casts them more readily, voiding most of my attacks, and god forbid he has lightning and drains my magicka while I'm trying to break his ward, because then I'll be out of Magicka before I can deal much damage, and have to withdraw to regain energy. Some of the best fights I have are with Necromancers, they do all this, while simultaneously raising their comrades from the dead, and summoning Skeletons and other undead to their will. So now I have to contend with the melee threat, but also the fact that they are using protective magic.

Usually a fire cloak can deal damage to the melee enemy while I focus on the main Necromancers, but I find myself relying more and more on stealth in the game, since now I can deal 15x the normal amount of damage with daggers, sneaking up behind someone and getting a one hit kill is easier than having to fight large mage vs mage battles against any type of Mages, ESPECIALLY Dremora (who are far more deadly in this game than in Oblivion)

This game manages to suck me up every time I play it.

Personally I felt that oblivion was kind of a drawback in the TES series. It was an ok game but it "lacked something" that morrowind did had. The details in the ruins for example: you never got the idea that an old civilisation lived there. no cups, no ancient ceramics, just your ordinary (leveled) loot. And in oblivion, even ordinary crooks ended up with full deadric armour worth 20000 septims (and they then ask you to hand over 100 septims to feed their family °-°)

But not this game, I'm totally lost in this world, just like in morrowind. I finished the Imperial quest line already after 2 days ending up with the recap of winterhold. I found the quest very good, very epic battles. Also I like it that the vallue of rare items has returned : In oblivion once you had lvl 30 you only found ebony/glass/deadric armour, making their "rare" factor redundant.

In skyrim rare does mean rare.

here is my char. I'm level 32, but still wear my good old imperial armour

The Greatest Warrior? -  ;D

After a long period of time ignoring the hold of Morthal, I finally took the journey there, destined to find the pieces of Mehrunes Dagon's mythical razor, a short dagger with the power to kill instantly if used correctly. Skyrim, though it had lasted near a week without a snow storm, now fell back into the darkness of the blizzards which block out the sun and hold people hostage to their wintery sting. Entering into the town down the snow covered road which led from Dawnstar, a group of people had gathered outside the Jarls long house, and an argument was ensuing. I am not one to interfere with the business of the holds, and though I helped restore Imperial rule over Skyrim, I mind my own business and let the argument dissolve.

Curious as to the nature of the argument, I approached a Nord man. Our conversation soon drifted however, from the argument that had just taken place, to a bet about who was the better warrior, a brawl seemed necessary to stop the arrogance of the Nord. However, something quite unexpected happened at that moment. His back was turned to the city, and as I looked over his shoulder a large group of town guards were running into the town, whilst hold citizens were retreating into their homes. The Nord, oblivious to what was happening behind him continued on about how strong of a warrior he was, when suddenly, a dragon slammed into the ground behind us, and a blast of fire roared down the street, I quickly dismissed him and prepared myself for a fight!

Great story, Archi, it´s really nice to see how random the game can be.
I´ve entered Morthal after scouting the west, from Whiterun to Rorikstead. During my night journey I met 4 robbers who had attacked a caravan earlier. After killing them, I found their hideout which I cleared after a heavy fight. The reward was good, though, so the whole fighting was worth it.
After some more miles I finally reached Morthal, where I suddenly became involved in a sad story, involving a girls ghost, breaking into a strangers house and a heavy fight against undead of a special kind.
After I´ve went through all this the Jarl of Morthal finally made me Thane of Morthal and I received a nice greatsword, which sets enemies on fire when I hit them.

I then returned back to Whiterun and with all the abundand money I made during my journeys I decided to settle down there and bought a nice little house for myself. After decorating it, it´s now warm, homely and I finally have a place to store the personal treasures I´ve found.

My next steps will be doing some more quests for the Companions. After freeing a Riften citizen from robbers and returning him back home I´m more than excited to find out what great adventures I´ll make!

If you don't want to cheat don't forget your scrolls if you have any and your food too. The firestorm scroll killed him for me.

I eventually managed it.  It took a couple of tries but the scrolls are what did it.  A couple of fireballs did in most of his health, and then I stabbed him in the back while he was distracted by my friend.

Since then, I managed to kill my second dragon, had an encounter with a troll and got stuck with a sabre-toothed cat on the 7000 steps.

I love how huge this game is, just like oblivion was.

Walking by the shore of a small lake on my way to a quest. All of a sudden a scruffy-looking guy runs up to me, handing me over a couple of magical dwarven bracers saying "you! hold on to these, I will be right back to get them. Don't try to run away or you'll get into trouble".

I watch this guy swimming across the lake, just as he climbs the shore on the other side a hunter comes running, asking me "have you seen a man run past here?!", I say "Yes he want that way". The hunter starts to chase him while saying "he stole from me, i'm going to get him".

The thief cowers behind a tree, yelling "I yield I yield!" but the hunter puts a couple of arrows in him. Then that's the end of that, I lie to the hunter and keep the bracers which were perfect for me.

Hahaha, just the way I would've handled that. Anyone else been a burglar here? Not house is safe from Fuchs! Not even in Whiterun. Which ended with a Prison Break scene after they captured me.

Anyways, there I was, on my way to the 7000 steps to claim some funny words from bearded old men. I enter this village after a long walk and just walk around a bit, spotting this rather strange fellow near a ruin. A conversation ensues! Not really. He just moaned something about a girl who would come back. And then a quest started, talk to Wilhelm. So I did. He told me that was her sister, she was gone, etc. etc. He also told me she was last seen on the island east of the village. So I go there and find a cave. I was all like, she must be in the cave! Half an hour and 30 draugr's later I end up solving puzzles and fighting quite a tough boss. Then I exit the cave with my bag full of loot but without any sign of that damn girl.

Turned out she was on an entirely different spot which I will not spoil. Just don't bother looking on the island, take a swim instead.

But the insane liberty is so magnificent, I drift away from the storyline every goddamn time because I want to help all those people! And rob them off their stuff of course. I think I will screw the storyline for now, I have to get a horn from some windy caller or something like that. I will go to the HQ of the Legion and sign up! Damn long travel though.

After doing a rather important quest up in the north-west I ended up in Solitude. As I walked the streets at night I met another crazy old man and somehow ended up doing the most bizare quest, so far. I won´t spoiler much, but let´s say, the quest contained a mad king and a funny staff.

I also ended up in Markarth, after a heavy night of drinking and I´m really impressed by that city! I´ve got to get back there, soon and just walk through it´s streets, enjoying the beautiful sight!

Btw, I´m currently a furry Companion. What happens if I join the Legion? Will I leave the Companions or stay in both organisations? I´m currently in Solitude and I´m tempted to enlist. ^^

Oh, and I´ve also found my fourth Dragon Shout. Now I can freeze my enemies to death, after I blew them away with my voice, ran faster than light and grilled them with my firey dragon breath! :D

With 47 Hours of my time, I am just stray of having spent two fully days in this game. With my hunt for side quests dwindling down, I have resorted instead to traveling to each and every one of the locations on the game map one at a time, and finding things to do at each one. There is a plethora of quests out in the wilderness which are unrelated to any cities, and some give you some pretty cool items!

My latest acquirement is a staff which blasts an explosion of fire in all directions for fifteen feet, dealing sixty points of damage! Being the Rogue Mage that I am, this was an AMAZING discovery for me. Currently, I'm exploring a cave, in search of even more treasures. However, my inventory is almost full, and soon it will be time for a pilgrimage to Skyrim's various shop keepers to purge, and then home to the College of Winterhold to store anything I wish to keep.

skyrim deserves to be the GOTY no doubt.

bethesda has done it yet again, quality before quantity . I must shamefully admit that I've played this game for 70 hours since the release. (although I admit that I let the game run idle for a few hours)
It's the only game I've played since the release.
I think this is the best game released in the past 5 years. The world of skyrim is so god dam imence .. You always find something new to do :P

Break into everybody's house at night, eat all their food and leave presents.  Repeat in every dwelling in Skyrim.

Has anyone tried the pickpocketing perk, which allows to leave little "poison presents" into someones pockets? Does it do as much dmg as poison would do on tip of arrow and does person being poisoned get alerted?

If it's anything like TES:O then they should die after a few seconds. (but I only did it with poisoned apples)
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim?

I'd like to try it, but I don't want to mess my character with useless perks. If it kills anything with any poison almost instantly, it would make backstabbing useless. On the other hand, if it makes damage as much as it tells in poison bottles label, I would much rather smash that poison in my victim with dagger or arrow.

Thanks for the inspiration, I am going to leave junk while I break in. Also, someone busted me while I was breaking in and I paid for it. When I woke up the next day I was assaulted by 3 thugs, killed them and found a contract on one. You guessed it, signed by the guy who's house I plundered.

Hehe, me too. The Vigilant of Stendarr hired some thugs to rough me up. They died though, I will find their masters soon enough and explain the error of their ways.

Also, someone put out a contract on me with the Dark Brotherhood. They may be connected, the DB note only mentions a green lit from their leader. I'm not that bad of character, and when I steal, no-one sees it, yet, I apparently pissed off some people ;D

Not my video, but I am GLAD I got the Wabbajack, best thing in the entire game thus far.

For the people investigating the gauldur legend thing, it's not worth it. Hella hard boss fight at the end and the item you get, Gauldur's Amulet(?) only gives +30 magicka, health, and stamina.

25k actually. Furniture costs between 500 and 2500 per room. Otherwise it's a nice house, but I'd love to have more display cases. What's the point of having fancy stuff if it's hidden in chest. You cant return to something when you are in it already.

But yes, a game that would have the whole Tamriel (and of same quality as Skyrim) would be something I would shove my money into. As this is my first Elder Scroll game, I'd love to see how the other provinces look like. :)

Btw, I´d really, really love to see a game like TES5:S take place in "ASoIaF"s Westeros. Being able to see cool things, such as the Eyrie, the Wall, Dorne, Kings Landing, the Twins etc. would be ultra-awesome. :D

Twice now Ive ambushed Imperials, given the prisoner my extra set of armor and weapons, and he doesnt use any of it, just runs off and kills himself in minutes/seconds..."I have a full set of armor and a war ax...imma keep my rags on and punch this armed skeleton..."

One funny thing that happened, I was wandering across the central plain and came across a small stand of trees, and a hanging behive. I looked inside and got a bee ingredient and some honeycomb, then out of curiosity, I took a swing at the hive and it fell and started rolling. "Cool!" I thought, trying to use it as a football. I hear this high pitched noise behind me and turn, expecting to see a swarm of bees, but theres nothing there, and I hear the noise again, and take some damage. I start looking around wildly, and suddenly spot three gold and black dudes running at me, one using a long range lightning attack. My first reaction was "OH S#!T BEE PEOPLE!" I later found out they were Thalmos guards with an order to kill me...nothing to do with the hive...

There are doors near the boss room that you can use after clearing the dungeon. Those open to earlier part of the dungeon or work as back doors.

Man, the leader of the Greybeards sure surprised me. When I saw him I instantly hit R  ;D I've also cleared a Dwarven ruin. If you come across one, go in it, fight like you have never fought before. Why? The loot is awe-some.

Also had a really hard fight which ended up great. First I find this arch where you got your dragon shouts, on top of it is a dragon. I kill it after a long battle and approach the wall thingy. All of a sudden a sarcophagus pops open and this insanely strong ghost jumps out. He was tough, really tough. He was Krosis! And now his mask is mine!

Alright, here is me as claimant to the throne as High King of Skyrim. Didn't work out so I gave it to Tullius.

And here is me in my current load out, enchanten Elven armour with some Dwarven stuff and Krosis' mask. Those glass arrows where a pain in the ass to hoard. Though I prefer using Dwarven Sword of Flames together with Fire Bolt.

Wouldn't install any comprehensive texture packs for now. Creating high res textures without destroying the art/look/feel of the original game takes time. It's not as simple as copy pasting some high res photos into the texture folder. There are seperate packs for Whiterun and other miscellaneous stuff (barrels, characters etc) which are already very good though.

I recommend Chris2012s texture pack for Whiterun (http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=114).

And why do I have to run back a whole frigging dungeon that I just cleared ? Is that going to be with every dungeon? I've just started playing this game.
There are doors near the boss room that you can use after clearing the dungeon. Those open to earlier part of the dungeon or work as back doors.

<Groans> Really ? I was looking for it, couldn't find and in the end decided to follow the little quest marker. It was the dungeon with the golden claw. Anyway now I am walking up 17.000 steps .. it's not an RPG it's Sado Masochism.

This game is just...awesome!

I didn´t have anything to do today, so I spent my free time in Skyrim. I´ve started to explore the north, now, eventually discovering Dawnstar (mostly because of the Museum quest).
Dawnstar is a pretty boring, town, compared to Solitude or even Whiterun, but I´ve got some nice quests, which I tried to finish today.
One led me to Markarth, which is a really awesome city. It kinda reminds me of Minas Tirith and looks highly interesting. When i´ve finished my quests in Dawnstar I´ll definately take a closer look at that great city.
Other than that I made some progress in the main quest line and started supporting the Blades against the Thalmors. I also made it to Riften, which I really despise. I´m no fan of the thieves guild so i try to spend not too much time in that city.

My highlight today:
After retrieving a book from a cave I was attacked by a Fire Dragon. It was the first time I met one and he was a tough foe. I used my enchanted Elven Bow with Dwarven and Glass arrows to fight him from afar and when he got too close I used the good old Fus-Ra-Dah, to keep him at bay.
I always tried to keep away from it, jumping up rocks and taking cover behind them. Eventually I came close to a Mammoth and a Sabre Cat and the Dragon decided to attack them instead of me.
I positioned myself on a rock, shooting arrows at the Dragon while he fought against the mammoth and the sabre cat. The latter died, while the Mammoth finally killed the dragon in an epic tusk-to-teeth-fight!
Unfortunately the mammoth was startled by the dragon (or by a stray arrow I´ve accidently fired at it :D) so it attacked me, but fortunately it was weakened enough from the earlier fight, so I had an easy time killing it.

I also hate Forsworns. Damned wildings, I´ll kill them when I see them, so they won´t pester others anymore! Those who are allies with Hargravens and Ice Spiders deserve death!

Haha yeah I hate the forsworn, if you do the Red Eagle quest you will find 2 hagravens doing some kind of ritual. They are really hard with their spells, you'll see  ;)

I hate Riften too, it's deeply corrupted and everyone's annoying there, except the Argonian selling jewels.

And don't forget Mjoll the Lioness! She's nice too! I retrieved her sword, married her and took it back from her. Pretty good sword.

And then I gave her full steel armour, dwarven axe of weariness, archery circlet, elven bow and some arrows. She wore the full steel armour/circlet/axe on the day I gave it to her, today I checked out my house and she was back wearing the old iron stuff?.. She does wear the axe though. Any solution/fix?

Edit: Since my gaming computer is at my dads, and we've got a 360 with a copy of skyrim here, I decided to start a stealthy Khajiit character by the name of Katze (original, I know).  Only gonna focus on the stealth/archery trees. Thus far, the see in the dark ability is really handy, especially since it's unlimited

Yesterday I got royally owned. A wild dragon appeared and it landed on an edge of a cliff. I dashed towards it and just before I was able to land my first hit, the dragon grabbed me in its jaws. It was super effective and he threw me off the cliff. If only I would have had fraps on... add a Goofy holler into that and it would have been even more hilarious.

"A Night to Remember" is probably the best quest in Skyim! If you do it, make sure to visit your going-to-be-"bride"! :D

I´m playing a Nord at the moment with the main focus on hand-to-hand combat. I use magic (mostly destruction) and archery (with an enchanted elven bow) as support, if the situation gets too tough or if I just want to take out lonely targets, without getting too much attention (an electrical elven bow that shoots dwarven arrows works quite well).

At first I used only two-handed swords, but at the moment I really fancy a shield/sword combo.
My main sword is "Dawnbreaker", a wicked, glow-in-the-dark Daedric sword, that deals fire damage upon hits.

And as shield I´m using the "Shield of Solitude".
It´s a pretty nice combo and together with a Fus-Ro-Dah I can take out pretty much anything that stands in my way. And if not, I´ve got a nice selection of potions and poisons that act as support. :D

Here´s my Nord knight, Tyrion:

If I recall correctly, the Elder Scrolls vampires were closer to Blade whereas Twilight vampires seem to be closer to Abraham Stoker's Dracula. So setting oneself to fire is not needed, the game will do it for yourself.

Humanoids you can cut down with axe and sword, and you are the dragonborn after all.

But bears, poke one with a sword and it merely gets annoyed. They are tough buggers. In the olden times bear hunters used spears, but since there are no spears in the Elder Scrolls universe (a great injustice) the bear offer a formidable enemy indeed. There is no bear blood running through your veins son!

Ok and i want to give yall a warning. There is this cave near labyrinth (whatever) called  Shalidor's Maze. Dont go in here with a companion unless you want to lose him/her. Ive lost lydia. She refuces to go out of the maze. I dismissed her but i cant find her in dragonsreach so i prob lost her with all my dragon bones and scales. Copy of the bug reported in skyrim wiki:

I completed Shalidor's Maze and got the Shout, etc, but every time I try to leave, Lydia stays behind. I can't fast-travel from the location. I tried asking her to return to Whiterun, then went there myself: she wasn't there. Went back to Shalidor's Maze: she's still there. Exited and reentered multiple times, asked her to stay/go home then follow again multiple times, all no good: she won't leave.
69.8.25.168 20:43, November 14, 2011 (UTC)

Possible solution found: Leaving Lydia in Shalidor's Maze, I went to my house in Whiterun. As I was going to sleep the night she ran up to me, and has followed me out the door.

Regards,

UDIENOWPLZ, Steam user.

~ZacharyTylerDewey~ i had that problem with the guy following me, i told him to wait and then after i think 2 days he wasn't where he was stuck and i went back to the shrine of mara and he was there. maybe that will work for you, not the same place or character so i dunno.

{C}{C}{C {C {C {C}zG: I had this problem also. Tell her you want to split up, and she should go back to Whiterun. She'll either go to your house, or to Dragonsreach if you haven't bought the house there yet. Once you go back, just talk to her to get her following you again.

November 19, 2011

Alternative problem with same effect:

I finished Shalidor´s Maze and try to exit... but when I do Lydia isnt just stuck... she is gone. I go back in, nope not there either. she just disappear.

Companions are overrated. I´ve only used that Riverwood Elf to store my dragon bones and scales, until I could afford a house in Whiterun. Other than that, I´m being a lonewolf. I hate making sure they don´t get stuck somewhere stupid and most of the time being alone is much more effective, because you´re more independent.
Lydia died pretty early, I think she was stomped by a giant or a mammoth. :D

Playing this game has brought back a lot of respect for some of the old Scandinavian ways of culture. So much so that I've actually rekindled my work on my tattoo design for my upper back, which will include a round shield, adorned with runes written in Old Norse. The runes, if written properly, should give me some good fortune, or whatever charms I craft into them.

Well yea, but ive put it on novice just to beat that undead king. That was just rediculous. Maybe you can beat him when you "abuse" all smith and enchant + skill trainers.
Id like to hear if this is intended or a little mistake. No biggie since you can lower the difficulty level.

Krosis was a major pain to beat for me - I died several times.

I only beat him by getting him stuck on terrain and pelting him with about 30 arrows (his fireballs were conveniently hitting a tree between us).  The strange thing was that at the start he would be mostly impervious to damage but entirely passive.  To change this I had to hit him with a shout.

Did another main quest today (plus some side quests) and fought my way through Alftland, a dwarven fortress, into Blackreach, a colossal underground cavern that holds an ancient Dwarven city.
It´s a beauty and I really start to like Dwarven architecture! Too bad the Dwemer are all gone and these old places are now swarmed by those disgusting Falmer and their hideous allies.
I would love to behold Blackreach in its full glory, but alas, that time is gone... :/

Doubt you would have been able to see it at its full glory mainly because the Dwemer were quite xenophobic and lived in secrecy ;) . You would have to kill them first. Or visit quite soon after their disappearance

Bouras, I would teach those Dwemers to be friendly to strangers! :D

Anyway, it seems like Skyrim mod tools will be released soon and one of the most promising total conversions coming for it is the Middle Earth Roleplaying Mod (http://www.moddb.com/mods/merp-middle-earth-roleplaying-mod).
It started as a mod for Oblivion and its aim is to completely include Tolkiens Middle Earth into the game. The team has already relased a beta for Oblivion and is now trying to include their content into Skyrim, making use of its more advanced technology.

Check out this trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tzCuSssDps&feature=player_embedded). They´ve included alot so far and many known places from both the books and the movies and if they´re going to make it this will definately be one of the best mods ever released.

When possible, join the Dark Brotherhood, so much fun! (first quest, when approached by them, was fucking great).

So, I'm at a dilemma.  I just beat the main quest last night, completely (won't reveal spoilers), and now I'm not sure where to proceed.  I can continue with my character (Imperial Bow/Two Handed weapon guy), or start a new character (prob Argonian or Khajiit), and make him correctly, and level up skills the way I want them to be, not the way I sorta stumbled around aimlessly with.  Sucks that I can't save my current char and start the new one as a different save....

Thoughts?

I personally believe in saving the main campaign for the very last. Its much more rewarding to explore every location in the game, and do every side quest, BEFORE the main campaign. Not only do they prepare you for it, giving you gear, skills and other such things, but the main campaigns are always such a small percentage of this game, and the game is wasted if one simply blasts through it. I made that mistake in Fallout 3, and soon found myself in your exact situation.

Make a new account Mudra, and start to thoroughly think about what you want to reach with it. Avoid fast travel, avoid überweapons and all that and do a realistic 'RP-ish' approach on the next character.

I finished the main quest on my first save character and then decided to make a new one with a clear goal.

Vylar the Dark Elf, refugee from Morrowind. Why did he run away? Because he is wanted for murder! Aye, he is a psychopath. Murders people for no reason but also willing to help most people out. For cash.
- focus on sneak approach
- train archery and sword/magic combo, Mehrune's Razor in future
- avoid main quest
- do small little quests
- eventually join Dark Brotherhood

And the game is now even more fun!

Btw can you created a bow with dragon armor skill thingy with blacksmithing? Because I am collecting does dragon hide/bones like crazy but need 14 more skill points to 100 (need more leather!). Also is there a way to create arrows?

Really annyoing mistake i made. My character is a brute, 2 handed weapons and heavy armor.
I went up the light-armor side of the smithing tree (first of all, i didn't know what was light and what was heavy armor, didn't even think of it at the time) because the light-armor side is the shorter way to get dragon-armor.
But when I get dragon armor, it sucks, and I realize that Deadric and Ebony armor is so much better. I feel robbed. I can't continue down the tree from dragon armor, but must start over on the heavy armor-tree.

I'm a Light character, I use bow for long range and a war axe at melee, but I went to the heavy line of smithing because heavy weapons do more damage than their light counterparts. So I'm with a epic ebony bow with scaled armor and light elven magical shield. Dunno why, but I cant find a better shield. I have found dragonscale boots, elvenglided armor, scaled gloves and helmet but still a light elven shield :P
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim? [SPOILER ALERT]

I just unlucked everything for blacksmithing :) Used elven armor (I am a Woodelf myself :)) until I got 100 BS and got dragonscale yesterday. Also use the Dreadic bow from the heavy side.

but question:

I thought the Dreadic bow was the best bow in game. Atm its legendary and does 102dmg. But on the interweb I saw someone saying his Ebony bow did like 140dmg without arrows or enchantment. How is that possible? I just made my Dreadic bow with BS and upgraded it to legendary once. I only have the Krosis mask and no enchantments for archery since I havent found 1 yet I could disenchant.

Well its at 96 atm. Only need the 100 perk for paralyzing. Do not think the last 4 points make that big of a differences. But I noticed I had a blacksmithing potion which improves weapon/armor improvements by 40%. Does it do 40% extra even if you are at 100 blacksmithing?

remember that there are also jewels, armor and potions that allow you to improve an item even better...So say you got a ring, a neclace, a headshitprincessthingy and drink a potion, hell even some armor that allows you better smithing, then maybe you can improve something up to i don't know how much...

not sure what to think about the game
Installed it played it around 2-3 hours.
I finished the mission where you need to find this gold stuff in a hugh cave, and i killed the one dragon, and now im on my way to another place somewhere in the south.
Still it does not really catch me, like fallout 3/NV did. Where you get pretty much soken into the story right at the start.
Here I just know, well, almost nothing yet

Former Morrowind + Oblivion player...  :)

Had the game around 10 days now. Yesterday it was a 6pm-2am session, and that was just trying to finish misc. quests I'd picked up!
I'm getting to the stage now where I daren't talk to random characters for fear of getting sidetracked even further!  ;D
Back to the main quest for now, just arrived in Solitude to set up a meeting with some guild or something.

Moment of the game so far was a companion quest where I trapped myself behind some bars and was left watching my fellow companion being attacked by around 10 heavily armed bandits and thinking "lol you're f##ked mate.." before he turns into a faffing Werewolf and pwns 'em all!  8)

I get the feeling it could take a few years to do everything in this game, good value for money, pity about the random ctd's and odd faceless character.

Welcome to Skyrim. That's just it, play a bit over three hours and you're lost. It's truly a huge game, possibly the largest RPG ever. I played Morrowind a bit, but a lot of Oblivion, level 35 in Skyrim now and I still haven't touched much of the main storyline or the civil war.

Now, I am growing to be a powerful wizard who is also a vampire. I also did some jobs for a Daedra Lord or two. There will be NO Christmas for Markath! I'm good with all counties, but Markath just went plain wrong. I had to flee with my tail between my legs, but now I will go back. Beware Markath, a storm is coming, and it's carrying a Daedric Mace too. Fornsworn and their collaborators, run!

Great game.   Lvl 60 Redguard now. Dual wielding sword and axe, light armor, and restoration. No one can withstand my attacks, but i cant block aswell as powerful spellcasters might kill me from distance. I think ive done all the main quests except Thieves guild. Chosing non combat skills like Smithing and Enchanting is alot better than i expected. My internet have been really bad lately, i rarely got to play much FH2 anyhow, unfortunately. I really had problems with Skyrim at first, until some automatic patches fixed it.

Lol    yepp i actually had a curved sword sometime early in the game. Redguard was totally the best choice in Oblivion, its kinda gimped down in Skyrim. In Ob they had + 50 in alot of skills, now they have only better stamina regeneration for a short time, and 50% vs poison. 50% protection against something aint that good imo.

Talking about Shouts, when you get Slow Time theres pretty much nothing that can kill you anymore. Ive gotten Call Lightning aswell, but havent tried it out at enemies yet.
The maxed out   Unlelenting Force   is also pretty cool  ;D

Do you guys play multiple characters or just one? I want to make a new one with different perks and looks but I have read very mixed reviews about the save system in the game. Basically you just need to save manually and keep check which save you are playing or else it would fuck something up. Sometimes people have lost their original character even thought they were careful with the save system.

Any experiences with this on anyone? :)

I started again with a second character and copy-pasta my first character's save file onto my desktop as insurance against accidental deletion (not that I would be quite so mad since I don't intend to use it again).

The problem would lie in the auto save. When you only have one current save/the same as the auto sve your f'd.
I have 2 characters I stopped playing the 2e one same day) copied my previous save game just to be safe (so not the same as auto save/i.e. when you enter a cave) and all is fine.

I was hoping to resist skyrim until i have new pc, but can't. I'm going to try it with my 3.00 Ghz Pentium 4, GeForce 7600GS and 1 GB RAM. Performance mod will hopefully help to run it at least on low. What do you think about it?

Too bad. You wont be able to see enemies past 10 meters or so, the textures will be horrible, plus 1 gb of ram...the game will run way too slow. And the processor wont save you. I recommend waiting until you get another pc.
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim? [SPOILER ALERT]
Post by: Flippy Warbear on 26-12-2011, 21:12:16
Yeh you need to play with the save states and nevermind the actual autosaves. Autosaves only follow the character you are currently playing, so after each session its adviced to make a proper save rather than just leave it for the autosave.

Flippy, open console and type save fancynamehere

It makes a new save with a custom name, never had problems with overwriting or whatever. I have 3 characters currently but always play on only one. My Dunmer is almost the way I want him to be so next up is either a trailer copy of Dovahkiin or a badass Nord/Orc with heavy armour/two hander. After that I want to make a mage or something..

The only complaint that I have really had of Skyrim so far is the odd behaviour of some dragons and how goddamn huge some dungeons turn out to be.

I am a level 42 Imperial with one handed and magic (conjuration and illusion) focus. I haven't finished any main quests yet but I have been messing about, having fun and triggering side quests. My character is at a point where all the skill perks are getting quite fun and have radically improved the game and some of the shouts to be learned are epic.

Imo, Skyrim is fast becoming the best RPG that I have ever played (and I started way back with Zork, leisure suit larry, and king's quest)

Im going to assume you carry a shield and have the "quick reflexes" perk for block? One handed ftw!

Post by: sheikyerbouti on 27-12-2011, 11:12:57
I found a pretty good elven shield that I carry around but I mostly keep one hand free for constant magic attacks. I love conjuring an atronach, casting sanguine rose for a random dremora and then relying on my power and Lydia's backup to ruin the field of battle.

I am thinking of getting a new companion because I have accumulated like 5 or 6 now to choose from. My concern is the potential loss of carrying power as Lydia is a mule (she can carry over 220 for me while wearing full dwarven armour). I do also exploit her character a touch by not giving her a shield as she carries one by default.

So far, my best record was having 2 conjurations and 2 npc's fighting on my behalf in some dungeon near markarth but I could have had more except for the fact that too many NPC's clutter the lines of fire and they can get glitched in dumb places.

My number one tip is to improve your merchant skills with all the potions, altars, enchantments and perks. Money is far rarer in Skyrim than it was in Oblivion and it really changes the game on you, the best stuff comes in treasure boxes (u need the map first) but you can always buy what you want, when you want it.
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim? [SPOILER ALERT]
Post by: Flippy Warbear on 27-12-2011, 11:12:53
I have around 74k gold with my main character and I have pretty much put my money into everything possible ranging from blacksmithing supplies to grand soul gems, training in any and every possible trainer and of course buying and decorating every single house in the game. I even crafted expensive weapons, gears and enchanted, upgraded them to max and gave them whenever I found another housecarl or companion who I could give them to.

I now have a problem in which I still have so much gold its just stupid. I dont care about looting urns or bodies anymore, I check but rarely take anything because I simply dont have enough money sinks in the game anymore. I've even bought a lot of totally useless stuff like mage robes which I know I will never wear just so I could put the money into something.

Might I add that I'd have around 125k gold in total if I didnt do all that I listed above. Its just ludicrious how gold becomes totally meaningless once you have a fuckton of it and you have bought everything you need and can.

EDIT: OH and I just remembered! I even gave out 10k gold for that argonian who finds you wherever you are in the world in order to pay back your dept for the bet you made in A Night To Remember quest. You could fight him or pay him 750 gold too but I chose to give him the 10k, because it doesnt affect me one little bit. :-/

Yes skilling alchemy alone makes you a rich man. But I don't find that to be too bad.
The thing that bothers me more is that the melee weapons are so much better than destruction magic. I started as a mage, but then I read about the improved weapons and desided to transform my caracter into a two-handed melee babarian. And although i only have a skill of about 20 in two-handed weapons and heavy armor it is much more easy to kill monsters now then it was with skill 85 in destruction magic.

But all in all it is a very good game.

got problem with money?

lvl 47
Got 100k and have bought all available houses + all furniture (in total, probably around 100k in itself).
Never ever use any money, never need it.

Kinda gotten bored of the game now. Discovered most locations, taken on the main quest now finally.

Kinda want to create a new character but I've done everything with this one. There would be nothing new as I've done thieves guild, companions, dark brotherhood etc.

Also about followers/companions, after a while I stopped using them all together. Best choice in my skyrim-career. They just get stuck or I get nervous that they will get killed while being used as a mule.

This week... has been almost the death of me. Ever since I read that yes, you actually have to level every bloody skill even if you never use them to 100. So guess who has been leveling them like crazy? Jesus H. Christ that has to be the stupidest thing in the whole game. I can see many people just losing the interest at it and never reach max level because you have to improve everything to maximum.

So the past week I have been leveling enchanting, alchemy, illusion, conjuration, pickpocket and alteration to 100. Now I only have left things like speech, destruction, restoration and archery which will level up on their own as I continue playing. Heavy armor and two-handed weapons are what I got to level up next pretty much, but those shouldnt be as big of a pain in the nuts as the rest of these fucking things. Altho I must admit that I never really looked into the perk trees of the "useless" skills until I started leveling them and I noticed that theres actually some interesting things here and there. Ended up perking up enchanting so I could add two enchants into my gear, thats neat.

Now... I shall watch Jesse Cox play... Skyrim...

Maybe I should finish the Skyrim "story".

Too bad that I just started a new play-through of Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition. That'll keep me entertained for 100+ hours. And I just generally prefer RPG's with good story and deep characters over a sandbox dungeon crawler.

I do enjoy The Elder Scrolls games, but at the end of the day Skyrim is just huge pretty world with very little depth. It's an ocean with only two meters of water, like a wise man once said. The Minecraft combat does not help either. Am I the only one who thinks that Oblivion had more... responsive and enjoyable combat?

I honestly do agree with you. Skyrim is a great game, had real fun with it the first month but haven't touched it since. Very low replay-value for me.
Mass effect 3 on the other hand, finished it just now and already want to start over to see all different scenarios unfolding.

The feeling I have with Skyrim is that in 1 playthrough I can already do everything in the game. Where MS3 you need to have multiple characters to see/play everything.

Hey! Noob question!

I found 2 rings:

1) + 40 points on life
2) + 15 points on light armour

Which one is better/ more usefull in the long run? I can´t decide. They both fit into my playstyle.
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim? [SPOILER ALERT]
Post by: hslan.Grim on 28-03-2012, 13:03:24
I think the + light armor only works better in longer fights. But since its light armor you shouldn't be in long fight anyways. I always used rings/enchantments that made me do more dmg once I got them (I was using bows and later in the game one-handed + light armor like a assassin).

I always had several gear with me too, 1 for ''bowing'', 1 for dual-wielding, another for sneaking, etc. But my choice would be the + 40 health one :)
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim? [SPOILER ALERT]

+40 health, definitely. Always comes in useful and the +15 LA is only a very small bonus in my opinion.

Snow Elves where forced underground by Nords after a bloody war. They sought refugee with the Dwemer who 'welcomed' them but then weakened them by feeding them poisonous stuff. They basically became Dwemer slaves after that and evolved into what we call the Falmer. And when the Dwemer disappeared they had everything for themselves!

Maybe they are going back to the surface to claim what is theirs. I hate Falmer though, nasty bastards.

I hate Falmer though, nasty bastards.

RACIST!

I have a friend who is a Falmer and he is the nicest Falmer I've ever met. He asks nothing of me but is willing to lend a hand any time I need. It only cost 30 gold to have him stuffed for use as a coathanger.

DWEMER FTW !
FUCK FALMER !

Try sleeping in Breezehome - she will sit on the chair at the foot of your bed...

...EVERY NIGHT

Also she says "hey look, a cave! I wonder what's inside?" when you EXIT the cave

Also she sets off traps, which is funny :)

Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim? [SPOILER ALERT]
Post by: hOMEr_jAy on 25-05-2012, 12:05:51
At the moment horses are just simle taxis, that bring you from A to B. That´s the reason I never really use one. But if they´ll add horse combat it´ll make them much more usefull, especially if they´re going to add lances or spears.
Title: Re: Ready to return to Skyrim? [SPOILER ALERT]
Post by: hslan.Grim on 25-05-2012, 17:05:11
Actually horses are used in combat. If you dismount near an enemy the horse will attack the enemy. Mostly it dies against harder enemies.
Its the reason why I never used them in later playthroughs. Always annoying to dismount to see your horse suddenly run away to attack a target in which case you need to go rescue it  >:(

Yep

-Races including the akavir from wich the blades weapons and armor is based off
-Homeplace of the dragons
-Uriel the fifth send an invasion force wich got driven back by magicka controlled weathre

Found it very facisnating, i hope they make a game of it someday

Started a new game yesterday, Bosmer archer. Focus is sneak and archery and if they get close mace/axe and shield. Or mace/axe and a good staff I loot. Haven't started the main quest, only told Balgruuf shit was getting hot in Riverwood. Then he gave me a reward and asked me to come with him. Took the reward and ran away.

Now just doing quests for people, clearing out bandit hideouts and stuff. Trying to find quests I never did, pretty hard. Will start the main quest when I'm high level  ;D

Bethesda also added something special

If kotaku says its great, it is great  ;D

its around 6 hours of gameplay for the fast player and around 8 hours for the average skyrim player. That is, for the main quest. With all the other stuff, Dragonborn easily gives +13 hours of new awesomeoness

The only dissapointment, is the dragon riding.

I'm having no problems at all, and am greatly enjoying it.  Did you start the dragonborn campaign yet?  IIRC you have to have trained with the Grey Beards, then go to a town and get accosted by cultists.  Then the main Solstheim quest starts.

try reinitiating it. Go to data files, tick the DLC off, start the game, pick a saved file, save, close game, restart menu and tick it back on again. See if it fixes it. (you'll have to start over again though and loose all unique dragonborn items)

So i continued my game.

I'm like level 36 and haven't finished main questline, i have all DLCs tho. Heavily modded game, with stuff like Frostfall, Feast & Famine, Climates of Tamriel, UFO and a bunch more.

I defeated Alduin in the Throat of the World, funny thing was, Alduin was glitched. He was impossible to kill, even less with my weapons. I don't like magic, wizards can suck it up, my main weapon is the mighty Skyforge Steel Sword and a simple Iron Shield. The big dragon wasn't taking any damage at all. With frostfall, i had to make a fire and set up a tent or i will die of freezing, heh. Neither Lydia, Njada Stonearm (Was going to be my wife but how one can resist to Ysolda, the bike of Skyrim?), Kratos (me) and Parthunrax (whatever) could deal some damage to that guy, hah.

After defeating Alduin (reloaded multiple times till he was kill-able) i have to speak to that gay Jarl. But my friend told me that I should do Civil War first because speaking to the jarl and then the greybeards and then the "truce" will alterate Civil War questline, skipping many battles, is that true?.

I think I'm going to pick Stormcloacks, screw these Thalmor bitches!

You can do the truce but you can still do the civil war afterwards.

Basically, now, all the saves are in one unorganized order

Is there a mod, wich likes, groups the same save files of one character?

You can just rename the saves to make it easier to know what is what.

I'm quite tired of this "Moonlight Tales" mod, and after a brutal combat Ysolda caught the virus and she is now a werebear or something, not a werewolf like his ugly bald master though.

So yeah, the mod has an option to cure an NPC by travelling to the Glenmoril Cove and telling him/her to eat a werebeast heart, then the beast comes out in a ghostly form and you must kill it. For some weird reason, as soon as we left Whiterun, Ysolda was invincible, but not essential, all arrows, spells, swords etc went trough her doing no damage. Now she is defeating the beast single handeldy :|

Command "kill" doesn't work, she is a level 4 nub killing absolutely anything while taking no damage, nobody can stop angry Ysolda, nobody fucks with Ysolda (zing), oh my god, WHAT I HAVE CREATED, Ysolda I want divorce.

Wait there's more, for some unkown reason, she, along with Aela, Njada, Kharjo (GOOD CAT) will empty my magicka when I stand next to them, WHAT THE FUCK, I'm not a mage, I'm pure steel and heavy armor bro, so I don't mind getting my magicka depleted whitin seconds but... damn.

Are there mods that add owlbears to the game? Owlbears are cool.

I suggest you start to play WoW, plenty of owlbears in it: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100513125545/wowwiki/images/6/6d/Nestlewood_Owlkin.jpg

Moonkin are nice, but I'm more of a dwarf hunter kind of guy. Or goblins. And a goblin druid would be just silly! (And impossible as far as I know.)

Looks good, but will Bethesda or who ever owns the rights allow it?

Bethesda is very open to modding, that's why they make them so easily moddable (and, let's be frank, mods are half the fun in their games) So I don't why they wouldn't allow it to happen.

I'm surprised to not find anything here about Falskaar mod. New story in new land, personally enjoyed it.

I'm just waiting for Enderal. If it's as good as Nehrim was, well, it's going to be amazing  :)

I still honestly think, that Nehrim was better as a game than Oblivion. (Kinda like FH2 is better than BF2  ;))

I'm not even surprised to see that the most popular mods out there are pron and nudity mods.

Oh you, Skyrim.

Thank you for this. Nehrim was great and did not even know there was something like this coming from the same devs, awesome something to wait in the elder scrolls front again!
