Title: Panzergrenadiers...
Post by: Cpl. Mallard on 05-04-2009, 06:04:52
Ok, i always see players with tags that say Pzr. or Pzg. or pzgdr. Im guessing that's Panzergrenadier. What the hell makes Panzergrenadiers so special that everyone wants to have a Panzergrenadier clan??!! I know Fallschirmjager was paratroopers Gebirgjagers were mountain troops and the Waffen SS were "Elites."  What the hell is a Panzergrenadier?!

I believe, if my memory strikes me correct...panzergrenadiers are mounted troops that fight alongside Panzer tanks.

Panzergrenadiers are the infantry from panzer divisions. Their tasks are to keep enemy infantry away from the panzers, supporting the panzers by taking enemy tanks out, clearing out infantry resistance and capturing small villages where it's too dangerous for panzers to go inside. With fast charges they usually mount on the tanks to use it as a taxi but ofcourse they also got Blitz's, 251's and all the other tin cans.
Theres way more to tell about but just a simple basic.

Though I have no idea why everyone wants to be panzergrenadier. They where the second line units of the panzer divisions. To help the panzers.

Because they were just manly!  :P
Did I mention my grandfather was a Panzergrenadier? See, Darwin and Mendel must have gotten those survival of the fittest and genetics right.

I think an other reason for all the panzergrenadier clans is that they have a valid, realistic excuse why their clan plays both infantery and tank combat.  So they get the ebst of both worlds sort of. :p

"Weder Mensch, noch Tier, es ist ein Panzergrenadier"
Apart from the fact that the word sounds cool, they were the fellas who were mechanized unlike the bigger part of the Wehrmacht. So, instead of walking they had armoured half-tracks etc. and were directly fighting with the tanks. Their job was also to occupy the enemy positions, once the Panzers blitzed through them.

Were there not times the Panzergrenadiers would fight as infantry units only ?

Yes, when they lost their transport.

But then they were still cool because they´re so manly.

(I guess one of the main reason people pick that word as clan-name is because it sounds so cool. It combines "Panzer" and "Grenadier", words that must sound awesome for a non-German speaker :D)

Even for a german it sounds great, and i think Panzergrenadiere had to be awesome in fight.

Sry for my bad english.

Well in fact, that's the reason.
In 1942, this panzer infantry (Schützen Regiments) was renamed Panzergrenadiere to give a moral boost to the soldiers using historical reference.
Title: Re: Panzergrenadiers...

The Infanterie was named Grenadier (and later Volksgrenadier) for the same reason.

Same reason everyone makes an Allied airborne clan. Specialism...or...something.

Panzergrenadiers are pretty much mechanized infantry.
much like today's US 1st Calvary, and 4th Infantry. I think Germany still have Panzergrenadier units today.

they are more mobile than regular infantry. In WWII, they use the half-tracks. now they use the IFVs and APCs

Post by: VonMudra on 06-04-2009, 03:04:43
Yes, they still do.

And clans pick it because of elite status.  Panzergrenaidier units were, combat wise, the equal of the US marines.  They were the ones who got picked to be sent to the hot spots in combat, and could be counted on to win, or hold out.
Title: Re: Panzergrenadiers...
Post by: Ts4EVER on 06-04-2009, 03:04:15
Although they often didn't have their transports and had to use captured trucks or even bicycles...
Title: Re: Panzergrenadiers...
Post by: VonMudra on 06-04-2009, 04:04:15
Bikes are seperate.  Bike units were issued bikes for recon duties, and were rather common, especially in normandy.  IN the 21st Panzer reenactment group here, we do technically have a full bike mounted squad (I got one in fact), but its rarely out fully.

I think some PGs of the Goetz von Berlichingen Division (known from BoB) were bicycle-mounted because of lack of transport.

Homer, all German words sound cool/angry to English speakers.

Examples:

Example: Hundejunge
I think:Heavily armed zeppelin.
Reality:Puppies

Example:Blumenbeet
I think: Some sort of train mounted nebelwerfer
Reality:Flower Bed
Title: Re: Panzergrenadiers...

Nobody says "Hundejunge", "Welpe" is the usual word.
Title: Re: Panzergrenadiers...
Post by: Mspfc Doc DuFresne on 06-04-2009, 04:04:56
But welpe did make me think of dogs, which is too similar too puppies, and I was to lazy to find another word besides puppies, so I used Hundejunge. (I wish I knew German, it is such a cool language.)
Title: Re: Panzergrenadiers...
Post by: [11PzG]matyast on 06-04-2009, 09:04:30
11PzG is panzergrenadier because the previous clanleader had picked that name, and we have used it for the past 6 years.

I guess the appeal is with the mechanised infantry, being the tip of the attacks and having a good combat report.

Post by: hOMEr_jAy on 06-04-2009, 13:04:10
Oh yeah, English speakers love German words :D
Like "poltergeist", "rucksack", "bratwurst", "kindergarten" etc.
It´s funny that the English language uses many words that sound either the same as their German counterparts or very similiar. But then, if you think about it, English is related to German because the Anglo-Saxons brought it to England when they conquered it. Later English and German developed in different ways and both were influenced by Romanic languages.
/historical excursus ^^

Well, a large proportion of words in the english language are foreign load words (which explains some of the plain retarded spelling problems they have).  Latin, ancient greek, and french being the major contributers.  The oldest words are 'one', 'I', 'we' 'three', 'four' (at least I think so), and they date back thousands of years.

And german as a language does sound cool.  Not so much in a romantic sense, but its great for shouting - the opposite of french.

Actually, when I hear "Hundejunge" I only and ONLY understand it as an insult. "Du Hundejunge!" as childrens version of something like "Du Hurensohn!", because of the similar beginning. That's the only use if have ever heard someone say it.

You englishspeaking guys seem to love it, however I feel strange when shouting/swearing in standard high german. I only feel like being home when doing in my dialect.

Wait, this should be in Off Topic.

*moves it*

Oh and AFAIK Dutch is actually closer related to English then German, that is there is more "Low Germanic" (Dutch, low German etc.) in ENglish then High German (which is the "official" German).

If you can name a language, english probably has a loan word from it.  BTW, I'v never heard of either of those words.  What do they mean?

Yet low german is german.  ;) In no way less then standard german. Just not used as lingua franca.

They use Dutch words too!! Gimme your rucksack!

...which could also be a german loan word.  :P

Nay. I've read an article about the influence of the Dutch language, rucksack is from the Dutch word rugzak. A sack on your back. Anyways, most influence from Dutch was on the naval words. Alot of modern words still used in the international navy are decendent from the words used by the Dutch navy.

Panzergrenadiere are the slaves of the tankers. They are the little ants between them keeping em covered against infantry. In a world war III scenario the average lifespan of tanks is very short. And even shorter for the Grenadiers. They are just dogfood, somewhere between a chain of a friendly tank, a chain of the enemy tank, deafening noise and cracking steel. Simple toys for the tanks to play with. You can expect a quick death here. You'd be better of joining the pioneers.

Yes, and I have read an article about the influence of the german language and rucksack is from the german word rucksack. Written exactly the same way.   ;)

Eh eh uhrr eh.. Now I could start an argument about what magazine is better but I'm going the Lobo way.

German propaganda.

It was in no magazine, it was an essay in a scientific book to be precise.
And I always thought "german propaganda" was a call for "yes this it true"!

The neutral way I guess. Mine was a popular Dutch science/history magazine.

He's right. If we don't attack in the next few years, we will be screwed, because then we will need boats to enter dutch terrain.

Nope, Wehrmacht had them as well. I think there were actually some Fallschirm-Panzergrenadiers....
Title: Re: Panzergrenadiers...

You're refering to the Herman Goring Panzer Division.  It wasn't Fallschirmjagers though, just an elite Luftwaffe Ground unit (unlike the other Lufty Ground divisions).  The closest things the FJ got in terms of tanks were Stug3Gs in 1944.

As for PzGrn, they were in Heer, SS, and Luftwaffe.  Any branch that had a panzer division, basically.
