Old forum members remember thread about museums on the GamingForums. Now we are start thread about walkarounds.
What you can post here:
- Walkaround of any weapon, vehicle, aircraft, ship, uniform, fortifications, stowage items (gas cans, jacks etc) etc.
For what:
- Help to FH team;
- Help to another teams who made historical mods;
- Help to peoples who have interests to history;
- Help to scale modellers;
- Another peoples.
Where you can made walkarounds:
- Any museum near you ;D ;
- Your personal collection.
Where you can upload your walkarounds:
- Images hosting sites, like http://photobucket.com (http://photobucket.com), http://www.webshots.com (http://www.webshots.com), http://imageshack.us (http://imageshack.us) http://smugmug.com (http://smugmug.com), http://www.flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com) and another. More simple uploading procedure, but with images lost risk in future;
- Special walkaround pages like http://www.primeportal.net (http://www.primeportal.net), http://maquettegarden.free.fr (http://maquettegarden.free.fr), http://svsm.org/gallery/walkarounds (http://svsm.org/gallery/walkarounds) etc. More hard procedure for uploading, but more chance for images saving;
- Files hosting pages like http://rapidshare.de (http://rapidshare.de), http://www.zshare.net (http://www.zshare.net) etc. More useful for full-sized pics in archive, but limited time for hosting.
How you can post walkaround in thread:
- Name of item, and additional information (there photos taken etc):
- Preview pic;
- Link to walkaround.
Also you can upload walkaround as a list of preview pics, but without lots of full-sized images, please ;D

More general and varied stuff inside/outside. I apologize that some of the pics did not turn out as well with some shaking in them. I learned some of the limitations of my camera and how it takes pictures inside. As it was my first attmept at such, I went back a second time with a tripod and most of these are in the first thread.

Wow... that is one nice machine! I got some crazy idea I was going to get one, but when I started searching around, I found out those were almost as expensive as a Ferrari! Around $250,000 USD. So that pretty much killed my plans...I'll stick with my Willy's. Where did he acquire it? Is it original, or one of those kits? If it is orginal, did he do the restoration himself? If so, Very nice job.
-
Yes it's original, I believe he did the restoration partly himself, partly with help, e.g. The engine was tuned at a VW garage.
He does the animatronics for films which is a BIG money maker. Coincidentally he did sell his Ferrari for it. TBH I don't blame him, I'm not a big fan of Ferraris and when was the last time you saw a Ferrari driving down the River Thames? ;)
(Yes he has)
:P
-
Wow, for once in my life I can say I'm jealous! :-[ Just kidding, but that's very nice, and I would take a schwimmer over a Ferrari anyday. Glad to see there are people out there with that much historical enthusiasim still. :) Is he loceated in the States or in Europe?

The Sabra looks as though it was carrying a baby turret on its head.(ignore the guy)
it is, the M60 houses a machinegun in a mini turret on top of the main turret. the idea was the same as the M3 Grant, cept it worked with the M60.

I went through a Museum here in New Zealand recently and noticed a strange looking vehicle
(http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/Herc_Images/kurogane2.jpg)
It is a Kurogane Motortricycle used by Japan during ww2 for infantry transport and cargo duties.
Next time I pass through I will remember to do a Walkthrough with some detail shots and update this post:)
They also had a schwimwagen, kettenkrad, Indian motorcycle US army and a Jeep.
-
Dear god, is that a old Fiat 500 i spot there? I love those things!
-
Why does that jeep have tractor tires and no markings? Not to mention the canvas seats.. too square.. that's a poor restoration, i'm disapointed.
-
I have a small question and i am not sure where to post it so i try here. Are these 2 the same tank? The cast of the hull was diferent, slightly, and acording the the information 1 was a pershing, and the other a patton...
can someone tell me how to recognize the diferences?
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/1262/p1020046x.jpg
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1139/p1020047m.jpg
I only have these 2 frontal shots at the moment tough, should have taken more pics.
-
pershing:
M47 Patton: http://www.battletanks.com/images/M47_Patton-1.jpg
M48 Patton: http://www.battletanks.com/images/M48_Patton_2-1.jpg
so neither of those is Patton tank, but sure they look a bit different.. maybe different models of pershing?
-
I meant the M46 patton, i know the later ones have a completely different turret.
link acording to where you got your pics

I'll be off to Thailand for 4 weeks in a couple of days from now, any suggestions on museums and such ? Mind you, I don't think I'll travel to the Kanchanaburi area, so all that Kwai stuff is rather unlikely. But there isn't much of a plan yet so I may just pass through anyway.

When I made my backpacker travel I stayed nearly 2 months in Thailand, so tell me where you are and I tell you where to go ;)
besides Kanchanaburi has the lollest war museum I ever entert#d, they claim to have the Steelhelm of Hitler and Mussulini for example.... and they say that a Mauser C96 is an allied weapon of WW2 .... I can upload fotos of the "highlights" if you want
-
That sounds humorous. Upload!
-
okay, as soon as I find webspace I will
-
Okay, lets take a look at the War Museum of Kanchanaburi
There are two more Museums in Kanchanaburi about the Railway, these a quite good, but the one I show you now is just for laughs
It is the museum next to the river kwai bridge, from the top of the Museum you can actually get a nice view of the bridge , and this is the real bridge, just the film with alec guiness shows a wooden bridge ….
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/4793/img0769j.jpg
Next, some of the LOLINGS inside of the Museum
The german “Hitler” steel helmet , on the side you could still see the markings of the Kuomintang
http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/9230/img0771w.jpg
And then also the helmet of Mussolini is not missing http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/7637/img0773u.jpg
Somehow I cant upload anymore pictures, so maybe later I can add a few more

Airfield vehicles and Ford WOT balloon truck.

I´ll probably visit the Fort Schoenenbourg in Alsace, France which was part of the famous Maginot Line. I´ll definately take pictures and if someone wants anything special I can post some of the pics here. The fort is quite big and has some special exhibitions, so be prepared for some (hopefully) good pictures.

I got a few for you, dating WW1 till just after WW2, did not take pictures of later models, also took pics of your Fordsen truck. Problem is though that the lighting in the museums so far was often very low, enough for the human eye but not my camera, and also i could not walk completely around most of them. Also i did my best with the pictures, some suck really bad, others are pure art.
I have 800 pictures so far, probably will take another 600 tomorrow. I have seen a total of over 100 planes and many light and heavy arms (at least 200). I took pictures of multiple angles as good as i could. Tomorrow another 350 planes to see and about 80 tanks and armoured cars, I am going to make all you guys jizz in your pants :D
Some previews :)

That SMG left me clueless, German influences on the grip for example but all other things differ, it looks like a mix of German and Soviet SMG's. Anyone got a clue? Things that pop in my head are late war experimental German design or post-war Czech design but I can't find anything on it.

Just for Tolga:
German standard-issue combat helmet M92, made from Aramid. It´s mine and in an already nicely-used condition ;D
With 5-colour camouflage cover. It´s ceonversible. In the past one side was "woodland", the other side was white snow camo. Ironically today one side is in woodland pattern while the other is in desert pattern. So basically every conscript has an Afghanistan-ready helmet ^^

I took this pic in Warsaw Tank Museum. The here seen tank participated in the fights of Warsaw Uprising, dunno exactly what happened to it, but it looks like an internal blast. Maybe the crew blew it up or it was hit in the ammo rack..

o.O I found the same tank in a war time picture.
Indications: The roof is missing, only 3 were captured, one was repaired the other 2 were used as baricades

Awesome, i see in the list there's an Easy8 and a jumbo, i just never knew the real difference between them (apart from wider tracks)
Could you tell me what the difference is (maybe with picture if the difference isn't under the hood :) )
-
Here is the Jumbo at the museum. Note the normal Sherman suspension system. The jumbo is pretty much just a regular Sherman, complete with narrow tracks, but with more armor plate welded on.
Here is the so called "easy 8". Note the beefier suspension and wider tracks. They were made in both cast and welded hull configurations.
(These photos are not from the museum)

Yes, 3 to be exact.

Wouldn't mind seeing a picture of either one of there Centurions.

T-54 (looks exactly like a T-55 to me)
They look simular because The T-55 was basicly an upgrade over the T-54. The first tank in the world to be equipped with an NBC kit.
Furthmore it had 45 rounds of ammo instead of 34. It was more safely stored away aswel. New sights, a brand new engine (significantly better then the T54's)

You don't happen to have a few early Panzers standing around, by any chance?

What are those plates on side of T-72?

What are those plates on side of T-72?
Armor! They protect the hydraulic shock absorbers. When they are clipped that are flat; unclipped they fold out to 60 degree angle.
-

Panzer I (happen to have these from a request by a friend of mine). That's the only early war Panzer they have.

In regards to the flaps on the T-72: they are RPG flaps that are designed to stop AT rockets from shooting at the front quarters of the vehicle. I'm told they didn't work at all.
PS, new photos will not be taken until the 30th. I have a reenactment this upcoming weekend and will not be working at the museum.

Thanks Kading!

Good idea for any tank. The interiors were generally natural white or ivory, rather than pure bright white.
-

Thanks Kading!
Don't base your paint on that vehicle. It was purchased from the SYRIAN Army. Though it has been repainted, the colors used may be slightly off those used in the war. The Panther at the museum is what causes me doubt as to the interior color of the Pz. I. Panther is Ordinance Tan on the inside and is considered the best restored example of its type in the country, if not the world.
American tanks were painted true white, by the way.
"Yeah, but how does that help my modelling, Kading?" I hear you asking. Well, what I am saying is that I would do a little more research to explain the discrepancy between the two paint schemes before you start mixing paint.
-
According to a 1995 issue of Finescale Modeler, the correct color for a Panzer's interior should be, among others, Tamiya XF-57. Would that be about the right one?

This explains interior color schemes of german tanks in detail:

They are waterproof bags filled with what-have-you. Tools, spare parts, personal effects. No special features are on the M-60 that allow it to be fitted with sandbags.

Ah yes, two of the most important tanks in the tour! I will go a-photographing next Saturday.
Actually, there is this one fella who did a much better walkaround than I could hope to accomplish on the M103. Aside from his WoT work, he has also been a tour guide at the museum for 10 years. It's in multiple parts that are separated by subject.

If you want specifics that aren't gone over in the videos, let me know. This will free up time to photograph the IS-3. I might even have time to photograph the grungy interior.

Nice, tx for the video. They don't show these on the EU forums. Only request I have is the suspension of the IS3 up close. The interior is always nice ofc :)

It's has torsion bar suspension, so there won't be much to see on the outside. I will see if the bars can be viewed from the fighting compartment.
-
See what you can do but you don't have to go all out and spend much time on this request though. It is more out of general interest and the stories I heard about the IS3's suspension breaking down a lot :).

The request line is open in part because I run out of ideas for what to look at. I have nearly limitless access to this collection, so it's no trouble at all.

Upon examination of the suspension, the arms seem a bit long for a tank of that period. I can see some possible problems that could have emerged from this particular configuration.

@ Kading

Off the top of my head:
American:
M-1917 6 ton tank
All manner of Shermans
M3 Stuart (USMC PTO)
M5 Stuart (ETO)
M-47, M-48, M-60, M-60A2 (Patton Series)
M-41 Walker Bulldog
M-26 Pershing
M3 Mediums, both Lee and Grant
CCVL FMC (prototype vehicle)
M-103 Heavy Tank
M-551 Sheridan
General Motors Abrams prototype (disclaimer: she's in rough shape)
Not tanks, but close:
M-18 Hellcat and M-36 Jackson
Russian:
T-34/76 (Mickey Mouse)
T-34/85
T-54
T-55
T-62
T-72
IS-3
PT-76
Not a tank, but close:
SU-100
Pretty sure that's nearly all of them.
We have, aside from the already mentioned countries, tanks from England, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, Germany, France, and Israel (though they are all of American manufacture).

Would love to take a tour through that museum, but since that´s not possible, I enjoy your pics Kading!
If you could get some interior shots of the T-54 to T-72 and especially of their gunner stations, I´d highly appreciate that! I always wondered how the gunner actually aimed the turret and fired the main gun and the machine gun, so seeing that would be really nice.

I can't remember on the T-54, but on the T-72 it has a control yoke + manual traversing and elevation wheels. The T-72 is terrifyingly small inside, btw. I can't even fit into the driver's position.
Got this photo off Google.

Thanks for the picture, looks way more complicated than I thought it would. From what I understood the maximum height of T-72 crew members was something around 1.65ish to 1.7 meters, so any "normal" sized human being would have problems getting into it.
Btw, does your museum only have MBTs? I´d love to see some other vehicles, like APCs or IFVs, too if that´d be possible.

Please excuse my American measurements, but the MAXIMUM allowed height for a Russian tanker was 5 feet, 6 inches tall. The drivers for the T-72s would have to be more like 5 foot. I am 6 foot 1 inch (about 1.8, 1.9 meters). And it isn't just that it's small inside, everyone is in a semi-reclined position, which is really hard to get up and out of the tank from.
Tanks are surprisingly complicated to operate, especially once you get into the more modern stuff.
The collection includes about 300 vehicles total, 60ish of which are Tanks. If you have heard of it, there is a decent chance we have it.

I would like to see some Pershing pictures if you don't mind. Outside and inside if you can make it. I would appreciate it.
EDIT: Persing to Pershing*

Might not be this next weekend, there is a wedding at the museum (romantic, right?). I will see what I can do, though.

Tx for the pictures and I do not believe a Jagdpanther is there right? Didnt see it on the list atleast.

No, but there is a StuG III and a Hetzer. Other German vehicles include a Pz. I, Pz. IV, Panther, multiple prime movers including an Sdkfz. 251 and a Kettenkrad. There is some weird scout jadgpanzer thing from the cold war, 2 Leopard Is, a Marder IFV, a Schützenpanzer SPz 11-2 Kurz....oh...and a Borgward remote controled demolition vehicle.
-
Exterior photos only for now. Weekend after next I might be able to pop inside and take a few photos.
This particular model is an M26A1.

Didn't have time to show anything interesting from the commander's position, but there isn't much to see anyway.

Thank you again. I saw a T-80s interior. It looks even more complicated but less chaotic even though it has more technology ;D

I think someone in this forum posted it. Not sure though.

Can someone post the scope of the cannon of the M60 tank?

Ok, I've been looking into it and I'm about 75-85% sure that it is the same basic sight picture as the Abrams, or at least earlier models of it. At some point, they will start up the M60A1 and I'll see if the scope still works. There should be a secondary scope as well, but I haven't checked. That one should work without power.
-
That would be interesting to see, thanks!
-
No luck getting the photo, doesn't look like it will happen any time soon and my camera can't focus on the lines in the secondary gunsight.
Here are the gunner's position of the StuG III, FV-214 Conqueror, and T-72M to make up for my failure.

Hi Kading, if it wouldn't be too much of a hassle, could you please do a walk-around of the Panzer IV G's interior, I think I saw you have one in the museum on the website. Particularly the driver's and radio operator's positions , but if you have the time a shot of the turret interior would be awesome! ;D

I think it's a J, actually. Also it is un-restored so it may be underwhelming. I'll get a few photos of it, though.

Damn, that's nice! They should really get it restored, I think it has much potential :D
Thank you very much Kading! ;D

Is that gun sight still in condition to sight through? I'd love to get a pic of the actual sights :o
-
It will be restored after they send it to Stow, Mass. So I won't be getting photos of that, sadly.
Muddy, I'll double check this Saturday if the optics are still in place.

So this thread hasn't been posted in in a while and I searched but didn't find anything. Found this website that let's you look around the cockpit of a Spitfire and if you mouse over the instruments it tells you what they are 8)
