Title: [Map] Sidi Bou Zid
Post by: Nerdsturm on 25-01-2012, 02:01:41
I used to map a lot for some RTS's so I figured I'd give FH2 a shot. It was  originally going to be based off of this battle(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sidi_Bou_Zid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sidi_Bou_Zid)), but due to some problems with the terrain I had to redesign it a bit part way through, and as a result it's not at all historically accurate.

Constructive criticism is welcome as this is my first map for a FPS.

Dude, nice!

Nice lighting, nice fog, nice details.

Great to see an American defense map too, as American's tend to be on the offensive in most ww2 games.

GG!

THAT !!! .... is pretty stunning!

If that is your first map in BF2 ever I'm really looking forward to see how this would play on a full server.

this looks very interesting, I see you made some defensive points and quite a lot of minor flanking routes along the main road.
is there a german spawn in the northwestern part of the map (hence the truck and tank)?

This is a really nice looking map. I do fear some blottleneck at Overlook, but otherwise great map.
And the lighting reminds of kasserine for some reason - The feel of rain.

What kind of tanks do the Germans bring to bear? are there aircrafts?

Good work there, man.

The Overlook flag can't be recaptured by the allies once it's taken and has a pretty large capture radius so I hope that won't be the case, but it is rather constricted there.

What kind of tanks do the Germans bring to bear? are there aircrafts?
Mostly light tanks: a couple of Panzer II's that stop spawning after the first flag is taken, a Panzer III and the version of the puma with a 20mm gun. There aren't any aircraft.

is there a german spawn in the northwestern part of the map (hence the truck and tank)?
That's another allied spawn, the tank is a Stuart.

Needs more green in my opinion! Tunisia barely has desert.

Going by satellite imagery of the area it looks pretty darn brown. Anyways, there is actually a decent amount of vegetation on the map, just the form of underbrush rather than trees or grass.

Going by satellite imagery of the area it looks pretty darn brown.

Most likely due to the crop fields so it would be dependent on season.

I live in Malta, which is a few 100km away from Tunisia. We share the same type of landscape i.e. garigue

Comparing the picture above and the screenshots from the map I say that Nerdstrum got it just about right. I would maybe add some more low bushes.

Congratulations, your map looks absolutely outstanding! I hope that, if it passes the testing the developers might put it through if they are interested, it will be included into the main build. To me this looks really outstanding! The light setting is perfectly matching the overall atmosphere and I can already imagine some good attack routes that might be used. This map doesn't just offer a beautiful environment, but also a variety of tactical possibilities, that many community made maps lack. Keep up your splendid work!

it looks like quite nice map but mix of ALL african statics in game somehow annoys me. I know that you're a mapper not 3D artist but this map would be thousand more fun with unique statics but I do really like some actuall placements like 76mm gun position in the rocks on a hill.

Are you implying that there's already an official Sidi Bou Zid map in the works? Regardless, it wouldn't exactly be the end of the world since, as I said before, the map is not very historically accurate so you could pretty much rename after any battle in the area and it wouldn't lose a whole lot.

What are your next plans?  :)
No idea, but I'm open to suggestions for other maps.

I actually kind of agree with this. Originally I started off using only the Mareth line houses in the outskirts of the city but I ran into a problem where, due to the hilly terrain, they weren't tall enough to block line of sight between areas, which made me switch over the white buildings(that stick out somewhat) in areas. Also, there just aren't many open buildings that match the Mareth statics and a city map with no open buildings would be pretty boring.

In the main city there's some differences in roof color and other minor details but overall I feel like everything blends together okay.

I took a walk over the map and have to say, that it looks and feels very good. Not too narrow areas, where the players get forced through a choke point and overall it seems to be created with general gameplay problems in mind. The only problem I could find, was the mortar postion on the roof of a house, where you would blow up yourself, if you aim wrong. That's caused by a taller haouse next to this position. But thats only a minor problem, that could be solved quiet fast. You have talent for sure and should apply as a mapper.  :D

I agree, map looks good.

For some reason, I posted this twice before, my post keeps disappearing. So once more: I support what Kelmola posts.

If mods like to delete posts of mine, I'd appreciate at least a pm with an explanation.

Find me a decent forum where zero content posts (outside of some approved sub-forum) are not treated as a waste of space.  Posts deleted in this forum rarely fall outside the lines of spam or insults.

Frankly, you have a very negative attitude to this forum and I wonder why you keep coming back if it is as bad as you claim it to be.  Consider this an official warning to improve your general attitude on these forums.

Very impressed from the screenshots if this is indeed your first map.  By the looks of it you really have have the fiddly details and art down.   I don't know how this would play out as is in a tourney but I will link your map to the WaW jerks.  Not a much better test of a map in my opinion as 64 people playing your map for 12 hours straight.

Awesome looking map, like playing with Nerdy and obviously appreciate his efforts to add to the content of Fh2.

at least there is promise of getting a fair shake from the incredible team over at WaW.

@ EU,
 I refer you to http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?board=22.1480
for further reference towards my previous assertion.

I harbour no ill will against this mod or any individual participants herein but I will always argue against censorship in the modern age. I can not apologize for speaking my mind and I never will.
you are welcome to counter my fact based argument but perhaps take it to PM, rather than attempting to scold me in public. That stopped working on me back in grade school during the 1980's...

I'd appreciate that, and would be happy to make any needed changes. It'd be nice to get some feedback on how the map plays.

At some point yes, but I'm taking a break for a bit. I have some real life projects that are taking up most of my time at the moment.

Awesome :)

I updated the download link on first post on this thread. The changes are very small, but some of them could have an impact on gameplay(I forgot to make the axis main uncappable, for instance), so it's probably best to use the new version for the test if possible.

We just played this in the WaW event and there was a problem.
There was no terrain generated for Low terrain details.

People with low terrain settings couldn't load in, they crashed.

Otherwise the first two flags were a tough bottleneck. Axis never got past them

I think I may try removing all the Allied spawns from the Outskirts flag, as that was the one they really seemed to have trouble with. I'll also have to increase the amount of time it takes to cap each flag, since they switched back and forth way too fast.
Title: Re: [Map] Sidi Bou Zid
Post by: sheikyerbouti on 27-02-2012, 01:02:59
ahhh, so that's why I kept crashing. it's too bad because I was looking forward to playing Nerdy's map. My buddy got to play though and said that the Church was little too rape central for that sniper because he was practically immune up there but that visually it looked cool.

Tons of peeps overall have said they loved the new maps, myself included (Battle of the Bulge rocked, a few too many trees though). I look forward to perhaps a map pack 2.0 event with tweaks and some performance improvements.

The map shows a lot of promise especially for a first timer. You certainly know how to plan flow and some of the static placement was inspired. However, in some parts I felt the map was too cluttered and had some illogical pathing. It was also somewhat to small for 64 players.

I had the pleasure I bumping into you in game and having you landing in our squad...great map dude.  Looking forward to another test run if there is one.

Refreshing game play with a nice mix of mid-range combat...challenging terrain along the sides, vertical gameplay and house to house fighting are always great things.

I don't think that allowing the WaW rally point system gives us a very accurate picture of how the map plays though.  In another test run, I'd request it off.  Kinda hard to assess the balance if you can basically move your way up with unofficial modded rally points instead of using the vanilla spawn points.  That makes any test completely askew imo.

What comes to mind after playing as Axis is cutting off the side routes occasionally so people cant just stay on the perimeter the entire time as they move in.  Make them come back towards the middle a few times with some natural barriers (rocks, etc) before they can return the outside again.  Seems that in a smaller game it would be way too easy to avoid combat.

All in all, played nicely, some very awesome areas like the mosque near the first flag on Axis right with the large arch, and the upper courtyard area between the last two flags (right side of the road for allies, left for axis), that area is great.  Some ammo nearby would be killer because by the time Axis get to that area I'm sure you'd be low on smoke and HE grenades.  Also that deep gulch on the left side as you attack that allies can shoot down into was pretty rad.  A lot of people got suckered into that area and paid the price.

GG
