Take a look at your F key on your keyboard,... 
Take a good long look at it.  Now imagine if you pressed that key it would select different ammo.

What is the single most reason you get your ass handed to you when taking on German tanks across an open plain? Well, they are better than you.  They are badass, shoot straight down the barrel, punch a hole in your face - better than you. And you? You're out of range.

Use your smoke shells and fire them up in the vacinity of the enemy tank(s), from a distance you won't be able to see the confusion you caused, because to render smoke at that distance is not something your Win98 PC can handle... anyway, once you've fired a few smokes, full throttle, and soon you'll be in range to give that German tank a few punches back.

Oh, and don't forget firing AT rounds at an infantary filled trench is as effective as running up to them with your spade held high and your trousers round your ankles. Switch your god damn ammo to HE and blow the shit out of them!

hehe, I got it first time.

I use german smoke to evacuate after getting hit a few times.  But now I'll use it to allow allied tanks to get within range.

I just dont see the point in it, I watched this guy drive his sherman from El Al base (following him in mine) we take a good few minutes to drive to the ridge (boring) he gets shot straight away, I carry on hammering the pak guns and the paznrs on the hill using a combination of all three shell types and 5 mins later the same guy rocks up in a crusader and gets hit again. 

If I was him I'd rage quit.

I would describe myself as an experienced tanker and I rarely use smoke. It´s just that I prefer to have something loaded in my barrel to defend myself rather than smoke. I use it somewhat on NA maps to retreat but at the close ranges we have in Normandy and the Ardennes it´s better to take something down with HE before you inevitably die anyway.

However it´s fun to just take a Sherman and ignore enemy tanks. Just spam HE shells on infantry with that thing from far and you will get epic results.

I'm constantly trying to remind other tankers (usually as a tanker myself) to throw smoke to let inf advance. Most tankers don't even bother with it. Then there's maps like Goodwood and Eppeldorf where every Allied tank is outgunned by every Axis tank, and I seem to be the only one online that thinks that instead of useless firing AP at the King Tiger, fire a smoke round to blind him and freak him out a bit, and keep doing that whilst saying in teamchat that the KT is in E4 or whatever, surrounded by all the smoke.

I am with Butcher. My gun should always be ready with the proper ammo. Because, you never know if the enemy see you first, then, it might be too late to fire the smoke shell. A lot of times they were too late.

The best thing to do is to go to a certain location and wait for infantry cries of spotting enemy tanks or somebody whining for armor support. Then you know, you have to make the kill from vantage position. Trying to approach German tanks in one-on-one combat in NA theatre is suicide. Like I said, they might have spotted you earlier and its already too late for blinding them with smoke. My best experience has always been ambush and especially surprise tank buttsecks. To set up an ambush in an open map like El Al, the ridge is pretty much perfect location to start, provided that there are no airplanes around.
