weird lag
« on: 16-10-2010, 13:10:38 »
Recently I got more and more lag while playing FH2. Basically lagspikes that seem to come and go in waves, Usually you'd expect lagspikes to appear when you enter a new area and new shit is loaded, but in my case even if I lay still facing a wall, the framerate drops regularly every 20 secs only to go up again after about 8 seconds. Between the spikes the game runs smooth. It is not server lag. I also had this in other games (L4D2 for example).
I have a 1.9Ghz Dual Core processor, 3 gigs of RAM, Vista 32-bit and a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400.

Turning down the graphics seems to do nothing. I have enough space on C:. Ran a Virus check and found nothing.
Any ideas?

Could be a windows error or a virus infection.
Check the Windows Event logs if any application or service reports errors or try to monitor your system with Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx if anything is using up your CPU cycles.
And use a few different online virus scanners like F-Secure http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/security/tools/online-scanner/ .

According to process explorer there doesn't seem to be much eating at the CPU. Idling usually takes up around 98% if I do nothing.

edit: when I do something on the internet my anti virus program uses up to 50% of cpu. I will shut it down the next time I play and see how it goes.

Maybe you have too many open tabs with Flash animations. Flash plugin can use a lot of cpu power.
Or check your Browser plugins, maybe one is buggy after update. I had this once in FF. Chrome even does automatic background updates of plugins.

Have you tried defragging? Also, check the temperatures of your computer.

My pc is set to defrag regularly and hwen I do it per hand it usually takes only a few minutes. How do I check the temperature?

OK, new problem: When I run process Explorer at the same time as BF2 I get kicked from the server because PnkbstrB.exe initialisation failed.

If CPU and RAM are not the problem, check the disk usage and the videocard usage.
I am guessing you PC is getting a bit older and is used intensively. Might be time to start looking for a new one.

download this http://uppit.com/hbq7qmaw1tg0/HWMonitor.rar

then rune FH2 for like 20mintes "to get every thing nice a hot"
then really fast open HWMonitor  and take a screen shot and post it so we can see you pc Temps!

allso "1.9Ghz Dual Core processor" dose not tell me shit because you could have a Athlon x2 witch is better then a Pentium D or you could have a Core 2 Duo witch is better then all 3 "you see were im going with this"

so if you could plz post the name of the CPU it would help and if you don't know it download CPUz and it will tell you

also 1.9ghz running Vista with 3 gigs of ram
I would say downgrade to xp or upgrade to win7

and download this http://uppit.com/jz3lrbspz5ok/gpu-z.rar
it will show your GFX card specs  post a screen shot of it

This was taken quite shortly after playing for about an hour (a lag filled hour)

edit: Now after almost ten minutes most temperatures have fallen by about 5 - 10 %

you Cpu is running a some what hot but i don't think thats it

you could allway down load a Auslogics Disk Defrag "its free"  but it will defrag better then windows default
use "defrag and optimize"

also run Disk clean up an have it delete some of you "shadow copys" and restorpoints (it will keep your last restorpoint )

i know my english is not the best! :o lol
but i know what im talking about

Also to add to this
have you every had this happen before and what was the  last thing you did "that you can remember"
before FH2 was laging

I had this happen before. Those times the reason was always my C: disk being too full. After I deleted temp files it was always solved. However, this is not the case this time. Other than that the only thing I remember doing that could have something to do with it is updating the drivers for my graphics card some time back but I don't think that had an immediate effect on performance back then, otherwise I would have noticed I think.

I'm trying the defragmentation now, it always felt a bit fishy how fast windows did it.

i would have to say try and defrag it with Auslogics Disk Defrag and see if it helps "it should some what"

ya but if it was your Drivers i think you would see it

you could allwas try and downgrade you drivers and see if that works if it dose not remember to install your new drivers lol

"I know saying downgrade you drivers sounds really dumb but ATI is allways haveing problems with not full testing the updates to see if they will work allmost 100%" (sounds like microsoft)lol

but if all this dose not work then hopefully someone can help you solve this because thats all that i can think off

if some on dose help solve this could you post it. "id really like to know why and how it was fix"
