Help Azreal Destroy (Virtual) Worlds
« on: 27-12-2011, 04:12:00 »
So the time has come. Over the next 4 months I'll be saving my money until I come home from college in April. At that point I'll be saving the money I make from my summer job even more so, until I have enough to build a truly epic computer, with the sole purpose of a ridiculously fast and powerful gaming rig. I'm looking at about $2,000 as my budget, and I'm need of some serious nerd help in a few areas. Here's my build so far:
-----
case - ALREADY PURCHASED
Western Digital 500GB external HDD - ALREADY PURCHASED
-----
motherboard
processor
video card x2
RAM
SSD
power supply
optical drive x2

My main concern right now is the processor. I've heard about the AMD 8-core processor which looks very interesting and is a lot cheaper, but I've never used any AMD products before. Only Intel/NVIDIA stuff. If I go the AMD route, I would have to change up the first 3 parts of my build, so hopefully I can get some comments on that.

Also, if anyone has any other suggestions/general comments or sees any type of problem with what I've listed, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

I would go for the amd phenom 1100t that can be overclocked to 4ghz or more and save you some good bucks instead of going for the I7 that cost way more money than it.

If I was to go with AMD instead of Intel, I'd choose the newer 8-core, FX 8120.

All my PC's have been AMD-based systems and none of them have missed a beat.

My original PC (with an Athlon 64 3800+) has got over 6 years under it's belt and it's still chugging along quite happily.

And my current PC has got a Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition (3.2GHz), which will run all day long at 3.96GHz or at 3.6 as a quad-core (the CPU is actually a quad with 2 cores disabled, which you can unlock with the right mobo).

And I should point out that's only a very rough overclock, basically just a higher multiplier and more voltage with a small reference clock increase.

Although I did have problem when I upgraded my mobo a few weeks ago, I'll go into detail later (it's a long story).

Intel, much like Apple, simply charge too much for their products... :P

Actually, I thought this as well, before I saw the comparissons and the AMD 1100T has better performance and is faster, even though it has 6 cores.

See it yourself

^ Indeed more cores doesn't have to actually mean it will perform better... And since we're still at games and apps using max 4 cores, 8 cores is still a long way to be utilized efficiently.

You just Cant go without a SSD harddrive for your OS, and do Not forget that what is on the market now, is most likely something entirly different when the summer arrives.

GEFORCE GTX 560 TI is very nice graphscard though :)

and good coiche on the WD hdd

He's going for GTX 580 SLI! A puny 560 is nothing compared to that... Although you gotta wonder... Do you really want to spend a 1000 $ for 2 power hogs when the next year you could probably get 1 with the same power, less noise and heat and for a cheaper price...

P.S. Fix your links...

This!

You can only get so much performance by increasing noise and electricity bill too much.

If the budget is $2000, only $1000 of it goes to fast and powerful gaming rig. The other $1000 is for mostly the show-off factor. ;)

Well it's not only this but depending on the resolution he plans to game on GTX 580 SLI might be an overkill... However the best option IMO would be to pick up 1 card now... And later when they get a bit cheaper with the release of the next generation pick up another one and enjoy 100+ FPS on 2560x1600 maxed out on any game... (Well except Metro 2033, that's a tough nut to crack  :P).

After doing some research I think I'm going to scrap this plan. By the time I get back from college in the summer, new tech like Ivy Bridge processors, NVIDIA 600 series/AMD 7000 series video cards should be out. I think I'll wait for that stuff.

@Slayer: 120 GB SSD for OS and some games; 500 GB external HDD for everything else.

But for those who were curious, this is why I wanted 2x GTX 580s

EDIT: A couple of Tweets from DICE's Community Manager, zh1nt0, point out that the "recommended requirements" will be good enough to let you run the game on at medium. As for Ultra? Er, well...

In response to "would one GTX580 run it on ultra, or do I need two of them?", the response was a simple "2."

IMO, 120 GB SSD is enough for OS and applications, but not for games. For example, my Steam folder has only 2 games installed and weights 55 GB. My system partition (OS + Program Files with some heavy applications + User data + Restore points (25% of drive by default)) after year takes another 50 GB.

Also, strange thing: I haven't noticed any difference in loading time of FH2, be it on SSD or on 5 years old HDD, though for other stuff SSD is surely beneficial.

the 580 sucks compared to price and usage.

That's because of the hype. Wait for a few moment before people help themselves and rationalise the prize.

I've seen GTX 590 as well

http://pressroom.nvidia.com/easyir/customrel.do?easyirid=A0D622CE9F579F09&version=live&prid=736275&releasejsp=release_157&xhtml=true

You need to cough up about US$ 700 for that.
