Off-Topic / Re: Iran
« on: 23-06-2009, 02:06:21 »
End of the day, Iran will change some time fairly soon. If not due to the current events, then in the near future. The moment people get enough freedom to realise what freedom is... they'll keep pushing for more of it. They've been "corrupted" by teh interwebs and suchlike ;)

Personally... I hope them the best. But I fear there will be a lot more bloodshed.

None of the ingredients for a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster? lame! ;)

(Interesting, a gin and tonic is apparently lethal... yet a random combination of several spirits and juices scored higher...)

Off-Topic / Re: Where did you get your avatar and signature?
« on: 12-06-2009, 16:06:07 »
The avatar is a picture of the lead singer of a band I like, while the sig is just the two names I use ingame, depending on whether it's FH1 or FH2.

Doubting anyone can name the band used for the avatar though... ;)

It works until someone sets them up in a bunker, blocking exiting or entrance

Indeed. That was something of a favourite trick in Desert Combat... drop sandbags on the stairs in a building. Shoot people in relative safety from the top floor, knowing no-one can climb the stairs to face you.

Like so many ideas... nice in theory... but again, technical limitations :(.

After half a year of regular practice, you won't die as often as you used to do ;D

Hell, a week and you'll be far better. Like so many things, in Forgotten Hope the trick is to know what NOT to do, rather than what to do. Once you know what you shouldn't do, you can experiment and play around at your leisure really... and there really is such a large amount to play around with in Forgotten Hope :)

This thread brings back great memories of the sandbags in early versions of Desert Combat for BF1942. They had so many bugs it was unbelievable, but that didn't stop them being fun.... *sigh*

Anyway, it's a nice idea, but I can't see how it would work too well in FH2. Perhaps a special pick up kit that has a sandbag or two? But that's a lot of work.. for not much cover. I doubt too many sandbags were moved around during combat in real life.

I will surely try the MP but I do not feel I am ready yet for that.

Just leap headlong into multiplayer. If you stick to being infantry initially and stay near team mates, you really can't go far wrong. People say FH has a steep learning curve, but I think that's only the case if someone is impatient and tries to run before they can walk. If you keep your eyes open, stick to team mates like glue and have some patience, you'll find yourself having fun in no time.

Suggestions / Re: Repair Delay for Static Weapons
« on: 31-05-2009, 22:05:04 »
This would be a terrible idea. As it stands already, AT/AA guns are massively vulnerable to tanks, planes and arty, and already take a good minute to repair as it is. And in that time, you can usually expect a plane or tank to return anyway, usually scoring an easy kill. And that's assuming an arty bombardment hasn't destroyed several guns/mg's/radios all at once... damage that would take a number of engineers many minutes to repair.

As it stands now, manning AT/AA guns is about the worst job in the game. You spend half your time repairing things (speaking of which, anyone ever seen anyone get more than 2 repair points?), and the other half generally being slaughtered by planes/tanks/arty. Why would you want to make it even more unbearable?

But but .. Pacific :(

The trouble is... you'd miss it even if they did add the Pacific. As far as I'm aware, no-one has yet been able to implement BF1942 scale naval warfare... and that's what made the Pacific in FH1. Without the huge naval side of it... you just get island hopping over and over and over. And that would get boring very quickly.

Unlike the Eastern Front, that has a huge amount of variation. Huge tank battles, huge air battles, huge city battles, battles in snowy winter conditions, battles in temperate climates, large scale river landings etc etc..

In FH1 those Japanese AT riflenades were quite effective and it was easy to kill Shermans with them.

As well as one shot planes, which always pissed off pilots. And best of all, they would damage any ship. Enough of them could sink a carrier. I remember once an American destroyer beaching next to the last Japanese flag to bombard it... within 5 minutes it had been AT rifle naded to hell. In large enough numbers it could take out tanks fairly well, as well as easily destroy jeeps, AT guns and whatnot.

Ah... most flexible FH kit ever ;D

General Discussion / Re: Worst Map You Can Think Of
« on: 25-05-2009, 23:05:29 »
Damn, was going to post the screenshot I took way back of hailer... but someone beat me to it with my own bloody screen shot!  :P

Anyway, my idea... The opening stages of the Doolittle Raid. The Americans get two carriers, three heavy cruisers, one light cruiser, eight destroyers, and two resupply ships. The Japanese get a small fishing boat. The objective is to destroy the fishing boat before it can warn Japan of the incoming fleet.

Though I suspect it would be almost as one sided as Kharkov was in FH1 before the addition of the Panzer-III.

The PTRD could penetrate 40MM of armor. The panzer III and IV during the early eastren front had 30MM of side armor

To be fair, that PTRD penetration distance was for under 100 metres range under ideal conditions, and I've seen it listed as 35mm just as often. And considering how little damage it would do even if it did penetrate.. you could hardly call it an effective AT weapon.

That's not to say it wasn't a good weapon. Against armoured vehicles or light tanks you could really do some damage. But then hey... why develop a decent infantry AT weapon when you instead are pumping out tens of thousands of IL2's, arty and tanks?

I still think we should do early war, yes we should. Russkis can get in later.

Personally I'd add Russia next, then Poland in 39, then Netherlands/France/Belgium etc in 40. And *then*... maybe consider the pacific.

I did love the 39/40 maps in FH1, much more so than most of the Pacific ones.

Give me the eastern front before the pacific! Far more interesting and varied... besides... without the large ship support that the engine had in BF1942... most of the fun of the pacific is drained away instantly. It was those huge fleet on fleet battles that made the pacific so much fun in FH1.
