IIRC a cop was actually smart and knew it was a STG44, so refused to take it and told her how valuable it is.  So she's gonna sell it instead.  Good on that cop.

In LA they do it every few months.  Usually it's people bringing in broken guns they don't want and aren't even worth 100 bucks.  But occasionally a Lugar or such shows up from a deceased vet.  Sadly, in LA, they don't tell them to go sell it.  They smelt them.... :(

Really? Is there a limit to how many functional weapons that can be brought in?

I've been told a story about an old woman that went to the police with an m1919 that she found at her home ( she was from a village in the north of luxembourg where a lot of fighting was going on during botb)
The police chap knew what it was and offert her 50€ for the browning. She took the money and surprsingly came back a day later telling the policeman that she found another gun at her attic. It was an MP44. The policeman gave her again 50€ and everybody was happy.
There are some people who are veeeeeeery lucky.

Not a clue.  These things are generally very ridiculous.  You either get smart people bringing in broken guns, or idiots/old widowers who aren't idiots bringing in incredibly valuable guns.  The idea is to "get guns of the street."  Never is it questioned why people who actually commit crimes with guns would turn in their guns. |:

I remember years back when they did this in Maine (Portland I think).  Smart people stood outside the police station bought the decent stuff off idiots bringing in there guns for a little more then the cops offered.  ;D
