Am I safe....

Hi yesterday i clicked on a link to a site and it clammied i had a virus and wouldn't let me leave. So i restarted and it was still there, so i system restored to before i clicked the link, am i virus free? Because i have some important financial aid stuff for college which requires my ss#.

scan ur PC with an anti-virus/spyware scanner


i use AVG wich came free with my PC

Since when have we been able to see if your PC has a virus?

Do a virus scan. Its easier.  ;)

O i forgo to mention the problem appears to be gone and i have no virus protection.....do you know of any free scans that are safe?

download Avira AntiVir Personal -- it's free and one of the best antivirus programs out there. Also download Spybot Search and Destroy which is the best antispyware program out there and is free as well.

I would guess it was a advertisement page of a pseudo-antivirus software which actually is a spyware/malware thing.

this is the first virus i have ever gotten :( been safe for bout 15 years.... and thanks hockywarrior

Well you can fuck for 15 years without a condom, your first STD can still come after 16 years. :)
Ok that was way OT, but you can trust Avira, it might not be the most up to date freeware tool, but it definitly is safer than having none. Hence the condom reference :)

I would suggest Avast! Antivirus.

Protects against virus as well as spyware, there is a free version, the one you pay for is meant for large offices that needs much more internet safety than the common man.
The only cutback I know with the free version is that every 6 months you need to get a new "code" for it (but it's simple. Press one button, you get an email with the code, enter it in the program and voilá, 30 seconds effective work at most).

By the way, worth mentioning is that Avast runs and updates completely on its own. you get a simple pop-up message that disappears after 4 seconds saying "Avast has been updated", really conveniant
