The Hunting Gear Thread
« on: 08-10-2012, 16:10:59 »
Howdy!

I've been trying to come up with a idea to make a thread with for a while. Since every other thread for something has already been made I decided to make one about my favorite hobby hunting. This thread is for y'all to post your hunting stuff collections. I don't know how many of you Europeans hunt since you all are not allowed to have guns, but I talk to a German once who said that hunting with bows and arrows was popular in his country.

My Gear:

Springfield 12 gauge shotgun model 67
for hunting turkeys

Mosin Nagant M44 with bayonet chopped off and scope mounted
for hunting deers

Mossy Oak camo overalls
Mossy Oak camoflage hat
Mossy Oak water proof suspenders

What do you all hunt and/or use for hunting?

I follow with mudra on this...And you take a Mosin nagant M44 for hunting deer? Why not a Scoped M91/30 then? These dont come expensive, have origenal scopes, better accuracy and not a bone breaking recoil aswel

And please dont bring=Its just a mosin nagant, they made 17 million of em

All of these rifles where made in WW2. And all of these got used. Each and every one of them carries history

I even hate it when people Take Schmidt rubins, swedish mausers, yugoslavian mausers and such and turn them into.........guns with AR15 stocks and foregrips and scopes the size of the empire state building with the barrel cutted in half...........They might not saw combat.....But that still doesnt mean you can destroy the history of these weapons

If you want a pimped out gun then buy yourself a commericial AR15 or remington.. If you want a good hunting rifle, get something commerical aswel or buy an origenal scoped rifle.

I do not mind Scope mountings wich do not require any drilling or who destroy something in the process.

What makes me happy is that there are some gunsmiths dedicated to fixing sporterized guns.  Apparently my Krag-Jorgenson was a sporter that the guy I bought it from completly refurbished back into it's original glory.  And tbh, you would never be able to tell the stock was ever cut down...the guy did a remarkable job on it.

::)

Not sure how restrictions on the ownership of certain types of weapons (mostly ones more suited to war than anything else) equates into 'no guns allowed' full-stop.

In answer to the question, yes I have been out vermin controlling once or twice.  Shot the odd rabbit or squirrel with an air rifle, the odd pigeon, squirrel or rat with a shotgun.

I have had 3 or 4 goes at driven pheasants, but only ever bagged one.  Not that I expected to get any at all really, was mostly just grateful to have a go.

But I don't actually own any weapons beyond a .22 air rifle (which I've not had an opportunity to properly use yet).  I just borrow one of my Dad's shotguns.

I've oddly yet to go hunting.  I wouldn't mind it, just never have the time/money for it, plus I'm unsure how I'd be in actually taking a life, even the life of a deer or bird.  It's odd, I don't mind eating animals, but when it comes to the killing, anything above a fish I get weird about.  The only times I've killed something other than fish was a couple squirrels attacking birds in our backyard (fighting over bird feeder), and a mouse that I put out of it's misery when I found out my dad used the sticky traps that don't actually kill, just trap, the mouse.  But even then I first tried to free it, but when I realized it was so glued in that any freeing would mean breaking it's bones, I just set it down on the lawn, took aim with my pellet rifle, and put him out of misery.  I then went around, gathered all the sticky traps (I thought he had used the normal spine breaking ones...) and threw them away.  My dad was rather angry, but I didn't care, and went out to buy good traps with my own money.

In the top 10 "number of guns per capita by country"-list, five of the countries are in Europe. No guns indeed ::) .

I use this nice-looking, modern ingenuity:

Wind, water and scent proofed, breathing, moisture releasing, and appropriately colored. As far as firearms go, I use a 12 gauge O/U.

Destroying history is bad, but....hmm, I sold my Mossy and I was even thinking of having 3. A scoped PE mount one, a traditional finnish M37 that I would NEVER modify, and a random one to rebuilt it into a match rifle with match ammo, so let the guy do whatever he does with his rifle as he pleases.

Also buddy, chopping off the bayonet was not a good idea. Those rifles are tested and zeroed with the bayonet still attached, removing it will cause some serious accuracy problem.

As for hunting gear, I got myself some russian mossy suit for snipers, both version, the snow one and the one for woodland, I fully recommend them as they are heavy duty, and many times the aftermarket mossy ones dont last long because they are made just for hunting, not for combat.

Later on Im going to pick more gear.

Lee Enfield and a bath robe. If I have to walk into my woods, I will wear a german parka or FJ smock depending on how cold it is.

Never whacked a deer, moose or bear.  My hunting buddy died a couple years back of cancer and I have not found the desire to bother with it since.  To be honest the most we ever did is walk around talking shit in the woods with guns.  During that time I carried an 8mm German mauser, a 8mm turk decked out with all the latest shit, a double barrel coach gun(12GA) and an ak-47 semi auto type rifle.  Best times of my life despite all the game that got away.  The one groovy thing we had was a nice GPS radio that could help us stay apart and yet work together for driving dear (we could talk and drive dear that we spotted on the mini map.)  Pretty fun hunting tech.
