Hmmm both Due Date and Drag Me To Hell would get a 5 / 10 from me.
Enjoyable as TV movies for an evening, but absolutely nothing that you'd want to see more than once.

Well you are German, not a people renowned for their taste.

But maybe it's because I'm sick, every bit of distraction is welcome. Though I will re-watch DMTH, certainly I will.

Invasion of the Body-stealers

7/10... It just lacks something, can't put my finger on it, but its still a pretty good film.

Also...
Down Periscope

8/10... Funny movie, bugged me how serious one of the officers was though.

Låt den rätta komma in (Let the right one in)

The Swedish original, not the newly released American remake. After watching it I gotta say I feel kinda embarrassed it took so long for me to see it. It really is that good.

It tells the story of Oscar, living in suburb to Stockholm with his mother sometime during the late 70's. Oscar is constantly getting bullied in school and has no friends. Until he meets special girl who moves in next door...

8 out of 10

Battle Los Angeles

Don't expect to learn much about the aliens, zero story if you don't count the Staff Sergeant's 'trauma'. Feels unfinished. But a lot of action and nice SFX. Had too much fun for a 6, so 7/10 it is.

Saw a bunch of movies lately, but I''l start with the most recent one:

Sucker Punch

Zack Snyder's movies just work for me. Dawn o/t Dead, 300, Watchmen, he just knows how to make enjoyable movies (okay, let's just forget about that owl movie). Sucker Punch was no different, imo.
In short, it's about a traumatized girl Baby Doll who gets locked up in an insane asylum, which doubles as a brothel. To cope with her newfound sorrows she escapes into a fantasy world, where she meets a man (Scott Glen) who tells her to find 5 objects to help her get out. Helped by 4 other girls in the asylum (Rocket, Sweet Pea, Blondie & Amber) Babydoll has 5 days to find the items before one of the brothel's big shot customers will arrive to deflower her.
The rest is better watched than explained, so check the trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dNEI4Kptrc&feature=fvwrel

This movie is getting a lot of flak for being empty, easy, sexist, too reliant on CGI, etc., but that wasn't my experience at all. I found it to be quite original and a lot deeper than I expected after seeing the trailer last year. Syder shows balls making a movie that's indeed shallow and sexist on the surface but is about so much more things casual viewers will probably miss. The irony is right there, in the title.
The movie is not perfect however. The director is way too fond of his slo-mo action shots and relies too much on over-the-top CGI setpieces while the movie would actually better off if toned down a bit. Which isn't really a bad thing, it's just that it feels oldfashioned, almost un-original, for such a cutting edge film. It is a fantasy movie, I admit, but the trick is to make these fantasies look believable and you don't get that by just letting the computer pump out the most awe inspiring vistas you can come up with. You get that by, in this case, a brutal WWI-era trench fight between our girls and German steampunk stormtroopers.

So, not perfect but tons of fun then. Because I wanted to like this movie the few missteps still grate a bit, but besides that it's a solid 3/5, or heck, a 4/5.

I watched "big red one".
the movie seemed quite good until i figured out at minute 25 that the german standard tank in north afrika are sherman fireflies...                   4/10 so far

then i watched "battle of the bulge" about 10 mins until i figured out that the german standard tank for the ardennes is a m60 patton tank                    cant judge this film either

i just cant stand movies in which the tanks are so obviously bad. they didnt even bother to fake them.
if tanks are at least modelled after the original like in "band of brothers" its cool. even saving private ryan had good tiger replicas if you compare it to other movies.

looking forward to see this movie: "burnt by the sun 2"
the tanks there arent perfect but you have to look 2 times til you see they are fake (the "wheels" of the panzer IV and the strange barrel of it (neither short nor long barrel). and most important: you know which tank thats supposed to be, in this case a panzer IV.

min 3:00 - 4:30 is hilarious

- does anybody know a movie where they have "real" tanks or at least modelled tanks so you know what they are supposed to be?
- im asking this here because i dont think its worth creating another thread for it and it has roughly to do with this topic

Modern Finnish warmovies (Talvisota, Tali-Ihantala) use real ones.

Sucker punch - 8/10

Storyline was a bit simple and a bit lolwut, but the film was never about that. The visuals and audio were brilliant.

Battle o/t Bulge is just a bad movie (and the tanks make it worse), but please give Big Red One another chance because besides faulty tanks it's a really great movie, if maybe a little odd here and there.
B.R.O. was a labour of love by director Samuel Fuller, a WWII veteran himself, and the movie is partly/mostly based on his experiences in the war. With a small budget and hardly any cooperation from the studio you have to forgive the anachronistic hardware on display. If movie god Steven Spielberg can't muster up one real Tiger for his big studio picture imagine how hard it must've been for a genre-director in the 70's to film a whole tank battle with proper german tanks?  ;)

Lead actor Lee Marvin served in WWII too, but in the Pacific theatre. He was a marine sniper. Not that it really matters but it shows that the people involved at least were sincere. And it has Luke Skywalker in it, shooting nazi's!

Oh, and did you get the reconstruced version, or the older cut-to-bits theatrical version?

Watched Michael Mann's Manhunter last night. I'm a big fan of the book Red Dragon but I had only seen 2002's adaptation which was clearly made to complete the trilogy with Anthony Hopkins as Lecter.
Manhunter is from '86 and I was curious if I would find this "original" better than the more recent Red Dragon, since I'm usually all for original when compared to remakes. In the end I must conclude that both are good movies and both have their flaws. But I think my preference still lies with Red Dragon because it somehow "flows" better as a movie and is more true to the book.
But anyway, I liked it. ***

Hi, me again.

so i watched "tali-ihantala". and i can just recommend it to everyone. its one of the best war movies ive ever seen. thx for the information about this film, a shame i didnt know it before.

- real stugs, t-34, t-26
- panzerfausts, focke wulf and so on
- and badass finns in ambush positions

and you see the interior and combat IN those tanks

the only thing i could say "against" that movie is that i got confused what soldier did what and who is who, but thats just me confusing/ being to stupid to get all those finnish names :D

and i learned a bit finnish: perkele, perkele, perkele!

9/10
