Operation Epsom, also known as the First Battle of the Odon, was a Second World War British offensive that took place between 26 and 30 June 1944, during the Battle of Normandy. The offensive was intended to outflank and seize the German-occupied city of Caen, a major Allied objective in the early stages of the invasion of northwest Europe. Preceded by attacks to secure the lines of advance, Operation Epsom was launched early on 26 June, with units of the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division advancing behind a rolling artillery barrage.

The town of Argentan

The town of Argentan is an unassuming little town on the Orne River. However, like most unassuming French towns it was thrust into the limelight in the bitter months of 1944. Heavily bombed by allied planes during the intial D-Day landings, the towns fame came during the push by the American 3rd army to cut of the Germans in the Falaise Pocket from the south. While the Candian/British forces attacked from the north in Operation Totalise and Tractable, and the Poles fought to hold Hill 262, the first American units began their push into Argentan.

This weeks map:
Falaise Pocket FHT

The overall Allied plan for Normandy was for the British units to draw out the German panzer units in the East while the Americans prepared to breakout in the west. The Germans played accordingly and sent virtually all of their available armoured formations to the British sector. The British would make limited attempts at breakouts and expanded the line in operations like Goodwood which only had the effect of drawing in more German forces.

This weeks map:
Villers Bocage FHT

The 22nd Brigade group entered Villers-Bocage during the morning of 13 June, and its lead elements moved quickly to secure Point 213, a commanding area of high ground to the east. However, the British were caught unawares by Tiger I tanks of the SS Heavy Panzer Battalion 101. In fewer than 15 minutes numerous tanks, anti-tank guns and transport vehicles fell victim to the German force, the vast majority being destroyed by SS-Obersturmführer Michael Wittmann's tank. Point 213's defenders were cut off and taken prisoner, and a German attack was launched against the town during the afternoon. Although this ran into an ambush and suffered significant losses, after six hours the British commander decided to withdraw his force to a defensive position outside the town—a move that was accomplished, before nightfall, largely without interference.

We also have fantastic news regarding our next FH1 campaign. Including two interviews with the main Generals from both sides.

Operation Lilliput

Operation Lilliput, Buna - New Guinea, 1942.

After the defeat of the Japanese at Milne Bay, the Allies took the offensive in late 1942 with an attack on the Buna–Gona–Sanananda area of Papua. In this offensive, the KPM fleet was essential to the attacking force: virtually all of the troops, weapons, and supplies were carried by Dutch convoys of one or two vessels. These convoys, collectively known as Operation Lilliput, used the KPM  vessels Balikpapan, Bantam, Bontekoe, Both, Cremer, Janssens, Japara, Karsik, Maetsuycker, Patras, Reijnst, s’Jacob, Swartenhondt, Tasman, Thedens, Van den Bosch, VanHeemskirk, Van Heutz, Van Outhoorn, Van Spillbergen, and Van Swoll.

Such dangerous operations were not undertaken without loss. On 8 March 1943, s’Jacob was sunk off Oro Bay by Japanese bombers; Bantam fell victim to a similar attack later in the month, and was run aground as it was about to sink. Van Heemskirk was also sunk by aircraft at Oro Bay in April, and several other ships were seriously damaged by bombs.

In December 1942, with the campaign at Buna in jeopardy, and no landing craft available, the former train ferry Karsik  was pressed into service as an emergency tank landing ship, carrying four M-3 Stuart tanks of the Australian 2/6th Armoured Regiment to Oro Bay. This convoy (imaginatively named Operation Karsik) was a great success, and the tanks played a decisive role in the fighting. A second such voyage (Operation Tramsik) was quickly undertaken.
