Bug Reporting / MG position on Panther resetting after use
« on: 27-05-2010, 12:05:35 »
I recently noticed that the Panther's top MG cannot be 'positioned' to not-obscure the view of the commander/rotating view. When you point the MG upwards/outwards it will reset itself when switching back to the #1 position.

In contrast, at least with Shermans, the gun will stay fixed in the last forced position. This is handy when trying to get better left/sideview when using the CTRL-rotate functionality.

I prefer the behavior of the Sherman here, since it's more realistic. Hope to see this implemented with the Panther too :)

Off-Topic / Traveller's Thread
« on: 24-05-2010, 15:05:04 »
Added by Flippy: Since we get a whole bunch of "Im going to [insert place here]" threads, I thought why not make a general traveller's thread in which everyone can share their experiences of travelling either within your own country or abroad.

Share your memories, good and bad times, experiences and advices. Also, if you are planning to go somewhere, you can use this thread to ask for advices and such about target locations and whatnot.

So. Another 'going to' topic, although a bit different this time I guess since I'm not really a tourist there.

I'm going to southern France - to be precise, Beaucaire, a small village just below Avignon. Going there with the girlfriend, so ww2 stuff is low on the list. We will sleep on my mothers sailingship, have no car and hence depend on public transport and a few bikes. I've been n the region about 8 times now, so not looking for the typical stuff everyone knows I guess :)

Me and my gf are both art/photographers so we enjoy some museums, but we just like to relax and have a good and cheap time basically. Any local advice on 'less touristic' stuff that is beautiful, fun or tasty is welcome!

I will be visiting by train
- Avignon & Nimes (culture, shopping)
- Arles (centre of photography in Juli, we're too early sadly)

By bus
- Saintes Maries-de-La-Mer (I think the easiest reachable nice beaches from Beaucaire, right?)
- Aiges Mortes (beautiful old town)
- Pont do Gard (Culture, swimming, walking)

I'm curious if there are some kind of special cheap train tickets that allow more travel in say a weekend, or a whole day or something ?

any other advice also welcome :)

Off-Topic / Axis & Allies boardgame fans - unite online!
« on: 25-04-2010, 14:04:06 »
AXIS & ALLIES (By Hasbro)

Axis & Allies is a 1998 turn-based strategy game closely based on the board game of the same name. For fans of the real thing, it is vastly superior to the real time strategy 2004 variant with the same name. If you, like I did, once admired vague friends for having this boardgame but rarely ever be able to play it due to limited time or lack of people interested...this is your thing ;)

Modes : Singleplayer, Multiplayer (TCP/IP, IPX, and Warzone)
Platform : Windows
Release : 1998
Status : Abandonware (free to download)

Download location : http://ewarzone.com/downloads/AAStarterPackFull43.exe
This is the FULL game (30mb, without video and music).

The latest version is 4.3, a bugfixed version of the original released by Hasbro. Fixes include :

Quote
Unit lock...maximum units on the board increased from 300 to over 1000.
Battleship bombardment bug...use as many battleships as you want in an amphibious assault without locking up the game.
SecureDice...defeats any dice hack
New chat commands
DirectX9.0 fix
Anti-Aircraft gun bugs fixed
Odds grapher
Editor...edit ipc's and tech

Known problems and issues :
- Cannot alt-tab out of the game (it will crash)
- Low resolution only (I set LCD screen to show 1 on 1 pixels so I have small but sharp image)
- Often needs 'compatibility mode' in XP/Vista/W7 set to 'Win 98'

So why still play an ancient game with some limitations and simple 2d graphics? Simple. It is the ONLY available computergame that is identical to the boardgame. Not only that, but it can be played against and with computers, meaning you do not need 5 players all the time.

There are some alternatives (payed for browser based, buggy java-based). I much prefer this version.

------ MULTIPLAYER ONLINE ------

The game is fully supported by the excellent Warzone client. You can do a direct connection to an IP if you want, the Warzone client makes arranging and finding a game a lot easier however.
You can download it here : http://ewarzone.com/downloads/WarZoneInstall.exe

I hope through this topic we can get a small 'scene' started to play the occasional game of A&A online together, either against each other or against computer based opponents!

Lately I have become more aware of a common phenomenon where people are seated or standing behind some form of cover that leaves part of their body exposed. Aiming at the unexposed bodypart however does not result in hit indication or a kill - irregardless of the weapon, including highly zoomed and accurate snipers. Obviously I took bulletdrop into account.

In more and more maps I am starting to find these annoying 'quirks'. I seem to have the impression that some people are deliberately exploiting these places where visual and factual cover do not match. Even stranger is that they *can* often fire from their position through whatever is blocking the shots from my side.

--- For example, Purple Heart lane from the 2nd MG position from the river, sniping the little wooden house on the end of the bridge. Two persons were on the ground next to it - stationary. I wasted 2 entire clips experimenting with angles without succes. One of them sniped me in the end :) I only tried this once (yesterday) but I will experiment with this in the future.

--- Point du Hoc, leftmost bunker from allied side (near first allied spawn position in the open field). If you are on the left of this bunker, you are looking towards a small hill. Behind this hill there are bushes, with one open gap. In this gap there are often people with MG42 or rifle. And in many occasions on that particular place, I fail to hit them although they look perfectly and clearly exposed - in the end usually getting killed after many shots.

--- Tunis, I think it is Prophet's gate (right entrance through the city wall from Allied perspective). Between the crates you see a building where there are sandbags on the first floor. Using sniperkit I have been unable on many occasions to hit people seated or even standing behind these bags. The distance is very short, so people fill your view quite nicely with the sniper and I could pick headshot, belly etc. I tried this for about 15 minutes, and found I mostly hit nothing there (but occasionally I did, depending on position of the person)

There are many other such spots on maps, but I only recently starting to research them a bit better.
Let me be clear that I usually have no problem hitting anything at any range - I have a large 24" screen, stable ping of <40, plenty of FPS and a decent aim. But it is the repeated fail to kill a target despite obvious exposure on the same places over and over that are quite obviously now becoming exploitable purposely.

I attributed this effect partly on my geometry settings or the distance (LOD). But even on high settings and closer shooting distances I get the same results. When getting very close you can usually make the shot, so there *is* some space to shoot through apparently...

Community Polls / Vehicle/weapon waiting ethics - a poll
« on: 11-04-2010, 12:04:17 »
I'm curious what the current morale is on 'waiting for objects'.

I think the types of behavior are :

A) Get-a-ticket
Wait in-line, he who waits longest gets the tank/airplane/weapon. Screw anyone who comes later!

B) Cunning as a fox
Press E like a madman, know the exact spot of the tank, count the seconds till the next spawn. Screw anyone who was standing there !

C) My Precious
Since you died in your tank, you are emotionally engaged and hence you have a RIGHT at your tank. It has your name on it, and in every way, you are entitled to it. Screw everyone else!

------------

I'm inclined to say I am somewhere between A and B, depending on who is around me (Squadmates get the A treatment, people who had the same tank for ages get the B treatment).

What *IS* however the ethical thing to do at this moment ? Let yourself be heard!

General Discussion / Report-O-Lamers topic
« on: 11-04-2010, 01:04:08 »
To increase public awareness of 'griefers' I stared this little posting. I usually dont worry too much about individual griefers, but once whole clans start to do lame things with mutual consent...I start to get annoyed.

Below two cases, feel free to contribute your own experiences and warnings. Please no warnings of possible 'cheaters' since that is a vague and hard to prove area. Just grievance that you saw with your own eyes, 100% clear.

Case #1 Clan 'MaPR@'

I noticed that I got 'found' in impossible situations all the time. Unlikely and unprobable 'detections' of me and my squadmates for long period of time started to get fishy. In the end it turned out that one of their clanmembers ('Ladislav') was on our team, relaying positions to his clanmates in the other team. When I openly said this, 'Ledislav' typed that he was 'telling them' on teamspeak.

They were high scoring, holding key positions through this tactic. Once we forced the Ladislav guy to switch teams...they stopped making frags, and ended up low on the scoring list the next rounds......unsurprising.

I dont quite understand why they are so stupid not to even take a fake account as the 'teller'...but okay.

Case #2 Clan '{VI}'

I join server. I wait for a tank for about 5 minutes. Some bloke steps next to me on the same spot, probably the previous owner of the tank 'claiming' his right. After he is voicemsging 'no no no' all the time, suddenly I get shot down by 'Dappy93' (allready at -8 at that point ?) from his tank. His teammate jumps in the tank that spawns, and they drive off. He said 'oops, my finger slipped' and smiled....

This kind of stuff gets my blood boiling (especially when I've had coffee since me and caffeine is a bad mix  ;D ). This was on the 762 server, and no admins were online. Since I feel that letting griefers getting away with what they do is wrong, I parked my jeep a hand full of times in the front of the teamkiller's tank. Worked a treat, somewhere around -20 the teamkiller said a vague 'sorry now stop'.

Just my €0.02 to create a place where griefers and cheaters get some 'air time', so maybe we as a community get some awareness of these occurances. If admins feel this belongs in off-topic, feel free to move!

Right. I'm not one to complain quickly about in-game stuff. I just test, learn etc.

But the crosshair of the M10 and Firefly *are* bugging me to hell and back. I just cant seem to hit anything with them, the Firefly slightly more so than the M10 for some odd reason.

First of all - it's the only (tank) crosshair in-game that does not have a distinct 'point' but instead a wide, open area. This is akward since they are the only guns on allied side that have very flat projectile trajectory and hence would be ideally suited to a 'pointy' crosshair. I score far better accurac with a silly cromwell and its arched projectile curveh, or even a regular sherman.  Compared to the axis crosshairs I get even more annoyed, since they have the same flat trajectory *with* superb crosshairs that feature exact 'points' (tip of reverse pyramid etc).

I did extensive testing in-game over various ranges and have not managed great accuracy or reproduceability with the Firefly and M10. Especially with the Firefly I have the idea that the 'actual' point of impact is somewhat on the upperleft of the wide crosshair area, not in the centre as you would expect.

------------------

SECOND - And this has no relation to the above, just that I felt annoyed by it for the umphteenth time and did not want to start a second thread for just this. Why does the paper-armored M10 resist panzerfaust shots straight on the ass ? Not even in flames often?

The M10 in reality should blow up instantly, since the engine in the rear is poorly protected. In-game however I have fired numerous panzerfausts from 5-10 meter range on various places on the rearside with often not even flames coming out of the tank and it just backed off.

Yes, I know...you can shoot the driver. But I want the vehicle down, not the driver. Else it will be occupied within a minute by someone else.

What am I doing wrong ? Or what is wrong in the game ?

Suggestions / Whatever happened to 'Sorry' ! :(
« on: 18-03-2010, 16:03:41 »
Yes. This may seem like a small, insignificant posting.

However, the most missed voicecom in BF2:FH2 for me is the 'Sorry!' 'Entschuldigung' etc.
I used it a lot in other multiplayer games - not only can you apologize for mistakes (Teamkilling for example) but it certainly increases imersiveness. You feel a greater bond with someone who says 'SORRY' for doing wrong than just typing it out (which often gets spammed off-screen).

Gameplay/Tacticalwise it also has some advantages:
1) I have been killed many times typing an apology for teamkilling or doing something stupid to my teammates/squadmates around me (driving over them :D). Using voice-com you can apologize but not waste time.

2) Many people dont have a microphone, or have troubles using it in BF2. Besides only squadmates can talk, and teammates also sometimes need or want to say sorry ; ;D

Can we please please pretty please consider implementing 'Sorry!' ?  :-[

p.s. disclaimer : I dont teamkill that often, but I do *GET* teamkilled very often. A quick sorry would save a lot of fustration on my side too ;)
