HelpCopying a DVD box Set to a PC - then onto a External HDD.

Greetings Geeks!  :)

Now I have a complete Deep Space 9 box set that I'd like to eventually get onto an external HDD (I just got a Samsung 2 TB one!)

I have the DVD reader on the PC and I have burnt numerous musik CD's over the years on it using Windows Media Player software.

I have NEVER burnt a DVD though! So I presume I burn the episodes from the DVD first onto my PC HDD then transfer them back to the External HDD.

So, as I'm a complete nub at this! If you have done this before, could you give me a bit of advice?  ;D


As in what FREE programmes are out there to do the burn/transfer. I'd consider purchasing something if it's really good?

And what movie file is best .avi .wmv  .mp4  .m4p Mpeg   etc.........   :o ???


I think the whole set is 700 minutes viewing time. Can all that fit onto 2 TB?  ???

Basically you wanna rip a DVD box set. Ripping is illegal. Most likely the DVD box set got a copy protection. That makes it illegal then. Helping you with this might be illegal as well.

So, your term is to rip, ripped, ripped. Google that.

Such things are illegal and helping such things here on this forum, is forbidden and will be removed. Like for example, when people wanted to see the leaked Game of thrones episodes and people were posting torrents. They get removed

In the Netherlands it is not illegal as long as you own the source. Germany I don't know, where this forum is hosted.
Don't rip anything, but convert it. Search for converter programs. .MKV Output type is just fine.

Thanks for your replies so far chaps!  ;)

I like DS9 so much I have actually purchased to the box set kerching$$! I want to copy the episodes to HDD so I can watch em in future via tablets/PC/Latop etc

I don't trust the longevity of DVD's! I have music Cd's a few years old and the bloomin foil inside em is degrading  >:( + they scratch and you can get jam and ketchup etc on em  :D

So being the case that I stumped up for the official product, I should be able to make a digital copy for personal use?  ( I haven't actually tried yet, don't know if they're copy protected etc  ??? )

Trying to get them into mp4 format would be a good start yes? I'll check out www.makemkv.com  thanks!  :)
