Now that a larger state has approved it, maybe more of the country will follow.

I am ashamed of my state for not doing this. I think that may be why my uncle moved to Chicago.
-
Another little step to true freedom. :)
-
It's a bit strange isn't it, in 2001 the first nation allowed this.. Madness. 21st Century..
-
Unbelievable. The end of humanity continues............
Look im all for the "For each his own" and "as long as they dont recruit me, i dont care" slogans.....
But to think this is a positive step in the direction of a 21 Century family unit is preposterous....
Whats next........Man/Dog marriages...............
::)
-
What do you care if some guy you don't know marries some other guy you don't know? It does not affect you in any way at all.
-
You have to see hte big picture lightning. Thousands of secretly gay family fathers will now desert their families in an attempt to marry Vin Diesel.
-
i personally dont care. not my cup of tea, but i see it this way: more gay people (except lesbians, but ive heard there are more gay men than women) = less concurrence on the women-market. so if they want to merry, let them.
what does it give them next to some respect? does it improve their tax-rates?
and out of curiosity: are they allowed to adopt children (in the USA and elsewhere)?
-

Dingding! Marriages should be nothing more then a religious ceremony.
Rights etc. that come with partnerships should be a separate debate altogether.

Which is why the state shouldn't recognize religious rituals as law.
-
I look at like, there's one less man in between me and that hot girl. :-*
In my experience the hot girls chase after the gay guys then get all disappointed when they find out they are gay, then they do the same thing all over again.
All of you saying marriages shouldn't be recognized by the government, only by religious groups: Read about Israeli marriage law. That's how things work in Israel, with each religion having its own marriage laws and it is a giant screw-up. Most religious groups won't marry couples where the husband and wife have different religions. Atheists and agnostics cannot legally get married in Israel. Only Orthodox rabbis can officiate Jewish weddings and they have different rules than other sects of Judaism which those other sects nonetheless have to follow. Only 9 Christian churches can recognize marriages, problem is there are a lot more Christian denominations than that. Divorce is also handled by the courts, and some religions do not allow divorce while Islam for example practices Sharia law.
What this means in practice is like 10% of the Israeli population gets married overseas, then goes back to Israel where foreign marriages are legally recognized.
IMO, it is best for governments to recognize a "baseline" civil marriage and then religious organizations can add their own rules to that, and following those rules is up to the individual conscience of the people involved.

That´s how it works in Germany and some other European countries, such as France, Switzerland or Russia.
No churchy marriage is officially legal until there has been a civil marriage. If you want to marry in a church it´s just some personal "bonus", but not necesessary. It works quite well because people who aren´t into any religion or whose marriage would be a "sin" in the eyes of some church, like gay couples, can still be officially married and have the same benefits as a classical man-woman-marriage.

Anything that has something to do with legislation, human rights or general well being and private life of people should not be regulated by bronze-age mythology.
Too bad even on these forums there are people whose main purpose in life seems to fear, persecute and hate someone because of just that. Bronze-age mythology. ::)
-
In front of the law two gays are strangers. Once they marry, they're considered each others closest relative, which would be otherwise their siblings or parents. That will simplify legal aspects from health care over administrative aspects to inheritance.
-
And also dispute settlement on divorce.

Same thing in Indonesia. People have to be in the same religion to be married. So they went to Singapore or Australia to do just that.

This is how it works in the USA, except that each state sets its own marriage laws instead of one national law. Hence each state has different rules for gay marriage/civil unions/waiting periods/age of consent/testing requirements/divorce laws/alienation of affection laws and so on.
We also have religious organizations that perform marriages that would otherwise be illegal. Of course, these marriages don't count for anything legally. But churches that support gay marriage will sometimes hold gay marriage ceremonies even if the couple couldn't get a civil marriage.
The same thing happens with Mormon polygamists...only one of their marriages is legally recognized and all the other wives are only recognized by their church. On the other hand the act of having two civil marriages at once=bigamy which is a crime, and many of these Mormon groups also married underage girls to creepy old dudes and as a result a number of their leaders are currently in jail for pedophilia and child sex trafficking.
-
But once they married outside the state that does not recognize gay marriage, they are still legal when they return, right?
-

Nope, since that marriage is not recognized by the other state.

Heh. Heheh.
I'm all for homosexual marriage. If they want to get game over like heterosexual couples, go for it o/

Thanks for the explanation!
It´s a bit odd that state law is more important in this matter than federal law. Marriage (between two consent persons who are full age, no matter of their sex) is a pretty basic human right, I think, that should be a federal matter, like all basic rights, such as freedom of oppinion etc. and should be in effect in all states.

Do yourself a favour, take your rings to Mordor! .... oh wait, that's not a gay joke btw!

That is sad. How can they nullify someone's marriage like that? Or is it just the benefits of married couples that they take out from married gays?
Marriage between people of different religion conducted in other country is still considered legal. However, they cannot legally divorce here.

It's cool, if two people love each other, let them make that commitment - to not cheat. I've yet to hear about a gay divorce so good for them. Kids are probably better off.
Mental note: Do not utter latter part near feminists, unless it gets them into a fight with lesbian couples ;D

I wonder how many of these "OMG GAYS KILL IT WITH FIRE"-guys still get huge amounts of enjoyment out of girl-on-girl action :P

I don't think marriage has anything to do with that. Some people who like sex might not like marriage :P.

Good for them. I yet to have to live long enough to see that in Poland, not to mention gay couples ability of adoption (difficult subject). People are so homophobic here it's sad. I blame it on general lack of good education system and mass kiliing of polish higher class since 1772.
Also the gay representatives don't do a good job here either. They way they shove their sexuality in the face is sometimes worse than that of religious fanatics. Colorful parades with strangely dressed or half naked people do the oposite result. Instead of showing how normal and with just different sexual orientation they are, they do everything to stand out - in a bad way. This is a no go in a closed minded society. They need to get their shit together if they want to make thair life better here - don't count on media's help since it will show only what's controversial.

True, Gay Parade's have the opposite effect. I grant everyone his bit of freedom but I seriously dislike those Parade's, I don't hate any gay person for it, not at all. Well I do hate some gays but not because they are gay.
But why walk around half naked with bad music. Why?! I want a Straight Parade.
-
Coincidentally, the first gay liberation march (now called gay pride parade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_parade)) was 41 years ago today, itself on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots) of 1969 a year earlier.
So... Happy gayday everybody?

Haha, I saw this today on The Onion: Gay-Pride Parade Sets Mainstream Acceptance Of Gays Back 50 Years (http://www.theonion.com/articles/gaypride-parade-sets-mainstream-acceptance-of-gays,351/).

You haven't been to that many parades eh? i went to the minneapolis pride parade on sunday, which is the 3rd largest in the US. and most of the floats were about acceptance and were churches promoting equality, and floats with plays on them and what not. There was even one sponsored by Jagermeister which had a bunch of girls in thongs grinding on eachother. There was literally only one instance of a guy in tiny underwear.

I have seen plenty of pictures of Dutch gay parades. It's quite different.

Here I am, a bisexual, and I'm fully agreeing with yah Fuchs...most gay pride parades I've seen are honestly exactly as that onion article describes. Essentially, the history behind them was that, as a way of lashing out, they were created and involved all those highly suggestive...and sexual...and just plain weird acts. However, that was in the 1970s...its pointless now, and just makes people think all gay people are weird perverts....

Anyway, what kind of strange parades you got over there wherever? Around here is usually all cool and chilled out, children and grandparents alike have good time there. Ministers and politicians give speeches, there's music and so forth. Sure, occasional leather-men and blokes almost straight from a Top of Finland drawing are present too but who gives a shit.
There are dozens of way stranger festivals happenings and gatherings every summer only in Finland, so I don't really see why someone should get so worked up because of Pride.

In here, gay people (especially males) are identical with aggression because of "Ryan the Jombang butcher", a homosexual who killed 11 men that refused to have relationship with him.
People are sometimes forced into drastic situations due to their situated environment. Since gays are excluded from the society, they resort to extreme measures to vent out their frustration. In a more open society like urban environment, weird cases involving people with certain sexual orientation rarely occurred. That "buthcer guy" came from rural area renowned for its strict religious tradition.
Many gay people I know are normal people, some do have insecure feeling, like asking "do you feel awkward standing next to me?" too many times. Honestly, I don't care. Many of them wanted to marry in some "beautiful church building", while the institution who runs the church rejects them. Well, it is not like only gay people get rejected from the church, but many people, including people 'okay people' that the priest/reverend/pastor just don't like.
With so many random modern-day literal-bible translation church very popular in the US spawning presidential candidates and political leaders recently, and with those bible-for-all-and-especially-for-popular-American-conservative-anecdotes self-calling pundits, gay people better stay away. Since gay people issues are instantly labelled liberal propaganda, no matter what their political views actually are. This is exactly why I dislike being conservatives (by US definition) although I'm not liberal either. It is very pathetic that people still judge other people entirely from their sexual orientation only.
