Building Defences
« on: 02-04-2009, 19:04:49 »
Hello,

A future game mode could include a defence building feature. I think it would have to be a separate mode so as to retain the carefully balanced FH mod as it is.

Tank defences. Bunkers. Trenches, although those would have to build above the level of the map. I don't think that can be altered. Sandbags. Artillery. Machine guns.  So gameplay would depend a lot on defence building skills. It's tempting to think of the engineers going all out and building bridges and small forts, but I'm not sure how much the BF2 engine can handle, with online as well.

It would be another way of thinking strategically.

It may be unrealistic but perhaps on some maps there could be a kit armed with just a handgun, and a deployable wall of sandbags, roll of barbed wire, and some other goodies?

Yes, smaller sounds better. I always blow things up to an absurdly large scale  ::)

A kit with just a handgun and sandbag emplaced machine gun position(.50CAL or MG42) would be cool though

But yes, somebody played PR..

That would be awesome though to have deployable Machine gun bunkers. You run up to an enemy soldier and deploy it right on top of em

Yea... I like the sound of that.

I don't think you'd get close enough to dump assets on top of the enemy. Although the making it smaller idea would fit very well into current FH, I was really thinking of another branch of FH. I think the comparisons to "he liked PR" are unfair. I would never want to make FH like PR ! I just never realised it was even possible to build in BF like that :)

Even though I have no idea how something like this would be integrated into a faster paced game like FH2 I do love the concept.  Adds a whole new strategic level to the game and makes it just a little less about "OMG I got mad CS skills!" and a little more about team work.

Imho, bunkers and similar heavy stuff is too much, but placing wire sounds interesting.

An idea:
Player would pick the wire "weapon", click Fire (LMB) to place the point A, and then move around to define the point B. Press Fire again to settle the wire. Wire would dynamically change it's length and angle between the point A and the player in realtime (by adding or removing short wire objects between player and the point A) until he settles it, unless player gets too far from the point A (spend all "ammo") when the A point would start to move towards you leaving length of wire constant. "Ammo" would be defined by how many wire objects you have (They could be 1-2m long) so therefore you could have 10-15m of wire. Only when the wire gets settled you lose "ammo".

You can place it in portions. For example place 7 meters on one place and 3 on another place.

The same kit should have an ability to "cut" wire. Cutting would delete a single wire object and raise player's ammo by 1. It would be represented by pincers "weapon" and done by "firing" it. Similar to wrench.

Engineers should also have pincers and the ability to cut wire but not carrying it. The "Wire kit" should be unique, and found in bases.

Don't take this seriously though, I'm not aware how much time would this require to implement or is it possible, but it's a quick suggestion.

I would love that idea. It would also spare the devs from putting barbed wire on the maps. Players could do it on the spot. It would really improve things.

+1 if it is possible.

By buggy, do you mean defences sometimes appearing too high off the ground with a hump underneath them ?
