They are a Marder III M and a swedish Sav M/43, a swedish self propelled gun.

At least that vehicle has a licensed 38t-chassis. So you can at least imagine that its supposed to be a Marder or Hetzer (which wasn´t used in Normandy). That´s better than those stupid mock-up Tigers. I think it´s always a pity when fake tanks are used in WW2 movies. Why can´t they just lend a tank from a museum (Bovington, Münster etc. have a running Tiger or Panzer IV). I mean Steven Spielberg directed the movie so there should have been enough money available to compensate for the temporarily loss of the vehicles. Also it´s the best form for advertising and attracting new visitors.

Sure those are old Tanks, but is there really something that could totally break and not being fixed? saving Private Ryan was partly mad in Ireland so the transport should have also been possible. But obviously money was more important than making an authentic movie. The broad audience wouldn´t get the difference I assume.

If I just had some million dollars. I would rebuild all lost WW2 tanks :).

the blowing off the track of the tiger in the movie? during filming the track WAS blowed off

Do you want that Tiger 131 gets his super rare track BLOWN off?

Then you don´t have to blow up the tracks. Even in 1998, when SPR was made there were adequate computer effects available. I would prefer this combination (Real tank, fake explosion) over this fake tin can and a real explosion.

I'm not entirely sure the Bovington Tiger was running yet when SPR was made.  Anyhow, like theta says, it is a practically one off artefact - not the sort of thing you want to be using theatrical pyrotechnics on.

Couldn't you just cgi them these days? I think the japanese tanks int he pacific might ahve been cgi.

What's the big deal. It was an excellent replica and it looked solid. You wouldn't have got them looking that solid in 1998 in pure CGI.

Look at CGI-fests like tranformers and Clash of the titans. see how thing their CGI look and that's 2009 and such.

Only hardcore geeks will freeze frames and totally consider something fake for a minor detail like tracks.

I personall prefered the fact that it was real.

Tracks and "wheels", size, the whole hull, the vision slit, the place of the turret (in SPR its to far to the front) and the general shape of the hull are different. I watched the movie first when i was 10 and I could tell the thing wasn´t real. You don´t need to freeze the frame to spot that.  :-X

It is complete even up to the armour thickness
And there only goal is to find a proper gasoline engine to match the sound of the maybach
Currently they use a 300 HP Gasoline engine from a MT-LB

well a bit, but if those russians can make a perfect looking replica like that in there spare time, Then Hollywood magnets with big budgets can do that aswel. No need to take tiger 131 and give her a taste of pyrotechnics :)

That Tiger I is a little inaccurate ... looks to be a middle version , they was without that smoke charges on sides of turret ...
