Community Polls / Re: Fh2 addition SW

You need a project leader who can put in the time to pull off a miracle, you've got to find that first. Then you get your developers together, those are hard to find because everyone who can help more than likely already is on one mod or another; keep selection to simply having people show they can actually model or animate or whatever. Get community support behind it, raise money through that and distribute upon first release back to the developers. Because let's be honest here, unless you have a proper amount of interest and motivation to finish what is started it will end up like so many other Battlefield 2 mods which are started every year: dead, all because someone decided to sleep in one day, then realized how fucking monumental of a task it is and for what? Release date 2025, for the sake of a few dozen people to play for a few weeks and that's it.

It would be easier to start a brand new game and go from there, that will solve so many problems, whether it's interest or development.

I haven't played in over 2 years so I'm not the best person for that. Totally could but I'm not interested.

You're the public, so if you want it then you can organize it. My advice is to figure out the resources you'll need, get them first, then worry about the rest of the details, and put out plenty of announcements at least 3-4 weeks in advance. I'd actually recommend letting people know about it word of mouth these days over traditional advertising.

FH2 Help / Support / Re: SERVER TUTORIAL OR DOCUMENTATION
« on: 26-09-2019, 00:09:49 »
You should refer to all documentation that comes with BF2 or whichever 3rd party server client you're using. FH2, as far as I understand, doesn't make the server software, but in the context of that getting a basic server setup whether Windows or Linux is straightforward as you typically just put the mod and the maps into the server rotation.

I have wanted this for years! Actually, I was tired of the spotting system entirely because too often you would have nobody calling for strikes or they wouldn't be that great, and cloud spotting while you could memorize your favorite targets and where to aim at for them, it's too tedious. But my reasons for wanting it are slightly different because back in the day I worked out how to aim artillery at any spot on the map once you knew your range to target and angle of the barrel, plus familiarity with the gun itself. Slow as hell, needed a calculator on hand. Once you had it all figured out it was much easier to memorize azimuth and inclination than a visual landmark on your screen.

tl;dr
I don't think it's a good idea, because I'd abuse the hell out of it. Not only that it's way too much of an edge for more practiced players to have over others.

Community Polls / Re: Do we need more Africa maps?
« on: 23-06-2019, 09:06:26 »
First of all, you guys are replying to a 2 years old topic, and I can assure you that no one is working on any African maps at the moment.

I'd like to see overhauls of existing Africa maps instead of new ones. Some really need some work on the looks and gameplay.
People keep saying that, but in the end it is nothing more but complaining, since no one ever bothers to even elaborate what do they mean by that. Improve the gameplay? Sure, that's technically easier than visual updates due to nature of how mapping in BF2 engine works (for example moving even one static will completely break the singleplayer layer that will have to be redone from scratch after each visual update).

There plenty of room for the gameplay improvements though, but what exactly, where and why should be changed? Explain in details, and we can talk.

Good old Jan, being a condescending dickhead for nearly a decade who'd no doubt give a wordy response to being called out on it. He should really make a change so that he's not perceived with such a douche attitude because honestly he's probably an okay person and doesn't mean to chase people off with his seemingly unpleasant demeanor.

How is that for an explanation for a improvement to be made, or do you need something of a higher caliber?

You're better off searching rather than asking because my memory is very bad.

Are you installing just the mod to an existing Linux server or are you trying to install both the BF2 Linux server and the mod for it? If it is just FH2 you are installing, then you just need to install FH2 to the mods folder, and then you need to change the .con files for the server to start that mod, and include the maps in the map list, and then you just run your ./start.sh like you normally would. The server monitor window might not show up when you start but there should be a command for that in case it doesn't.

Personally I think Windows is better for BF2 dedicated hosting because of the greater variety of already modified executables for it that fix the master server list, and change things like max player count, etc. But also because if you want any other person to have remote access to the host machine it's not as steep of a learning curve.

General Discussion / Re: BF1942 way more populated?
« on: 24-11-2018, 08:11:01 »
Unmodded BF1942 is still the most popular. FH1/FHSW servers might hit up to 100 on the Japanese servers and 20-60 on the Euro servers depending on time and day of the week. Check between 1800-2100 UTC on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays.

To add to that controversy regarding women being overly portrayed - they've asians fighting for the Allies. In a time period where America, being racist shitheads back then and fearing collaborators should the coast be invaded, bagged and tagged over 100,000 Japanese-Americans and migrants and sent them to camps or relocated them further east. Even the politicians at the time flat out said they didn't like or want them. It happened not only there but Canada too, and elsewhere. But no, that's a shame that is being swept under the rug because the developers think it's minor and not at all important.

I really want to give the game a chance because there's few things I like, but it fails so hard. They expect a release date by late November? Impossible. I had to stop playing earlier because I glitched so hard that I was revived, only it turns out the game was slow in determining that I shouldn't have been (critical death, think of a double tap) allowed to be, killed me after I walked a few steps, and then I couldn't spawn again, stuck at the map overview. Not only that but many of the icons were lost, grayed out or blank, the exception being allied soldiers.

It's so physical. Going prone feels like I'm slow, heavy, weighed down with gear and everything. But the deaths are out of control, for perspective even BF2/FH2 does it better. Hell even BF1942 does it better, it's broken as all hell.

I feel like some of the combat is at longer ranges than in BF1 or BF4, and it's good, it's nice. Setting up a machine gun on the 3rd floor of building and firing down at a dozen guys slowly crossing a bridge, great. The maps aren't necessarily bigger, but it feels like there's way more angles to fight from. That said, I think there were a lot of areas that weren't meant to be accessible but you could glitch your way to them one way or another.

Back to squads, yes apparently it does seem you have no choice but to be in one. You can make a new squad if there's space for it and set it to private, you can bet there'll be a lot of people doing that. But in addition your squad leaders can actually be demoted for not giving orders. If you request orders, and they don't set a new target, a new leader will be set. Or so it seems. But also you can get a squad leader radio, call in V-1 strikes, air drops, etc, if you have enough points for it.

Lots of recycled material. I've been in houses that are pulled straight from BFBC2. I just don't know yet, it's got something to it that's calling me back, but it's so rough that I don't have much hope for it. Has DICE put together their most bold, untried features imaginable to see if it's popular or not, is this game a sacrifice for them to learn from, I don't know? It wants you to hate it! I got killed by a tank because it was invisible - only the mid air floating passengers and the vehicle hit score let me know it was there. And there have been games where I only ever spawn with a pistol. It's garbage. Full release in two and half months? Yeah right.

How have they managed to fuck this up so badly? How do I even begin...

They can't get ragdolls right apparently because I've seen so many glitchy bodies, some of them not even on the ground but stuck mid air. Sounds are garbage, I can't even tell there's a war on it's so quiet.

The scarcity of ammo is kind of nice if not for the interactable stacks you need to top off at every so often. Those are going to get camped so hard.

It's obviously not meant for my now low end system and poor monitor, the colors are all over the damn place, Rotterdam is so bright it reminds me of an acid trip.

So much recycling. Animations, buildings, UI. Whatever they have new on that front is pretty rough, UI is confusing as all hell it took me a while to find the old fashioned server browser.

Forced to be in a squad when you join. I don't think you can even leave it, you can bounce between and maybe start a new one but I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. And of course you can spawn on anyone in your squad.

Spotting seems different. No more spamming Q. Good, bad, I don't know. I mean they're adding some nice features but... they can't shine. Not yet. Maybe a year from now. Holy shit. I can't even open a door. I have no choice but to bust through rather than quietly giving it a push.

Time to kill is interesting. Snipers kind of suck unless you're great at it, which is good I guess? Support has LMGs and shotguns, as it should be. Assaults aren't forced to have automatic weapon loadouts they can also use semi auto rifles it seems, same with Medic.

Someone told me that the suppression would blur the screen to a great degree, no. Once again I care little about how dangerous being in the open is, I feel that there's no consequence of dying whatsoever.

Unless my mind is changed I'll only get it if it's on sale, over a year from now when I can run it better.

Community Polls / Re: Transports showing in mini-map

It's a problem but I don't think that there's a middle ground solution to it, even in the latest Battlefield games empty vehicles still appear on the map.

In BF1942, BF2, all the time I remember checking the map to see what vehicles were open for taking in the enemy's spawn and whatever was missing would tell you what the enemy was fielding and what you had to prepare to counter or evade. Any time a flag is captured and vehicles spawn you check to see if anything disappears to get an idea of how fast they're moving. It's not a big deal when you have a server of 50+ people since it's much harder to keep track of but even then you can at least pay attention to what is only a few meters away from you, so you'd have a few seconds of warning if you had an attack coming from a vehicle. And that's why I always drowned my jeeps in a lake or something if possible, or went the longest way possible on foot. In the tournaments, it didn't happen that often but it was a tactic to have one person remain inside the vehicle for several seconds after everyone gets out, or to drive it elsewhere.

In my opinion the map shouldn't even be visible and only accessible after a considerable delay and even then should never relay the position of any person or vehicle, not even yourself. That's the extreme option, I like it because it makes everyone a bit more cautious about their surroundings and needs an even more heightened awareness as to what is going on, be it sounds or flocks of birds. Of the latter I don't remember if that's still in FH2 but honestly it should be removed, but that's a topic for another time.

The alternative to that is adjust the range that empty vehicles begin to appear on the map to something really short. I have no idea how that is achieved and if it's possible to do without changing the range for every single thing.

It's like Battlefield 1 all over again where a considerable fraction of the German army was composed of black guys. Was that seriously a prosthetic? It's almost as if there's a subtle message around every corner of hopefully optimistic horse shit. Society in times past was uglier than today but if people want to portray something based in history as grander than it was so be it, it's not my concern anymore.

I can say as much as I disagree with it as I want I'm still going to buy it anyway. Throwing ammo bags backwards as you run? Sold.
