Off-Topic / Need some help with 3rd year university project.
« on: 22-11-2009, 13:11:50 »
Hello folks.

As part of my 3rd year product design university course, I'm looking into the issues surrounding physical gaming.

To put it simple, I'm investigating the interaction between the user and the console controller, specifically looking at RSI and other conditions brought on by overuse or general discomfort that may be due to the design and ergonomics of today's modern video games console controllers.

Now, I'm sure most of you are predominantly PC gamers, but I'm sure some of you spend some time on a console or even use a console controller (such as the 360 wired controller) for certain games on the PC.

As part of my primary research and development, I've decided to conduct a survey - seven simple yes or no questions. It doesn't require a login, email or anything like that. Should take 20 seconds tops, but it'll go a long way to helping me develop my research into a design concept or design proposal. All results will remain anonymous and no personal information is collected.

I may be redesigning the console controller, I may be doing something completely different to tackle the problem, but it is primarily this research that will determine my next logical step concerning the issue.

So folks. I'll leave it to you. I do really need as many replies as possible, but every single one counts.

Thanks in advance, I'm really appreciative of your time.

Off-Topic / Looking for a new monitor.
« on: 30-04-2009, 10:04:11 »
Uni's coming to an end, and after having put up with a 19'' 16:10 1440x900 widescreen I've come to understand that I could really benefit from a 22'' or 24'' widescreen, particularly due to the fact that most of my presentation boards that I work on are in A3 format. It helps to get everything on the screen at once, and no doubt it will come in handy for SolidWorks and Illustrator too. Seems to me like a good time to get an upgrade, before I go into my 3rd year (I intend to take some drawing/illustration/layout courses/exercises over the summer, so this welcome space of a few days off seems to be the best time to look around).

I will, obviously, be using this monitor to play games...I can't live without me gamin'. I love widescreen, 16:10 or 16:9 (16:10 ideally). Which is why DICE's terrible WS support pisses me off so much.

Idealistically I'd like to go for a 24'', and I don't mind spending the extra cash to stretch it.

I'm looking to spend around £200, but I don't mind going close to £250. It may seem like a tight budget, bare in mind I am a student, but it is possible. I'm not after all sorts of features, just a good aspect ratio, resolution, decent response time, refresh rate and contrast ratio. I don't suppose it'd be too much to ask for a HDMI port, either, but this is secondary and not a major prioritory.

I have had a look around, and this is what I've come up with so far.

Bare in mind I currently have an Asus 19'' 16:10 widescreen running 1440x900 (max resolution), and I think 5ms response time. While it does the job, I just need the extra space. It is a good quality monitor, however.

Oh, and it has to be a flatscreen. I've got the monitor backed up to a wall on my desk and it's not that wide. I'm not bothered about viewing angle...the downside of my current Asus is that the viewing angle isn't great, but passable, so I would put up with anything. Amount of ports isn't a worry. I've enough USB on my PC, sound goes through my X-Fi into a headset via the back of my PC, so I only end up using the power and one video output. Like I said though, HDMI would be welcomed.

Any help or recommendations would be a help, folks. So thanks.

...Anyone else get a key? I found one this morning in my inbox. Never thought I'd have a chance of getting hold of one, but they seemed to have just released a massive batch.

I'm gonna download it and give it a go. My first character is 'Protagonist20'.
