Random Freezes
« on: 21-02-2011, 16:02:25 »
When I play FH2 (and some other games) my computer sometimes freezes.  I can do nothing, no input is responded to until after the freeze ends.  The freezing itself lasts anywhere between 10-40 seconds; during this period, the game continues and my character still moves in the same way I was before it froze.  The sound still plays or loops.  This happens regardless of the video settings.  Any help would be appreciated.

Open your taskmanager, switch to the performance tab and keep it running while playing FH2. When one of the spikes occurs switch back to the taskmananger and look which from the usual suspects is the culprti. CPU or memory.
If it's neither you can do some more difficults troubleshooting.

Some general tips:

- Make sure your PC is not overheated. Same goes for your videocard. So clean it, check the fans, etc.
- Don't run to much crap while playing. Background processes
- Maybe you have a trojan or virus. Do a check.

Go onto your Motherboard + graphics card program. E.g. mine is Fox One:

Here it will tell you the temperature and other statistics e.g. overclocking etc. Make sure that the temperature is under 30' C, if not you have a few options.

1. Take the side off your PC for better airflow
2. Buy and install another fan
3. Turn the overclock (if any) down

Those are just a few options... Hope this helps :D

Where can I get something like this compatible with NDVIDIA and Windows Vista?

...Make sure that the temperature is under 30' C...
When it's idling...under load, it'll get a lot hotter than that... :)

Try Hardware Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Leave it open in the background while you play FH2 or whatever, after it freezes (or an hour), check the Max column. It'll show you the maximum temperature reached by the CPU, GFX card, and System (aka the chipset on your mobo).

Idle

After FH2 froze, while still running FH2.

What does this tell you?

This could also be a problem with your latency. How are you connected to the net? WLAN or cable based LAN?

Nothing wrong with your temps, but it doesn't tell me how much of your memory and cpu power is consumed.

40 degrees seems a bit high for idle, but it's not getting much hotter. Definitely not the cause of the problem though.

One thing that is rather odd is the VCORE, I don't understand why it's so high. That CPU's voltage rating is 1.2-1.25V... :-\

Are the freezes random or do they happen after a certain amount of time?

And does it happen when you play any game or is it only when your playing online?

Kinda depends on the game, like on the Source engine:  No freezes or lag at all.  I played an hour-long round of Fall of Tobruk with no freezes, but it started freezing within minutes of a map change to Cobra.

This could also be a problem with your latency. How are you connected to the net? WLAN or cable based LAN?

Cable internet, with a Wireless network.

Performance while idle, listening to some music.

Performance during FH2 is running, including a dip where it froze.

There's a lot of processes running in the background, e.g. at idle I have less than 45.

What's running in the background?

What's happening on the Networking tab when it freezes?

(Note: you have to open it before it'll monitor the network connections.)

Do a search on core affinity and battlefield 2. Also search on cool 'n quite and battlefield 2.
Your CPU and memory is sufficient for running FH2. You do have a relative high amount of processes compared to mine and Cannonfodder, try to cut back some superflous ones.
As Cannonfodder advies check your network monitor while playing. A
And last tip compare singleplayer gameplay with multiplayer gameplay and check if there any differences., this might hint to network issues.

Your problem right there. BF2 is very packet heavy and very susceptible to packet loss and thus having a WLAN will cause your freezes and random lags!

I concur. Was playing with wireless yesterday and flying becomes a hazardous occupation. Aiming also becomes difficult.
