Title: Gamespy shutdown May 31, 2014
Post by: bjack on 04-04-2014, 04:04:21
http://www.poweredbygamespy.com/pricing/

Gamespy is shutting down everything on May 31.  This is going to effect every Battlefield game except BF3 and later.  This includes the master server browser and online login services for BF2.

GameSpy is used for login accounts, server browser and CD Key verification.

Perhaps the FH2 Devs could build their own server browser in to the client....

 Now, they will have to......

So i say this needs to be addressed BEFORE the next patch is released.

Please tell me they are aware of this and have a solution

from the PR forums (by PR:BF2 Project manager):

Quote
No, it means you won't be able to play PR in its current state, as PRLauncher requires you to log in using an online account before you can join an online server (whether it's through the server browser, or through Join by IP). Most you'd be able to do is use an offline account to play against some bots.

It's not the end of the world though, the servers can be reverse engineered easy enough, and things adjusted to work to get everyone playing, but certain functionality may be lost.

Also no offence to whatever moderator, but seeing how this has direct implications on FH2, it shouldn't be moved to the abyss that is the offtopic-gaming section where few dare to venture, but stay in general discussion where it can be noticed easier...

Yeah, I'd REALLY like to hear how this would not have a HUGE impact on FH2.

This really does belong to FH2 General instead of Gaming.

There we go.

When players sent a reminder of the shortcomings of the login system, EA/Dice stated that support for BF2 would be nothing to worry about.

Only nine years later, it is over now. Now you know the half-life of games these days.

Still, I was surprised to hear about gamespy. The software was totally cluttered and annoying to use. It was the Yahoo of game browsers.

I wonder if this move will drag players away from mods like FH2 or if it will bring players as it keeps BF2 alive in a way, while most of the vBF2 online community will be dead. I assume some people can fix their dedicated servers like FH2 is able to do as well, so there still might be the one or other vBF2 server for interested people. But after all vBF2 will be pretty much dead, so the influx of new players to the game will probably very low. I just wonder if mods like PR and FH2 as last enclaves of BF2 communities running servers will become more popular as a result. Or if possibly everything will just stay the same. I find it hard to estimate the magnitude and the consequences the shutdown has for FH2.

Well this is grave news indeed... My prediction is that it will cause a HUGE drop off in player numbers for a period, as people will be forced to play something else, but then when the news get out about fixed servers people will slowly be coming back to the game and especially the mods... It happened with Freelancer, it will happen with this too... But a spike in influx of new players we probably won't see...

Time to start thinking about  FH3? :P

A custom login would mean FH2 essentially becomes free to play (no cd key checks etc. anymore without gamespy), so that means more players?

Awww. I kinda miss those days when something really unexpected could happen, like a UAV appearing in the skies of Sidi Rezegh, crashing the server shortly thereafter.

You can all chillax. Spitfire is looking into it and apparently already knows what to do. I'd imagine we will roll out the solution before servers go even down. Worst case scenario: You need to make a new profile and lose your 762 stats.
Title: Re: Gamespy shutdown May 31, 2014
Post by: fh_spitfire on 04-04-2014, 15:04:58
keep calm everyone, we will definitely release technical update before gamespy servers go down. ATM it looks like awards/stats wipe will occur, as there is no safe way to preserve gamespy PID (Player ID) into new database, but it is all case to change yet.

@Moderators: move this to general discussion maybe?

I don't see why 762 couldn't upgrade to the newer official awards system if player stats are wiped anyway... but who knows what they'll come up with.

I don't mind the different stats systems anymore. Everything in multiplayer is currently running on 762 anyway and they will of course try to keep it alive and that's okay. What I mean is that I want to use one account for everything and not two seperate kind of account systems for different server setups. When the accounts are not bound to a specific ranking anyway, everything is fine.

Honestly, being the casual gamer that I am, I have no idea what gamespy does (or did) :-[ afaik it plays a large part in stopping cheaters right? ???

Stats wipe is whatever, I stopped following when it got split into different groups anyway. :P

However, I do trust spit when he says he has a solution :) so that's great news. And good news that PR has a solution too. Hopefully all the BF2 modders out there can work together to keep the MP portions of these mods going so people can still have fun.
Even so, I'm sure there are some hax0rs out there who have found a few work arounds to this to keep playing vanilla BF2. (afaik its still played fairly regularly)
Title: Re: Gamespy shutdown May 31, 2014

Gamespy is responsible for the server browser finding servers and checking CD-key and checking that both CD-key and PID are active only from one IP at a time.

Punkbuster is actually the component that actively prevents cheating, but the above works as a "passive" protection too because wannabe hackers have needed to at least sacrifice a CD-key for permaban and still cannot derp too much (running two clients from same IP but on different teams, one to spy on the other team, etc.).

We can't post anything yet. Because, a: We don't have anything ready and tested yet. We do have a few ideas and solutions though. b: We will reach out to the other Bf2 modders/mods and try to find a broad solution rather than everyone finds their own solution. And c: Perhaps EA will make some sort of statement about this at some point soon.

There's still time to go until this happens, and we will get back to you on the issue once we got all the details we need. Fh2 will remain.

Actually if anything this will probably rid us of Origin, BF2 is already CD-free... and now we won't even be using EA servers, so technically all of the mods and stuff are going to be entirely self sufficient... which I think is kindof a positive thing =P

Since when does PR need Origin?

@Bluedrake: How would that solve it? That being said, we have contacted PR to sleuth out a solution together.

Lol it wouldn't, I just daydream about FH2 to PR ports all the time =P being as it is my primary game of choice. I just like the PR gameplay, but all the FH2 content is super high quality... I just want it all D=

I'm happy you guys are working together on a solution though, I'm confident we'll make it work.

Title: Re: Gamespy shutdown May 31, 2014

We just have to accept that FH2 and PR are 2 very different mods. While FH2 focuses on historical accuracy at the expense of teamwork-minded gameplay (not to say that teamwork is not one of the core principles of FH2 but you can play it completely without it), PR loses a bit of its "reality" to make the gameplay more teamwork-oriented.

That said, I like both, PR for it's slow, tactical paced approach, and FH2 for the epic chaos that unfolds every round. Both have their flaws, of course, but merging them wouldn't guarantee they will be fixed, in fact it might make everything worse...

However, I do believe FH2 could use some more teamwork encouragement, be it by integrating Mumble or changing a few gameplay aspects and opening up some maps to be less meat-grinders and give more choice to the players. Only time will tell how both mods will evolve.

Yeah, i hated when that happened. At least Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 were not effected by having gamespy shut down their servers, nowadays all you gotta do is use Direct Connect in those two games. But it wasnt the same with Hidden & Dangerous 2, it had quite a stable, though small, multiplayer and now its completely dead last i checked.

Howdy all!

I'm kind of new to Forgotten Hope 2, but have been active playing Battlefield 2: Project Reality since a lost friend of mine: ArCo[NL] introduced me to Battlefield 1942: Apostles of Midway and Project Reality (v0.6) back in 2007 when I was nicknamed M9A2.

I signed up on the forums because of the latest news regarding the shutdown of GameSpy's authentication servers and to show my unquestionable support and respect towards the whole Battlefield 2 modding community, but from what I've read on several internet forums and comment sections, is that there's nothing to be worried about, people have suggested GameSpy server emulators, game/mod specific accounts and EA deciding to host the service themselves (highly unlikely) or what have you?

Can't wait to play Forgotten Hope 2.46 this Friday!

Kind Regards

People don't like their credit card information being spied on as a prerequisite to playing games. Among other things.

I have Origin version of BF1942 and they dont have any kind have personal information about me.

Fake email and im playing the game.

Program is only limited to run whenever i play BF42 thats it and there is no "probing software assigned to it". Its very easy to control that. Conspiracy theory down the drain.

Credit card information ? Good joke.   ;D

Its ridiculous that people believe whatever they read on gaming forums.

If it is a gamer saying that they will have a "keylooger" or some sort of probe program and they see whatever you do,  you believe it....  that its kind of sad really.

The EULA states that you agree that they do that stuff. So:
a) they do it already and you don't detect it
b) they can update origin anytime so that it actually does that

So: no thanks to Origin

Why would Origin be required?  Why can't we just enter the server IP directly for connection?

Or is it because BF2 requires log-in?  I don't see the FH2 launcher requiring any sort of log-in process.

At any rate, BF1942 has no log-in at all, so I can't see that being a problem.  Just connect via IP address.  Of course finding servers will be more difficult.

For FH2, it really isn't a problem......there are two 762 servers and one WaW server?  Not that difficult.

BF1942: yeah, you can probably still join over Xfire, but how many players have Xfire? 10%?
Either people like it or not, games always rely on a large mass of noobs. Without them, the servers are so empty no-one likes playing  on them. The moment the main server stops giving the servers you can play on, those noobs will just leave the game not knowing what to do and the players who still can access the game, will stop liking what as become of the game. As much as the remaining players may try, it will end soon once the main server is down  :'(

Keylogger, no. I'm just saying people don't like their credit card information being looked at. And if you make a purchase on Origin, that's what they'll do. Again, not saying they see everything, EA isn't NSA here, just saying Origin looks at your credit card info. So does Steam if I'm not mistaken...

Also, FH2 launcher does have a log-in, but it logins for you with your BF2 account. Go to options and you can select your account you login with.

That's right, I forgot about the log-in in the options.  You just don't see the logging in process.

I do not want to register my BF2 with origen. I also suspect this will loose a lot of players from China, S. America, Russia, which will effect fan base of PR2 a lot.

Surely we can make a stand alone server browser for the game launcher?

Ehm, not trying to go pro Origin or anything here, but ANY company where you purchase something via credit card NEEDS to get your CC information. That's how paying with a CC works. :)
On the other hand you could use Paypal with Origin to buy stuff, but then Paypal knows who you are. So not much gained there. Does Origin allow Prepaid-CCs?

To be honest, the easier and more convinient it is to play a mod for any average player, the better. If you like origin or not, why forcing people to have another account or login information just for this mod?

What is the latest news on this?

And perhaps a mod could edit the OP to give the state of this info so we can all go spread the word to our respective communities, families, cults, etc, without reading through 6 pages to guess at it. Or put an announcement in the sticky...

Yep, both PR and FH2 will continue just fine, we have stuff ready and working. It's in the testing phase at the moment and it's looking good :)

They may try to bring us down and push us into their cash-milking schemes but the Battlefield community (the original one, not those 12 year old COD converts) will find a way to keep the magic going, I believe in it!

Also from Spitfire "We can't post anything yet.

Fh2 will remain."

Thank you Spitfire and Action man for doing this!

However, I have one question;

- Do we have to wait until the server shut down, Before you can test if your work-around works?

(Maybe 762 can intergrate the ranksystem/awards fully this time? With the expert help?)

I don't see why that wouldn't be possible if they team up with 762. I believe 762 run a separate database for their stats and they probably have the nicknames for all people that played on their server to this day.

Only problem left to solve is how to get those nicknames back to the right people... Certainly GameSpy won't give access to their database and the passwords are encrypted in bf2 profile files last time I checked. And I doubt we know the algorithm used for encryption so running them through the launcher would also be useless...

(or would it? I guess the devs could collect the encrypted passwords with the launcher and tie them to the names in the database, and then update the launcher to communicate with the new custom master server and check that the user has the right password stored in his profile, then ask him to change it to whatever - of course that would require everyone who wants to make sure he keeps his nickname to download FH2 and run the launcher... Profiles not stored on local computers would be gone though).

We do not encourage piracy. That being said, if EA was interested in having CD keys work, they could have continued multiplayer support, but they didn't. It is not up to us to worry about their problems.

Well I didn't mean Piracy because the $15 version is on steam and you would never lose it unless you lose your account but there is a $5 version in Game.co.uk but it is a physical copy the you might lose the key so it doesn't really matter now, Thank you for your reply  :)

We do not encourage piracy.
Battlefield 2 essentially becomes abandonware after multiplayer stops working by the end of June. All there will be left is the single player portion (I don't even remember what it was, bots?) and local multiplayer. 90 percent of the total game experience goes away since BF2 is really multiplayer only. EA can't sell the game anymore. It wont be coming up on GOG.com any time soon if ever.
I would go as far as to say that after the June server mayhem Battlefield 2 ceases to exist and Forgotten Hope 2 and Project Reality stop being Battlefield 2 mods. Instead they become sort of standalone games running on the Refractor 2 engine.
You want to play Forgotten Hope 2? Somehow acquire a copy of Battlefield 2. Download and install FH2 files. Play. No questions asked.

Good evening,

tonight at 18.00 UTC you will be able to download Forgotten Hope 2.47.

With this update, one important change will be made, the name servers for
your accounts will be switched from Gamespy to a joint server that has been hosted by
Project Reality and Forgotten Hope 2. The result ist that your old [762] FH2 statistics until FH2.46
will still be accessible on our www.762-ranking.de (http://www.762-ranking.de) website. But they will not be continued.

You will be able to pick your nickname after you have installed FH2.47 - by using the FH2 launcher.

Feel free to discuss here or in that thread and share your ideas:
http://www.762-ranking.de/forum/showthread.php?1184-FH2-47-today-18-00-UTC-what-changes

Don't get frustrated, we'll keep FH2 up and running, even if it takes a bit of work :)

For the [762] Server Admin Team,
x4fun I<ODIUM>I

So...did this gamespy shutdown not happen after all? I thought they were supposed to go down end of May. Because I tried to load up and join a server to play vanilla battlefield 2(just as a test....don't care for it at all generally) and I had no problem connecting to a server and playing for a bit. I also did it in vanilla bf1942. Again, no problem. So...what gives?
