I recently re-installed a Radeon HD6850 with current release Catalyst 13.12 and find the Anti-Aliasing options have changed; there is no 2xEQ (Enhanced Quality). So, what settings are recommended for clarity and detail while maintaing good performance? Should the AA filter Edge-Detect be used and does Texture Filtering Quality at High make a difference?

shahram, at least future updates will be minimal with the FH2 Launcher but in the meantime if you cannot get it by sneakernet (i.e. removable media from someone) then a BitTorrent client allows pause and resume over multiple sessions as necessary (of course FTP is capable of resume too but does not appear to be an option). In any case, be sure to verify checksums afterwards to ensure complete files.

Thinking I could try installing overtop and in case of problems could resort to removing the folder and re-installing... I ran the installer again and during a next step it offers to optionally remove the old version anyway so overcomes the problem of not having an uninstaller. I suppose I will let it remove it then since I do have backups/clones if necessary to recover configurations or custom maps.

Sorry I cannot offer any help except to use the full installer instead.
I did get the full installer but wonder about the setup stating "Please ensure you have removed any previous FH2 versions before continuing."
However, I have no uninstaller and do not want to lose the configuration either. So should I just delete the folder "\Battlefield 2\mods\fh2"?

You should be running FH2.exe, not forgottenhope2.exe. To diagnose startup problems, run windowed to better see what is happening (possibly see error messages). Copy or create a shortcut to FH2.exe and append the target with switch fullscreen and value 0, such as:
"N:\Battlefield 2\FH2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 0
"N:\Battlefield 2\FH2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 0

I've been running SBXF_PCDRVBETA_US_2_18_0015A for nearly a year without issue so no worries though of course cannot be sure if it will solve that BSOD.
Another tip to minimize problems while ensuring quality and performance is to verify OpenAL is current (6.14.357.25 installed to system by these driver packages) and replace the default DirectSound3D wrapper named BF2OpenAL.dll (otherwise named wrap_oal.dll) with the OpenAL hardware router OpenAL32.dll.
Specifically: rename, move, or archive "\Battlefield 2\BF2OpenAl.dll" then copy "System32\OpenAL32.dll" to "\Battlefield 2", and rename to BF2OpenAL.dll.
For those not using a hardware X-Fi card, you may still benefit from likewise replacing BF2OpenAL.dll with current wrap_oal.dll (2.2.0.7).

I really enjoyed the 200 server test. There were around 120 playing Purple Heart Lane. Good times. Thanks to all involved.

I still experience it too.
One cause of slow log on is an accumulation of unreachable "favorite" servers (which are added automatically). So try removing those.

It's especially annoying when there is only one slot open... you click to join, lose connection, try again, and then it's full

With BF2, I have always overridden with 16xAF since horrible quality in-game, and since AMD Adaptive AA was introduced have applied that as well. Since FH2.4, I have applied MSAA rather than in-game, but only 2x due to relatively high resolution of 1920x1080. I have always used shadows at low due to poor results even at high. But I recall coming across some blurb about possible changes to shadows so wonder if there has been any improvement, particularly for AMD. Also, kudos for the aspect-ratio correction of the HUD with 2.45 that EA couldn't be arsed with.
