Ugliest:
Why? Because it looks like an upgraded WW1 tank. Those were hideous, lumpy and everything's out of proportion. With the size of the Churchill the gun itself looks like a 7 year old's d*ck on an obese old man (tank). Heh, almost like Churchill himself.. It's typically something for the English to make, why can't they produce something beautiful, practical and powerful for a change? Except the Crusader, which looks kinda slick.
Most beautiful:
The Panther, ofcourse! Look at that sexy sloped armour, perfect proportions, I especially like how the frontal slope is symmetric with the back, also sloped. It's that hot German blonde on high heels. Only with a very, very powerful gun. With a muzzle ofcourse. Have you ever seen a Panther that didn't have georgious camo? And the sound.. oh the sound makes me wanna come.. and kick some allied ass with that tank! No tank was more perfect and beautiful than the Panther, precisely like the animal itself, they hit it spot on, it's g'dang predator.
Post yours. :)

My favorite tank is T-34/76 (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d9/T34_2.jpg). It is both ugly as all hell but yet so beautiful.

The T31 demolition tank. Only its mother could love it. I mean SERIOUSLY what was the designer thinking? "Right what were gonna do is tank this the sherman, you know, the tank that looks like a chubby 8-year-old packed for his first day of school and make it even more lumpy and tall and unbalanced a FUCK UGLY! :)
BEAUTIFUL

It was hard, so I just chose one of my favorite tanks of all time. 8)

Interesting. I, for one, think that both of those tanks (Infantry Tank Mk. IV And Panzer V) look very good.
If we are allowed to post assault guns, I'd like to mention the Ps. 531 aka StuG 40 Ausf. G with Finnish modifications. It's small, cute and effective.
Least attractive tank... hmm. I have to say Sherman II. It's just so.. tall and round. You should see it in real life to completely understand. :p
Special nomination for being damn nice looking tank goes to the German E-100 Ausf. B. This is of course purely speculative construction, but it's just so awesome:

I like the Panzer III(http://modelartanddesign.com/USERIMAGES/PANZER-3.JPG)
and this pic
-
Is that a PanzerI? It's so cute! I wish it had cheecks so I could pinch it.
That Japanese tank indeed looks.. scary. You'd think its blades would start spinning and the tank just drive towards your position to literally shred its enemies apart. That'd be bloody and scary. It does look like some sort of construction/demolition machinery attached.
Don't forget to post your UGLIEST tank guys ;) And ofcourse, assaults guns and self-propelled guns, etc. are candidates too. :)
-
Is that a PanzerI?
If you were refering to my pretty, nope its a Panzer II "Luchs"
-
I think he means that pic from Desertfox? If so, that's an early type Panzer 3 with internal mantlet...and a bad drawing, because it is leaving out the non-moveable coax mg.
And on the jap tank, IIRC, it was amphibious, with the blade looking things mean to push out/cut/something barbed wire.

WHAT?!?!?!?!
You think that a Jagdpanther cannot destroy the puny Comet over and over? Your sir just awakened the german bias in me.
Also resize the Comet picture, the page just got out of proportion.
-
That's a Cromwell tank, is it not? Anyway, I couldn't care less if that thing could destroy anything, it's a tank destroyer, that's what it's for. It is slopey and overweight.
-
Actually CPS, it was a rather fast tank, so it wasn't some overweight behemoth like the Jagdtiger :P
-
Well it's gross and it sucks and I bet it has no friends.
-
Comet > Everything on its way

No thats not a Cromwell its a Comet tank used in the late 1945; more or less it was like the Tiger of the brits. The Jagdpanther is a tank destroyed that was made in the chassis of the Panther and have the gun of the Tiger II (Pak 43). This is by far the most useful and best tank destroyer in the war; this baby have a good speed and weight ratio. And it was quite fast at 50 km/h for the time. Also 100 mm of armor, then slopped meaning it got around 160mm of armor, maybe more. Plust just look at it, its beautiful and the engine sound is just lovely.
-
Christ I swore it was a Cromwell, unless Google lied to me and he's my bud so he wouldn't do that, we tight.
And I don't care if it's fast it is lame and dumb.
-
Nope, that is definitly a cromwell. Comets have return rollers for the tracks.
Anyways, since its going this way: Centurion > all German armour

I found every German tanks pretty standard. Their design are all plain, and very well matching the exact proportion about my imagination of "how a tank should look like". The most balanced aspect in the design for me is Panther tank, especially the Ausf.G model. It has the most "tank look" of all WW2 vehicles IMO. Tiger I is too plain, too overrated, but it stands clear as a "tank look" standard. So does other country's tank that match this proportion, for example Cromwell tank and Crusader III or Russian T-34s (somehow i don't like model 42's turret shape, the 39's mod is good, and the best is T-34-85). I think it would look more proportional if T-34's turret placed a bit rearward.
The most ugly looking of all panzers for me is Panzer III, it is too plain, too wide for its proportion, looks like a short obese guy that is out of balance. It has a kind of "boring charm" for me. I rarely take them when playing FH2.
The most beautiful? I think Jagdpanther is cool, it has big slope armor, makes it look slick, and forward firing MGs! One of the most task-balanced cannon-carrying vehicle of WW2 IMO.
The ugliest? Apart from all the funnies (modified tank hulls), specialized vehicles, and tank concepts... the ugliest tank that is generally deployed in service is Char B-1 bis. That tank has a cartoon-ish look and its thick armor can be observed from its looks. It looks like that it is a design from another dimension or planet. If i were facing this tank, i would have smirked because they look more like a toy than a fearsome battle machine. Make no mistake, I do know that in the early war, even the Germans feared these tanks for their armor thickness. But i judge it here only by its looks.

Thats a Alkett-Raumgerat
Some kind of Miner Roller, never saw service.
Spend all of its life on Kummersdorf, were it was found by the Soviet forces.
The High Command ordered the project to be stopped, too outdated/Slow for 1944 and it was left there.
The soviet forces placed it in Kubinka, after some trials.
I think the, thing, had a extra wheel on its back, but it seems that, its not there..
Still, a very unique piece of history!

From what I know, it was meant to be a high speed recon vehicle....

Oh so we retort to this type of problems around here. So? My grand father was just a MG42 machine gunner that fought in the Eastern Front, the Ardennes and in so more parts of Europe. Did he help Hitler's evil plans? No...Did he commit war crimes? No...he was just a soldier doing his duty for his coutry. Just to making that clear; my earlier comment was just a joke.

It is some modified cromwell, alot of the tanks at that Israeli museum look odd. But Eat Uranium is right. The comets had return rollers, a different shaped turret and a new shape gun mantlet.
**EDIT** Just did some searching and aparently its just been fitted with a dummy gun. It is a cromwell.

OffT:
Joining the ss das reich isn't a meaningless choice(except for the forced enlist)
Waffen SS aren't soldier, they are milician of the nsdap.
You don't need to have your nsdap card but you fought for the ideology. You joined in by opportunism or by ideology.
He didn't commit war crimes but he did help or was nazi.
In time of peace, the waffen ss role was to crush any german/occupied people revolt(not all the german was nazi and this is the reason why the power need waffen ss as super policemen to crush revolt, things police can't do ) or army revolt.
In time of war, the waffen ss fought for the army (they weren't in the army), borrowed by the nsdap.
Sure, the army was pro-nazi (ss prefered the army compared to the waffenss ...) and has commited crimes, but it was 12 millions of enlist men (or 18 i don't remember, but with that number you can easily found criminal in it) compared to 400 000 german volunteers (i don't remember the exact number or german native) + nazi foreign nationalists craps fighting for the nsdap first.
I certainly can't reduce this very complex subject in 3 paragraphs, but what is sure is that the waffen ss aren't "soldier" like the other and weren't fighting for their "vaterland". This crappy idea is an other great idea of the post war nazi to give them a new virginity.
Perhaps alakazou shouldn't have been so picky. But your answer smells bad imo.

Most EPIC AWESOME BEAUTIFULL LOVELY TANK=Churchill Tank MK III to later
(http://www.omgmod.org/wiki/images/2/2f/ChurchillTank.jpg)
Its because the churchill does not totally looks like a WW1 tank. It looks like an awesome tank wich can take hits. And thats what it did. The early versions withstood 88MM Shells and 75MM shells for frak sake! And When the Panther came to the fields, suddenly a new version has arrived=154MM frontal armor! Despite the Firepower issue that was never adressed(75MM gun <.<) it did its job. It was used in DOZENS of usefull and effective variants, it could drive even the most Crappiest of terrain. It could climb hills untill their was no tomorow, and it has an epic variant wich fire's sweet 290MM Spigot Mortars to a range of 150Meter wich even frakking blows up tigers
Sexiest=M18 Hellcat it is a bloody BLASPHEMY that the M18 is STILL not included in FH2

Let me correct their weapons weren't good enough against MIGHTY SOVIET UNION. Other allies were just some little fly farts. Russians were the ones that won the war they are the ones you should thank for winning, too much Hollywood now days.
I would be interested to see what the result would have been without the support from the US. Steel, other raw materials, fuel, lubricants, machines, complete factories, clothes, shoes, food... not to mention 2,000 locomotives, 11,000 rail cars, 18,700 aircraft, enough trucks that by the fall of Berlin 2/3 of Red Army trucks were still US-made, etc. 4,000 M4 Shermans, 1,300 M3 Lees, 1,700 M3 Stuarts might seem small numbers but were delivered at the most critical stage when T-34 production was still gearing up.

May be effective and all that shit, but damn thats like a deformed Stuart with a horrible mutation right on his face.
Im pretty sure i saw a pic of the PzI with a Tiger in Normandy, any story like, i know some Panzer Is where still in service but in Yugoslivia, all were lost in late 1944 iirc.
How about, PzIs in Berlin? because i think i saw a PzII once.
-
Donno about Pz1 in Berlin, I just know that the 38 or so Pz1C served in normandy. This wasn't the type with the 2 MGs though, it had a Pz2-like turret with a 20mm. Still would be awesome to see someday :P And yes, all were lost in combat there, though I bet they did make good mobile pillboxes for awhile....

TOG2 is really huge. Designed when WW2 was lurking around a corner, TOG = The Old Gang, the guys who made the WW1 tanks, they thought that a new war in Europe would end up in the same trench mess as WW1 and TOG over there was their answer, huge cannon, big fat armour, immense crossing performance, perfect for trench warfare :P
-

isn't that a tank destroyer, not a tank?
Indeed it was. It did its job very well in that role. The Hellcat quick acceleration + speed made it an excellent tank destroyer, even if the frontal gun couldnt penetrate the tiger and panther frontal armor with standard ammo
Some combat performance=
On September 19, 1944, in the Nancy Bridgehead near Arracourt, France, the 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion was attached to the 4th Armored Division. Lt. Edwin Leiper led one M18 platoon of C Company to Rechicourt-la-Petite, on the way to Moncourt. He saw a German tank gun muzzle appearing out of the fog 30 feet away, and deployed his platoon. In a five minute period, five German tanks of the 113 Panzer Brigade were knocked out for the loss of one M18. The platoon remained in their position and destroyed a further ten German tanks, with the loss of another two M18s. One of the platoon's M18s, commanded by Sgt Henry R. Hartman, knocked out six of these and lived to fight another day. Most of the German tanks were Panthers.
The M18 Hellcat was a key element during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge.[7] On December 19 and 20, the 1st Battalion of the 506th PIR, was ordered to support Team Desobry, a battalion-sized tank-infantry task force of the 10th Armored Division assigned to defend Noville[3] located north-northeast of both Foy and of Bastogne just 4.36 miles (7 km) away. With just four[2] M18 tank destroyers of the 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion to assist, the paratroopers attacked units of the 2nd Panzer Division, whose mission was to proceed by secondary roads via Monaville (just northwest of Bastogne) to seize a key highway and capture, among other objectives, fuel dumps—for the lack of which the overall German counter-offensive faltered and failed. Worried about the threat to its left flank in Bastogne, it organized a major joint arms attack to seize Noville. Team Desobry's high speed highway journey to reach the blocking position is one of the few documented cases[2] wherein the legendary top speed of the M18 Hellcat (55 miles per hour (89 km/h), faster than today's M1A2 Abrams) was actually used to get ahead of an enemy force as envisioned by its specifications.

Marder I 'Geschutzwagen', I find it to be quite an ugly Tank Destroyer due to it's bulky looks, but i'll leave you guys to your own opinions on it. ;)
I don't have favorites when in relation to "beautiful" tanks, but in a list:
Churchill, due to how it's design was made for it's actual purpose.
M18 'Hellcat'
M24 'Chaffee'
M36 'Jackson'
Pz.Kmpf V Ausf. G 'Panther'
and the KV-1 and T-34 tanks.
oh and before I forget, I find the French B1-bis to be quite an ugly tank aswell, it just looks a bit like the TOG.
-
The M10 is a combination of the worst parts of the M36 and M18. The doctrine called for a fast, lightly armored and well armed tank destroyer, and so they got a slow, lightly armored and meh armed tank destroyer.
M18 was a work of art.

Just found a new one, the WWII Batman tank:
The Schofield tank was named after its designer, E.J.Schofield, who worked for General Motors, in Wellington, New Zealand. In 1940 when it seemed that the Pacific War might reach New Zealand and with little likelihood of weapons coming from Britain, a need for the production of indigenous armoured fighting vehicles arose.

At first I thought that was shopped... but then I googled.
Wow.

Shit!!! That wins, what in the hell is that? I have never really saw something so ugly in our army before. It was good that Venezuela just supported the allies sending just oil and war supplies.

I concur with that, just that I would be vomiting for its uglyness. And the armor looks like its made of cardboard.
-
You guys look wrong at it, technical that is a very good design. All plates are at an angle, there is enough space to drive over bumps etc., it got an all-round traversing turret, because of the wheels probably a reasonable speed though. Only thing might be it has no anti-infantry MG. As the turret is quite high to hit close by infantry trying to shove a satchel up your exhaust pipe.

Both tanks look like they came out of the Top Gear workshop...

Not really, it has poor visability, only the 2 front portholes by the looks of it. The armour looks thin, no matter what the angle is...plus it must have a wide turn radius because the armour go down around the front wheel pretty close to them, plus the tires are still showing...which can easily be flattened, granted they are probably combat rims..but still. Not to mention the akward design which makes it harder to navigate into certain places..not to mention its weird profile which can't be hidden, and due to the front and rear..good luck on hills/ditches and more

It has a

Maybe it's not supposed to win a battle with a Tiger tank. By the looks of it, it's an excellent patrol vehicle/police vehicle.
I think it does look awesome, and the design would be advanced armoured car in the 1920's.

Panther G, no questions
I think I have to agree with this post.
As far as ugliest goes, the T31, Churchill and such are all worthy of that nomination.
The Panther Ausf. G is orgasmic, the StuG III Ausf. G neues/late is pretty hot too and so are variosu others. The proportions, the shapes... damn! If I where a robot I'd make love to those things! Rawr!!
I love the looks of French tanks, they look amazing. I can't really think of an ugly tank. I can of strange tanks.
T10 Mine Exploder for example, I laughed so hard when I first saw it some years ago.

Churchill? Ugliest? Come on.
It looks like a crocodile. And THAT one could bite, on any occasion. It carried every sorts of things from pontoone bridges 2 cords of woods 2 any thing u wanted to transport. It could carry, what, 20 poeple? Traverse any terrain with ease, especially hills and ditches.
And should i mention the Crocodile version with flame? -----> Now that's RAWR!

I think it looks pretty sick. I must admit that I do not like those Panthers and Tigers and shit, too... angle-y? But the Churchill is much more graceful.

It is horrible, for me the most beautiful tanks are: Hetzer, Jagdpanther, Panther, Jagdpanzer IV and Tiger (Yes, I know that the Jagdpanther and Jagdpanzer are tank destroyers, but technicism gets tiresome).
-
Those are all the gross fat and squat looking ones.

In my (that is, Churchill's) defense I have 2 say that both JagdPanther and JagdTiger are big and obese, cumbersome and slow, and if they wanna hit something they can only hit it in front facing the target.
The Churchill on the other hand was low, much harder target, it could mount a mortar cannon 2 swap for it's normal AT cannon and it was an infantry support tank. All the German tanx were built so that noone could ride on em, nor carry ANYTHING.

-

No it isnt. Jagdpanther was very fast, good protection with around 170mm of frontal armor because of the slopped armor; the strong gun of the Tiger 2 and it was able to penetrate all types of tanks in WW2 of the allies. The concept of the Jagdpanther makes it for me the best tank destroyer of the war.
OR because they are german and the churchill is not german?
No, tha has nothing to do with it. I also like the looks of english Comet tank.
-
Jagdpanther is considered the top tank destroyer of the entire war. As Yustax says, it was very, VERY fast, great protection, WONDERFUL gun and optics, low profile, and above all, the lack of a turret does not make it a poor tank, considering the Jagdpanther was purely used as an ambush tank. It didn't NEED to have a big clunky turret to destroy its low profile and create weak spots.
-
It was also obese and probably died of an heart attack before it was forty.

It was the Andre the Giant of WW2 and could knock out all type of tanks in WW2.

Simple said= Great firepower, armor to withstand standard allied AT tank guns, Great speed, great mobility and a MAYBACH HL230 PETROL ENGINE ROARING WITH 690HP
-
MAYBACH HL230 PETROL ENGINE ROARING WITH 690HP
Which breaks down all the time, since it is the same V12 in a car, just with enlargened displacement.
-
M18 Hellcat was probably the best tank destroyer in the American conception; for the European type, I'd have to agree with the Jagdpanther though.
Its important to make the distinction between American pattern and Eurasian pattern TDs though.
-
I would never say the Jagdpanther is the prettiest, because it's actually quite ugly

Tiger is only meh also. I think the Panzer 3 is the best lookin german tank. That or the 4 without the skirt. I like the Cromwell though, and the T34/85.
-
The JPz 38(t) is more beautiful than the JagdPanther, simply because it maintaints its lines all around. The JP on the other hand suffers becuase it hase that nasty verticle line at the back of the superstructure. Also, the mantlet looks quite bad IMHO.
I feel that the best looking of the assault guns and TDs made by Germany is the StuG with the 7.5cm L24 and no schurzen.

Cromwell is boxy, no curves. The crusader is long, lean and sleek.

Yergh!
Only the Crusader Mk I and Mk II with the late mantlet are nice looking. The early cast mantlet has the wrong curves, and the Mk III has no curves at all.

No, I actually put a whiny brat on the M8. Because there's countless threads of people complaining about the Puma being too hard and being able to outflank every single ally tank while the M8 cant do it.
-
Funny, I havn't seen that many threads like that. In matter of fact I think for the most part they are both pretty equally efficient at their rolls, with the difference that the M8 looks A LOT better ( :-*), which is what counts on this thread... :)

For you, for me the Puma looks sexy, packs a sexy Pak 38 and can kill all those tommy cookers with a hit in any part of their tanks while the M8 have problems even with the Stug frontal armor. In the hands of a good tank commander it can rise hell and all, but still its not a match to the lethality of the Puma.

That's an opinion...lol! I say it's a good enough match... but none of that matters, this is about the sexiness of these vehicles! So I say the M8 wins between the Puma and the M8, who agrees?

I agree, M8 looks nicer.

Why not? Could deal with almost any late ally tank in WW2 at long rranges and was a better choice than a Marder fitting as a light tank destroyer. Sure its very small and the crew would be very uncomfortable; but nonethless a very effective tank killer, never understimate this cute fella.

Panther is undoubtidly the sexiest tank
The KT looks like a pregnant panther
Sherman is too round and looks fat
British tanks (except the crusader) are all boxy
The Tiger is way too boxy
Tank destroyers (jagdpanther and hetzer etc those types) are small and fat
Marder is just ugly
I aint counting armoured cars since in my view they arent what this thread is mainly about( sexiest tracked armoured vehicle)
all french tanks look gay
so do multi turret tanks

Im just kidding mate, by the way Im not nazi not I endorse their ideology's or their actions. I just respect the "combat actions" only of the Waffen SS combat divisions thats it. Just leave it that way, concentrate on the topic at hand. And if they make fun of the tanks that I like, dont see why I can do the same thing.
Just keep it friendly, we are just kidding with the comparissons; dont take it that seriously.

People can say what they want, but counterattack was FTW. Up north you start with a Char B1 and 2 somou's, and south one Matilda I and a Matilda II
No mather what happend, people always sticked together. I drove the Char B1 alot, and many times i saw the Somou's on my flanks, and someone in the Turret of my Char B1 for Anti-tank duties.
And the city fighting was Infantery only terrain. Everyone exept the flyboys had their great fill in counterattack
I would gladly have a Exact copy of Counterattack on FH2 anyday. Complete with the Panzer's III with both 37MM and 50MM guns. The panzers IV, II, 38t's
Clashing against the Char's, Somou's, Matilda's
my god, the dream
-
I never played FH1
french tanks just look crappy
-
Look yes
But they where pretty though
The only means of stopping them was Airpower and the lack of radio's in french tanks.
German, British and US tanks had radio's. French tanks had radio reciever, with the command tank having a radio for recieving and sending information.
So yes, the other french tankers could now=ah mon dieu! Voila un Panzer III
But if they saw other enemy units, they couldnt tell about it
And when the Lead command tank was destroyed, mein gott, the chaos.
That and that most french tanks had 2 Man turrets. So the Tank commander also had to act as a loader
-
Laffey, what tanks do you like?
-
The french tanks, to put it lightly, even with their deficiencies in turret crew and radios, butchered the german armour in 1940. Also, there should be 1 to no 50mm Panzer 3s on any 1940 map, they barely saw any action, and only at the very, very end.
-
French Tanks <3
Also, French Tanks > Any German Early war Tank.
Some people are jealus of the French, they dont wanna realize the French had the best armor of the Late 30s and Early 40s.
Poor France, the German Propaganda and French Haters or Hollywood made france look like a idiot, i you listen to them, instead of Grabbing a book, you will see that France is, according to them, a Coward.
I say.
Fuck Them.
-
yes. we need more non-american war films!

Then again France lost because they placed their confidence in the Maginot line and thought that germans tanks couldnt go around the forest. And look at that, they did it. Stukas also destroyed many french tanks. German armor in that time was still in diapers and the french did have the best tanks for that time.

ah yes you are correct
supplies where also a problem with the french armoured units
French tanks still look epic imo, they look rough. And tough
If they just dint spended those millions and millions of francs on that maginot line
Yes it kept the french safe from a direct assault, but the Cash spended in that line could have been far better used in making more tanks, more AA guns (French had low amounts of them), more figthers and updates to them all
-
VOn MUDRA! Come educate this man on the Maginot Line!
Watched that mini series Apocalipsis - WW2; some general misplaced their trust in the Maginot Line, and one; I dont remember his name warned that it wouldnt hold and it wasnt exactly secure. Germans also parachuted behind it, and started to destroy the heavy howitzers and other defences. Other than that, I dont know more about the line.
-
I was pretty sure that its intended purpose to circumnavigate German forces.
-
I was pretty sure that its intended purpose to circumnavigate German forces.
I think the exact plan was to force the germans to go around the maginot line through Belgium, and in that time that country was neutral. But they did surprise the french when they went through the Ardennes forest.

Nope, that was Epen Emil.
For starters, the French placed their best troops and armoured divisions on the Belgian Border, and moved rapidly to meet the German forces advancing through Belgium. Meanwhile, the Army Group C of the german army, fully 1/3 of their attack force (B attacked Holland, A attacked Belgium and France), attacked the Maginot Line. Yes, the germans didn't do this magic single thrust through the Ardennes. They actually attacked, with a full army group, against the Maginot Line. And were slaughtered. I mean absolutely butchered. By the end of the war, the entire line was holding out, despite being completely surrounded. French diplomats had to go in to tell them the war was over.
The french lost because of poor high command structure that ordered retreats at battles like Glemboux Gap when victory was nearly assured (post war, several german generals admitted that if the french had simply kept up the attack instead of pulling back at Glemboux, they would have cut off and annihilated the german attack). In the end, the Maginot Line did its job, it vectored the Germans around it, as they failed to penetrate it. It forced them into Flander's fields, where the French had wanted them to go. The fact that the french then failed to make use of this advantage, and instead through extreme caution and poor use of their divisions by the HQ, was not because of the Maginot Line. It served its purpose fully. The French had more tanks and superior tanks to anything the Germans had. Their HQ just couldn't run the war.

Laffey, what tanks do you like?
What tanks i think are the sexiest?
Panther
Crusader(early ones)
M18
M26
PzII Luchs
What tank I like
Sherman Firefly
Panther
M18
M26
Basically anything that has a big gun except slow beasts like the Tiger and the KT
-
M18 had same gun as the M10 and later model shermans...the M36 is the one with the big 90mm ;)
-
No they had a different gun albeit they had similar penetration
M10 had a M7 76 mm
M18 had a M1A1 76mm
M18s gun penetration was a couple of mm higher
-
I was under the impression that the 76mm gun of the m18 was different from the 76mm gun of the M10; namel, the m10 was an adapted AA gun and the m18 was a dedicated AT gun.
-
Anything with a big gun? Char b1 Bis got a big gun.
-
yes but that is what i Like
That means performance
Not looks
And I was under the impression that the 75mm on the Char was a howitzer designed for close support although im in no doubt that it could knock out a german tank at close range
-
yes but that is what i Like
That means performance
Not looks
Im in the same boat; I prefer performance over looks. Thats why I prefer the Jagdpanther over many tanks.

I just was sharing an opinion. I think I have already stablished my point of the most fugly and most beautiful tanks many times on this thread.

Well it isnt my fault when i said that French tanks looks fugly everybody said French tanks PwNz0rZ German tanks. They are so much more superior etc lets get back on topic
-
They PwNz0rZ them look-wise, as well.
-
They PwNz0rZ them look-wise, as well.
not really. German tanks looked better at tht point
-
Most Beautiful is T-50, no doupt.
Can't say anything about ugliest ???.
-
Good lookin' tank. Really I like anything that isn't too heavy.

-
even if it is a clichee but i can't help it...the King Tiger is just the most beautiful tank ever designed in the world! it has the perfect shapes and a very sexy body...it combined the best gun together with the best armor in ww2! It wasn't only beautiful, it was also the most effecive tank killer on the battlefields in WW2. only i terms of kills-per-losses it was the best tank of all time and reached a 16:1 kill-to-loss ratio. It probably was the most successful tank in killing enemy tanks on the eastern front. There were some King Tiger aces. Two of them (Karl Körner and Kurt Knispel) destroyed over 100+ to 160+ russian tanks in total. two other aces scored "only" 30+ to 60+ tank kills (Karl bromman and Georg Diers).

the second most beautiful AFV designed in ww2 has to be the heavy tank destroyer Jagdpanther.
You just have to love this moster with a very cool design. It was one of the the most successful tank destroyer in terms of kills per loss (after the Elefant).
(http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/6260/578v.jpg) (http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/6544/colourpics0001.jpg)
3rd will be the Jagdpanzer IV it has a very low profile and a powerful L/70 high velocity gun which could destroy any enemy tank at long ranges.

shooting weaker tanks
huuurraah
I glady wanted to see them batteling Pershings and IS-2 with decent experienced crews ;)
Still, their where some pretty good panzercommanders out their. And many of them battle'd with tactics. Not "LOL I HAVE BETTER ARMAR AND ARMAMANET SO I SO WILL OWN YOU
New german crews who behaved like that, had a survival chance just as high as an american Sherman tank crew.
That kingtiger in your second picture is stationed in La Gleize, belgium. Its a pretty tank indeed. It is a shame its engine is missing though
-
So many Tiger II pics. Anyways, I think M1 Abrams, Leopard II or Challenger II win the best kill to death ratio of all time.
Regardless, best tank (when seen from behind): Mark IV
Nice arse

It's about world war 2. I posted a Mark IV and it got deleted.

Hey, there was that one in Berlin! Or was it a mark VI? I can't remember.

but there's is no proof whether it was used in the defense in the city
although i think it was used since the Germans used everything they had

What do u think about these beasts?

ISU 152 is a box
M26 is quite sexy
IS2 is alright except the turret is too boxy
-
ISU and M26 look like caricatures, with the proportions of their turrets, guns, and bodies. They ooze power, but don't quite seem as unstoppably juggernautish as the KT.
-
I hate all the heavy tanks. Gross. Anything above a Panzer IV is too much.
-
lal i found tis verry old topic about ugly vs beautiful tanks while searching for a post about the sherman calliope, i had a question about it, when did it saw action, thought it would be a nice vehicle for Fh2, but only if it really saw any action
and while im here
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b5/Bundesarchiv_Bild_101I-244-2306-14%2C_R%C3%BCckzug_nach_Ungarn%2C_Panzer_V.jpg)
Most Sexy fo sho!
-
wow that thread is old ...
well I dont understand the hetzer hating here ... the gun isnt in the middle, so? this might be impractical, but as for looks i think its cool. it doesnt look as boring as a jagdpanzer IV. and the rear of the hetzer just looks awesome:
as for the ugly tanks i think theres a lot: the jagdpanzer IV with the long 75mm/"panther"-gun looks just weird. also called guderian duck because it was so "head-heavy" (my english fails here).
and the a-version looks even worse:
but also most allied tanks lack this special something. they are mass products, nothing special behind it. its like: hey lets mass produce a tank, just for having 50000 tanks, just throw some metal and some kind of gun together. shermans and t34s just look boring.
-
My most beautifullest WWII tank is still (and will probably always be) the Panter, but since that one got drooled on more than enough in this thread already I'll go with another choice. When it comes to design I'm heavily german-biased, they had a knack for combining design with engineering.
I always had a soft spot for the Skdfz 222 (armored scoutcars are allowed right?). It looks cute, but still tough and all the weird angles in its design make it look quite futuristic. The 20MM gun is perfect for the overall dimensions, the previous version with the MG just looks a bit weak.
(http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5548/tc22212.jpg) (http://img69.imageshack.us/i/tc22212.jpg/)
The long barreled PIII-J comes in close second. I dunno, that one just has "classic tank" written all over it. And, although it's boxy and the bolts sticking out make it look like a shrunken battleship, I kinda like the Cromwell too. :)
There are more ugly than pretty tanks, so that choice was harder. The Churchill, early Shermans, jap tanks (altough the Chi-ha looks okay), etc., all range from butt-ugly to uninspired at most.
Okay, with the Churchill I must admit: it looks like the Brits at least tried to design a proper ugly tank. Kudo's for that.
But one of my personal ugliest is also german by the way: the Märder III.
(http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/3606/marderiiiaberdeen0004sr.jpg) (http://img809.imageshack.us/i/marderiiiaberdeen0004sr.jpg/)
Boy oh boy, just look at it. It looks like it'll fall apart the moment you touch it. The Marder I is also kind of funny looking, but in a good way. The III is just a big fail.
-
you are right on the marder III but there was also a version that looked quite okay
(http://hsfeatures.com/images/marderiiimir_7.jpg)
the churchill while not totally ugly more or less reminds me of a ww1 tank (someone will get angry!)
-

Let me show you my most beautiful tank...
I give you The 76 mm Gun Motor Carriage (GMC) M18, also knows as The Hellcat
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b0/M18-Hellcat-wiesloch-19450401.jpg)
Not just a awesome name but also a good looking body and turret. Looks kinda like a Shermans hotter, older sister...
And now, for the fugly award...
The Type 89 medium tank I-Go. I don't like the look of the Japanese tanks at all so this was a hard choice but this one wins with the almost WW1 feel the front has.

The cutest tank will be M4A1 Sherman with all its round edges.
Proof: all my WW2 n00b friends and colleagues always commented like this when I jump into M4A1 in FH0.7:
"What kind of tank its that? Looks cute, like a toy!"
N00bs will agree that Tiger tanks look the most bad-ass, it has boxy hull and huge turret with big 88mm gun. Other than that, they cannot differentiate anything else.
I personally like "balanced" tanks, that means, the size of turret, guns, and hull is proportionate. E.g. This Panther, even from behind, it looks sleek.
By my definition, this one pretty much fits it all, and it also has that "modern" look.

British A34 Comet tank, because Cromwell's tiny barrel makes it look emasculated.

german objective on that map is to destroy KV and T34 tanks, and take flags ofcourse.
it could be nice :)

Most Beautiful:
It was slow, but had curves to die for and got the job done like no other (special mention: Panther, Firefly, Hetzer)
Ugliest:
A lot of French/Japanese tanks weren't that aesthetically pleasing
But at the end of the day, in order for a tank to look good, it had to have curves (sloped armour) and big assets (big gun, powerful engine), could handle any assignment (thick tracks, good suspension) and have the ability to know what's going on (raised cupola, increased commander awereness)
-
I know this is a thread about ww2 tanks.
but.....
most Beautiful tank of today:

too bad the dutch army is selling these german babies.

So a KT which couldn't go over most bridges because it was too heavy, took ages to transport anywere because it was too big to fir on trains, or broke down more than got shot was a perfect job do-er?

Second - please dont laugh about a T31 ... this isnt a 3x75 mm ... that was a 3x 105 mm howitzers . Imagine triple hit of 105 mm HEATs in Tiger II ;D

I love Panzer IV (without Schurtzen), Panther, Tiger, Tiger II; Cromwell, Firefly, Churchill; M26 Pershing.
Don't like T34 with the small turret (/85 looks cool though), KV nor any Russian tank really. Italians also knew how to NOT make nice tanks.
-
Second - please dont laugh about a T31 ... this isnt a 3x75 mm ... that was a 3x 105 mm howitzers . Imagine triple hit of 105 mm HEATs in Tiger II ;D
Imagine the fireball when that thing is torn in half by a Tiger II when the German tank crew sees its skyscraper-like silhouette rolling along. ;D

GERMAN BIAS! T31 would have raped everything!

Yup ... they are so cute ;D
-
Isn't the turret of that leopard 2 just a big shot trap?
Nope, unlike tanks like the Panther, which had a 'straight' front, the Leopard 2 turret is triangular so any round that hits the front of the turret bounces off to the side. And it appears the entire angled front part merely is an armor add-on to defeat hollow shaped charges.
Or as Wiki tells it...
The A5 introduced a wedge-shaped, spaced add-on armour to the turret front and the frontal area of the sides. These armour modules defeat a hollow charge prior to reaching the base armour. The spaced armour is also designed to affect kinetic-energy penetrators by forcing them to change direction and eroding them in the process; it does not form a shot-trap since it doesn't deflect the penetrators outwards to hit the hull or turret ring. The gun mantle was redesigned to accept the new armour.
-
Im a massive fan of ww2 tanks . there are many Beautiful and not so beautiful tanks but my favourite has got to be by far the Tiger 2. Those curves are just perfect and for some reason the turret looks handsome (dont ask about my selection of words and the not-so beautiful, the t70. it makes me cringe when i see uneven tanks and small and confined turrets. the front armour is uneven and the gun is pretty small
-
First post and necromancy !
