Or introduce the ligther mortars.....

UK=Ordnance SBML 2-inch mortar
US=M2 mortar 60MM
Germanies=5CM Granatwerfer 36
Too much work, besides most arty guns are left empty to rot.....  Real shame considering how they can turn a battle.

I found something that could be very to do with mortar ammunition...
Trowing mortar shells like if it was a grenade ! Like in Saving Private Ryan (after 40seconds)

Could be very cool to use this when in a desesperated situation.

No idea if its possible.  I assume the fuse is armed by the shock of fireing, but would remain safe if dropped onto the floor or something.  Thus you'd need to slam them down really hard, but you'd also have to be careful that you didn't set the firing charge off.

I agree only if mortars would be overheat if you fire too rapidly.

actually, I find limited ammo for arty pieces @ bases are rather annoying, well, it is just tedious work to refill the guns instead of balance

a way to not have limited ammo yet limiting spam is maybe make mortars like Machine guns, that you have like 30 shells in your magazine, after you fired 30 shells it takes a minute for you to refill the mortar, if the mortar is in main base, it should have infinite number of reloads.

I don't think this is even possible. Quote from wikipedia:

Quote
A mortar is relatively simple and easy to operate. A modern mortar consists of a tube into which gunners drop a shell. A firing pin at the base of the tube detonates the propellant and fires the shell

So if you hit the shell it flies from your hand.

Saving Private Ryan was a good film, but it pretty much got torn to pieces for all of its inaccuracies -- one of the most glaring being that you could use mortar shells as grenades.

A mortar firing 6 times very fast in a short space of time is the same balance as a mortar that fires constantly but slowly. You could make it so that if you fired it fast it wasn't accurate i.e. Bombardment (something you don't want landing on the same spot).

Someone spots a base and you fire, fire, fire, fire, fire, fire! You hit all over the place and you either get something or you don't. A form of Commander artillery in effect but harder to use and not as powerful or long lasting.

Chances of friendly fire would also mean it wouldn't always be the best option.

But then if say someone spots a pak you zero in and try to hit it accurately.

Also the reason people leave arty pieces rusting away is because no one gives spots :(
Even after you ask lots of times those other 31 people don't seem to carry binoculars...

I'm an avid user of the Packered Mortar Gun and its HE rounds in the First Strike mod, and I've caught so much flak for it that it's a joke :D. It's widely regarded as a "noob tube" even at considerable range and indirect fire, when it takes far more skill to hit things with it than, say, with a sniper rifle.

Yes, being hit with a mortar is frustrating for some reason. I agree, I've been subjected to barrages, too. So letting them fire volleys would probably just make people even more upset, and also reduce the skill it took to use them as you could zero in on enemies more easily. It's probably more historically correct, though (I believe mortars are kind of a "spray-and-pray" weapon), but I think it's just going to lead to frustration. Not necessarily against the idea of overheat, though.

yes it was,actually. a yank near anzio, I thought, used them as grenades and he earned the nickname "Commando" for that. Further more, he succeeded in repelling a German attack with only his BAR and the mortar shells.

It never happened, as hitting there would simply spark the ignition, launching the mortar shell out of your hand and into the air, taking your hand/fingers with it  ::)

I know the location of one not to far away, i was standing 30meters away from it once, but it was on the other side of a canal and it was cold and windy so i did not go closer to have a better look. Maybe i should do so, take pictures so it could be made, would be awesome. 60 rpm 81mm Mortars FTW :D
