General Discussion / Re: Soldier models - what's your take?
« on: 11-04-2010, 06:04:39 »

This is the Uncanny Valley, and it is one reason why making playermodels, and especially faces, is so damn hard. Human acceptance of a human likeness increases as the realism increases up to a point; if the human likeness is very human but barely off, a massive negative feedback is triggered, resulting in a revulsion effect in the viewer. If the faces are off, even slightly, it is immediately apparent and very ugly, which is why sitting in the back of an APC in FH1 staring another player in the eye was profoundly unsettling. Or, as my good buddy Freddy Nietzsche would say, “If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”

I gave blood on Friday, and they said my iron count was "Awesome." It was so high that they, with my permission, hooked me up to a big machine with pumps and whirring sounds and a monitor and took a double-red-blood-cell donation. Then they gave me chocolate milk and cookies, and furnished me with an excuse not to do physical exercise for several days, and they gave me a sticker.

I also participated in the annual Popsicle stick bridge contest. Mine massed out at 95 grams and held a bit more than 200 pounds, which is cool because its much more than I predicted but kinda a bummer because it fell about 1.38 pounds per gram short of the winner.

From near the current day, following Russia's fall after the cold war:

Nuclear Submarine K-118 in its final resting place next to an Aircraft Carrier mooring in Russia. I don't know the condition of the reactor and fuel supply.

A: The engine.

Guys, try to keep the spam down. I think I hear Flippy getting restless.

Oh yeah, happy thing. Got a practice essay rewrite back, went from 15/45 to 45/45. Also got a 99/100 on an essay on Social Darwinism.

the way in which Russia fell was by no means predetermined. They could have executed a more successful transition, IMO, such as the way that China became more capitalistic.

*Sigh*

Define fall. Being superseded does not count as falling, and the way in which Russia fell was by no means predetermined. They could have executed a more successful transition, IMO, such as the way that China became more capitalistic.

Yeah, we will not stay on top forever, but the parallels are deceiving.

I'm sorry Tolga, I can't side with you. Granted, most of the Turks I know have been nice and the greeks assholes, and granted, I have a soft spot for Anatolian geography, and granted, I do support the Anatolian Shepherd being made an official breed, and granted, any country with that much fresh bread cannot be all bad but...Have you ever tasted the sweet nectar of the gods that is Baklava?!

Wait...wiki wiki wiki...

Baklava is of Turkish origin! My God Tolga, Turkey really is an absolutely flawless country! It's like the Greek pantheon of gods come down to earth, except with less rape and incest and more baking!

...You heard the sarcasm there, right? Dripping with sarcasm?

Yeah, no, I'm sick and tired of people forecasting our impending demise. Why is our demise impending, because although we are richer than ever China is less poor than it used to be? Because our debt, higher than ever, is still half that of countries that are perfectly fine?

Honestly, my biggest worry is the education system we have. Mainly, the teachers' unions and teachers' tenure.
