This coming Saturday, July 2nd, the World at War Tournament invites you to take part in a another special event: Naval Combat & brand new custom maps.

The WaW team has prepared several custom maps ranging from naval and air combat off the Island of Malta to the hills of the German Alps.

Take to sea on our three naval maps and experience the awesome firepower of Battlecruisers such as the H.M.S. Hood and battleships such as the H.M.S. Prince of Wales and the fearsome Bismarck. Take the helm and command the ship and her guns or defend her against air attack by using the many anti-aircraft batteries. Counter the heavy ships with Cruisers, destroyers, torpedo equipped PT boats, Schnellboats, or stalk your prey from the depths with Submarines. Seasick? Don't worry. Sink those beasts from the air or from Coastal gun emplacements.

Battle it out in the streets of Maupertus in Normandy or liberate fields of Moerbrugge in Belgium.

Event Features:
Battle on at least 6 exciting and unique custom maps
- Tyrrhenian Sea: Fight for control of several small islands with heavy air and naval support.
- Sea of Aland: Epic naval and aerial engagement in the middle of the ocean
- Supplies for Malta: Win the map by escorting a convoy of supply vessels to the port of  Valletta against heavy German raids
- Moerbrugge: Liberate the Belgian town of Moerbrugge from German occupation
- Maupertus: Fight for control of Maupertus, a small town near Cherbourg in Normandy (based on Darkest Hour Map)

Utilize all kinds of new equipment and vehicles
- Custom vehicle such as Möbelwagen Flakpanzer, Coastal Defence Guns
- New aircraft such as the P-38 Lightning, BF-110, ME-262, Ju88, B25 and more

Yeah, my bad. Moerbrugge is in Belgium.

I added a google maps picture so you can see the actual area the map is based off.

Steal it, kick him in the nuts hard enough and you should be able to play with it for at least an hour and a half.

Wow!  Very impressive.  I also see the He 111 in one of the shots.  Can't wait to play.  They only thing that I did not like about last time was the nose cam on the planes.  It feels really cheap and the cockpits look too good to be wasted.

I agree. Nose cams are for newbs who can't dogfight without an aid... tisk tisk...

Agreed... even though the nose cams improve my flying skills by 100%.

EDIT: I'll try to be there... can't promise anything

I'll be there fore as long as possible. I'm curious about the Malta map especially. The Google maps reference is nice :)

Btw: by underlining the words "Saturday before the event" in the mainpost, you suggest that the maplink is available from the week before the event (the Saturday before the event). Might be confusing for some.
Title: Re: World at War Naval Warfare and Custom Map Day - Saturday July 2nd 2011
Post by: [WaW]TC|Avrojet on 29-06-2011, 11:06:38
Changed the wording about the map release to "Saturday, a few hours before the event is scheduled to start."

Nose cams are here to stay for all WaW events and battles. Nobody forces you to use them. If you want to have the cockpit blocking your view, by all means use that view.

Indeed, we have the HE-111, Ju88 and more. There will even be a few more surprises.

More screenshots and stuff will be added soon.

Almost everything new is actually just the models from FH1 ported to FH2.  :)

Most of the models are probably below FH2 standards, though.

I know nothing about polygons and the likes, but damn, I wouldn't mind some of these ports to release in FH2, and fix them up in later patches. Will try to make it. The Italian maps were a lot of fun a while back. Watch out tonight guys, it's been a while since I've flown. The Storch on Lebisey doesn't really count :D

The Malta map was nice, good idea.

I'm surprised everything went to well. Really good job from Stubby at the end.

Sad we could not get Sea of Aland working. We didn't get to see the HMS hood or the Bismarck today. But I loved seeing the Eugen and the PoW light up with all their guns and those massive battles.

Supply Malta?  ;D
No really, they were supposed to protect their flower-class transport ships, which reduced the axis ticket count when they managed to get into the Port of Valata.
I was really positively surprised how much fun that map made and that the mechanics played out. There have been posts about this in the past, but let's see if we can't bugger some one long enough for a second look.  ;D

At first I crashed to desktop on Malta, but when I re-unpacked the map it worked. Nice event! I really loved the Malta map! I was in a Schnellboot most of the time, getting kill assists for letting my MG gunners gun down allied planes like mad. Torpedoing ships by plane was hard, maybe I flew too low...

Alpenfestung was fun to see, but it is not my kind of map and although it really went well, I didn't enjoy it as much as the other maps.

Moerbrugge was a cool map too, I had fun walking through the high vegetation, listening to Ride of the Valkyrie to locate the Schwimmwagen :) Only thing not so good was that our team ran over the enemy so quickly.

Then after Malta we played Tyrrhenian Sea and I already knew that map. It was improved a bit on the MG sights and all. Had some fun naval battles with the Fletcher. Then the serverswitch went on and I had to go do different stuff.

Thanks WaW!

After plugging my brother's Saitek Cyborg joystick and trying flying some planes, I found out that it's impossible to use a plane with a joystick... The sensitivity is so high that I had big difficulties with aiming... And I don't know how I can change it...  >:(

So, on maps like Thyrreanian Sea and Supplies to Malta was quite boring for me... Ok, I could use ships, but when it turns out after spawning on ship that all guns are manned and soon you magically dies as a TK for ship driver - it must have been really frustrating for him...

But other 3 maps I really enjoyed!  :)

Yeah I'm having this problem on my old Microsoft Sidewinder joystick.  Perhaps anyone can suggest something?
This is literally the only game I use a joystick on.

Hmm I suppose I should be careful what I wish for.  A large part of my problem is the horrible deadzone adjustment I seem to need.  The Windows joystick calibration doesn't do much for that.

Is it correct that the issue is more pronounced on these custom maps with the altered flight system?

But how can I set my joystick sensitivity? In my operating system I can only set deadzones... Maybe by setting deadzones will help me... Sb told me that it's possible to set sensitivity in game, but it also relates to mouse sensitivity... But changing it also didn't help me...

Managed to play today three of these.

Supplies for Malta

This has the most potential IMO, even though it still highlights the unsolved problems with naval combat (accidentally exiting position on a moving ship/boat will kill you if one of the boat's vertical hitboxes catches you). Though once you aware of them, the becomes great fun. The excitement whether your torpedo actually hits and damages the PoW before your Schnellboot is blown to pieces is priceless, and the combined air/naval battle just feels right and in line with FH2.

Too bad I didn't get to experience the other two naval maps.

Alpenfestung

Runway texture flickers on and off at the German airbase, and while you're there the game lags like there's no to-mor-mor-mor-row. Some of the defenses look a little out of place, and the geography has IMO too abrupt height differences in some places gameplay-wise (not everywhere, it's the Alps after all). Also, despite ravines with steep walls and scarce (destroyable) bridges crossing them the gameplay is still not "channeled" into a fight for the "frontline", but becomes a chaotic backcapping fest where you easily become FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUstrated when you realize you have to take a long detour to return to that position. Would benefit from pushmode and slightly flattened geography + rethought defensive positions.

Moerbrugge

Good for 128+ players, not so good with less players (and even less so in public where people will not attack the flags in "proper" order). HUEG map with flags far apart from each other with little action or places of interest inbetween. Cobra suddenly feels compact and even the Farmhouse there seems close to the town compared to distances here. Especially the flag all alone in the northwestern corner... really? Long distances to and from mainbase mean that tanks become a valuable asset to be protected, but again, pushmode would be beneficial to prevent the Schwimmwagen/Jeep rushfrenzy and running back and forth without ever seeing the enemy. Dunno.... the town is nicely done, would perhaps benefit more from severely limiting the maparea to concentrate the fighting there.

I have a Saitek Cyborg evo which is, blimey, about six years old.  The Cyborg is a such great stick for general flying, being robust, reliable, amazingly programmable and has adjustable parts for left handers.  I can't and don't want to replace it except with another one.

Adjusting the Mouse Settings sensitivity in Aircraft controls has a profound effect and its not like the mouse gets affected anywhere else.

I've also maintained my Cyborg by lightly greasing the ball joint, spring and its floating plate at the base of the stick shaft.

The other place to alter sensitivity of Cyborg axes is in the Saitek Profile Editor.  Any of them can be set to Directional Axis mode which then shows sensitivity sliders.

The dead zones only need to be wide if the jitter on the axes is actually affecting the controls in game.

To be honest, they are the response is that sloppy in BF2 that a small amount of axis flicker makes bugger all difference most of the time.

My pet project was working out how to use the POV hat for mouse look ... without having to press a separate key.  It can be done using a Cyborg, with some minor controls.con editing and setting up the right Saitek profile.

Settiing it up is not for the faint hearted ... but mission accomplished and it's great!

That's for another topic perhaps.

Interesting setup. Lots of tense moments of hide and seek within the archipelago, not to mention wholesale slaughter in the air. Even die-hard footsloggers will find something to do here! Good fun.

Good times today, killing Kelmola 5 times in a row in various schnellboots, shooting down planes with the cargoship main gun, and trying to avoid torpedos. Made it into the harbour with 1½ bars HP left, barely missing Lainers torpedo & shooting him dead by the entrance.

The video is very nice, as allways when someone shows FH2 stuff ;D
The only think I would change, is the music - it made me laugh. It reminds me of some old Baywatch stuff or something like that. Only thing that is missing, is David Hasselhoff ;D

A little tip (not only to you): You can't spot enemy units via the comrose, as in BF2. You need a Binocular, and then you can spot with hitting "Q" (by defaut) and selecting the kind of the target. I see alot of people spotting/spamming on the public servers on the wrong way. But finaly you can't see anything on the minimap. ;)

It was suppose to be funny, at 3 am I was able to either laugh or fall asleep on my keyboard and since I wanted to stay to the end, I found a Baywatch theme song :P. I'll do the "serious" version, with approperiate music soon.

Just have to thank the WaW guys for putting this on. I had a great deal of fun with these maps - really brought back the FH1 memories a lot. We may not having moveable carriers or guys being able to run around on deck but still even with those caveats the naval warfare is surprisingly a ton of fun. Good job on Malta it is a ton of fun on that map with the objectives. Keep up the good work.

Models & textures are from FH1/BF1942, but all the collision meshes had to be redone, ships had to be completely recoded, and in some cases they've also been reskinned. It was a huge undertaking and I'm still surprised we managed to pull it off with only one server crash (that I know of)  ;D

So, it's been a while since our last Naval event.
FH2.4 caused a few problems on the maps but they've been sorted out.

You can expect a new public naval map pack and event in the next few weeks with new maps included.

If you don't want to wait you can experience the thrill of amphibious beach landings and destroyer gun and AA support today.

WaW's playing our last battle of the current 23rd campaign today on the most iconic map of the Battlefield series: Wake Island

The map is packed with great equipment and features: Fully functional destroyers, submarines, LCVPs, new aircraft (P38 with rockets, ME262, Bf110 Torpedo, etc) and more.
We're also proud to be premierung our newest gamplay feature - deployable defences. The SL is able to place static defences such as sand bags and tank traps to help fortifiy a position. These can be blown up by explosives.

Apart from all that equipment we obviously feature exciting and coordinated teamwork during our battles.

So, don't hesitate. Visit our site www.bfewaw.com and sign up to the forums and to the campaign to be able to play in these epic battle on the sunny beaches of Wake.
