Any Violinists here?
« on: 22-03-2012, 00:03:29 »
I was thinking of getting into playin' the fiddle, but I don't know much about it. First off: I'm left-handed. I've gone through a few websites with no definitive answer on weather or not a left-handed violin should be bought or not.
I'll add on to the issues as I think of them, my brain's a bit fried to think of them all.

I'm sure there's a music school in your area.
The teacher will have all the answer to all your questions.

Cheers!

You should have started 10 years ago.

7-year-olds are known for their musical proficiency and appreciation for violins.

...besides, I was playing the Baritone back then. :I

Hi, I am one, although I seldomly play these days.

I think you should go for the lefthanded violin, although I have no experience with them as I'm righthanded myself. But I have been playing in several orchestras and the lefties always enjoyed their lefthanded instruments.

When you're younger, learning to play an instrument will go faster, and it will be less frustrating :)

Baritone's an easy horn to play. Stringed instruments are a whole other ball-game, though...not sure If I'll be able to hold the string down hard enough to play a chord properly, I never could on the acoustic guitar.

well its very rare that violins play more then one note (so called double stops), so i wouldnt worry there.

i agree with glamrock, find a teacher.

That's what merciless parents are for. Luckily  mine realized my one musical talent was pretending-to-sing at the lower classes music class. 5-year old Fuchs was one badass who hated music.

If you are an ex-violinist, I might be interested in the violin case of yours if its old enough. I might want to get one in order to store a typewriter inside it.

I don't exactly know, how it is concerning violins, but I am a lefthander too and play guitar. But I still play the normal rightander and can't do shit with a lefthander guitar. I think you should first test what gives you a better feeling in a music store or in a music school. I have to admit, that I am more a "mixed hander". I only write with the left hand. I have no lefthander mouse or what ever you can get and my strong arm is the rigth one. Just give it a try, maybe you will be surprised.  ;)

I am not a violinist, but I am an amateur pianist so yes I know a bit about instruments. I also played a little bit of violin (tried it for a couple of months for fun).

Left or Right handed does not really matter in the long run if you got a teacher who knows how to instruct a left hander. I know someone who could play violin okay despite being a left hander.

I do not know what is a left-hander violin, a violin is a violin and you should not go for stupid variations - that would only make your life harder as most teachers use the "regular" violin. And violin is immensely hard to learn without a teacher.

Violin is an instrument that require an extraordinary dedication to the instrument. Your tone would suck in the very beginning, your parents/friends/relatives won't be able to tell whether you are butchering livestock or making music, and your neighbours would want to murder you for messing their ears up. But worry not, you WILL get better if you keep going on, and it is very rewarding (and definitely something to be proud of) to be able to play an instrument well as it shows every second of effort and love you put in your instrument.

Still, it depends on your goal, if you want to become the greatest violinist on planet earth, probably you should kill that idea if you are over 10. Remember, making music, is the ultimate goal of a musician, not showing off insane skillz (though that is a part of ...haha).
