The fog thing is something used by tankers as well. Well, good tankers.

Basically, you look to the side so what you want to look at is at the edge of your screen. You can see a little bit farther into the fog from the side of your screen. You then need to make an educated guess on where to fire, but in this case the JUs are a pretty big target to guess at.
