Title: [F|H]&[762] PRESENT - FH2 Custommap Event: Wacht am Rhein
Post by: x4fun ODIUM on 27-12-2013, 15:12:14
(http://www.762-ranking.de/_images/BestOfWachtAmRheinEvent2.gif)

After long, tough battles fought in winterly Belgium, Luxemburg and France,
the Forgotten Honor campaign "Wacht am Rhein" has ended.

Many hours of mapping, testing, feedback and correction have gone into the creation of these custom maps. That is why [762] and [F|H] have sat together, decided to take a pick and make the best of them public.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oneHSnZZzwc&feature=em-share_video_user (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oneHSnZZzwc&feature=em-share_video_user)

From the 31st of December, Server [762]RANKED #4 FH2 v2.45 [64+]
will include the following maps into its daily rotation:

FHT Operation Nordwind
FHT Herrlisheim Outskirts
FHT Advance on Foy
FHT Elsenborn Ridge

You can download an installer .exe here:
Wacht am Rhein map pack (http://762-ranking.de/fh2stats/downloads/mappacks/BestOfWachtAmRheinMappack.exe)
Just run it and the maps will be installed for you.

Should the installer not work for you (Vista users):
1. Download this file and unpack it:  Wacht am Rhein map pack for manual installation (http://fh1.forgottenhonor.com/hosting/fh2/fht_mappack/fht_mappack_wacht_am_rhein.zip)
2. You will receive a folder named "fh2".
Open your game folder ( e. g. C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods).
3. You should see 2 folders ("bf2" and "fh2").
Copy the "fh2" folder that you have just unpacked into the \mods folder.
4. If you are being asked to include or overwrite, choose "yes, to all".
5. For former [F|H] campaign players: go into your "...\mods\fh2" folder. Delete the "fht" subfolder.

Feel free to comment, criticise and vote @www.762-ranking.de.
The teams of [762] and [F|H] wish you a good start into 2014!

It's a weather report. Odium expects it will be snowing soon, which is, given the fact that it is December, no real surprise.

I believe these are custom maps which going to kill last active servers of FH2 because x4fun ODIUM is probably planning to add them to the map rotation and players will be forced to download them or they will eventually stop playing if they will find them to be even worse (because as we all know, stock maps are shit) than official maps. According to what he keeps talking in game there is some 762 community autopatcher made by rogue FH2 dev which will automaticaly download custom maps they want distribute among the players.

Everything's clear now. Info added to FH2's facebook fanpage!

Some of these look pretty, but I hope you wont make it like what Jan said.

The screens looks nice, :) nice atmospheres (especially that second pic.)

I'd like to get some more info on this tho. In terms of addressing what Jan said.

Such hatred. Wow. Amazing.
Do you believe all you say, Jan? :)

For the positive minded players (non-Jan-Kurator), feel free to speculate, more Info is coming soon! :)

I don't see why custom maps would kill the last servers. They didn't for FH1, and they probably won't for FH2. (In fact I'd say they extended the life of FH1 tenfold).

As long as the server clearly says that it uses custom content and advertises a link to download it, I see it as a nice way to spice up the old boring rotations... (although I guess that adding more 32p versions into the mix would be nice as well, and would have the same effect without players having to download stuff.

And of course, the maps need to be glitch free and thouroughly tested, stuff like floating walls and players falling through ground does not belong to the public servers, as often seen in the hastily prepared maps for the tournaments...

Could not agree more. I loved the fan mappacks in FH 0.7!

Last Fan Mappack to 0.7 was brilliant. Shame no server ran those maps for more than couple of days and in special occasions because nobody had downloaded them.

Stashuv Area, Soletschnogorsk and whatever_it_was_called_PHL_0.7_version were my definite favorites. Also Cretan Village was fantastic.

Very nice images.   I think new content is a great things as it keeps things alive and I would sure love to do a video on some new maps (may bring more players to/back to game).   The only question/concern is how map files are shared.   I noticed you guys don't use a redirect server so when people join the server the map is automatically downloaded....is this being considered?   Also something that was a good idea at RO2 forums was to create one thread where custom maps were listed with a link to download site.   Consolidating in one location made things a lot easier and increased numbers on servers running custom maps.   Best of luck look forward to seeing these in action.  Cheers!

Well fan maps can be fun. 8) I always think there are a bunch of maps that deserve to be tested out by the community to see how they play on a public server (it's a great way to do some quick stress testing). I think a lot of 'diamonds in the rough' can be found this way and improved upon.

But like shake said, introducing custom maps has to be done right. It should be easy for players to find & DL the maps, otherwise it'll be discouraging to new ppl.

I don't see why custom maps would kill the last servers...
You answered yourself in next paragraph. But to add to that - not many players will download their autopatcher (as it unfortunately was the case with mumble - this community is too lazy) and people won't get custom maps automatically what will result in massive disconnects. And even if maps will be of worse quality than stock maps, people will have to download them if they want to play any FH2 because there is only one server left. I'm afraid they will be server killers. Custom maps may be fun on some events but not on everyday play, so let's hope it will be some event. Anyway, I can understand people making maps for tournaments, because gameplay differs much very often but if there are any talented mappers there, why they don't apply to FH2 team? With help of experienced mappers and testers many custom maps could be so awesome... but they don't.

This was actually the only good quality fan mappack (Cretan Village and Todtenbruch are my favourite FH maps even nowadays) but most of the custom maps are unfortunately badly designed. Afaik maps in Forgotten Hope Fan Mappack no 6. were made in cooperation with FH devs (and released via FH main page) by people like Lili Marlene, Knoffhoff, Mr_Cheese and few other who were future FH2 devs.

Well fan maps can be fun. 8) I always think there are a bunch of maps that deserve to be tested out by the community to see how they play on a public server (it's a great way to do some quick stress testing). I think a lot of 'diamonds in the rough' can be found this way and improved upon.
I have nothing against it, but problem is that no one has time to polish those diamonds and original mappers usually don't cooperate, because they act like their work is perfect, they ignore feedback, don't accept criticism or simply don't care anymore and move to other projects.

I can totally understand some of the concerns about fan maps on 762. But I'll wait until Odium gives us all the info before I forum an opinion.

Perhaps an AutoPatcher would be in order for FH2. you can release stuff like new maps and vehicles for existing factions in installments.

Are there any other tournament based maps other than Olympus in the game? I don't really understand all this cry for new maps in the mod. There's already around 40 maps, which you can combine into a shitton of combinations. That's not enough?
Title: Re: ????

If I remember right, Villers-Bocage and St.Lo were both in WaW before they got into dev builds.

Post by: jan_kurator on 27-12-2013, 18:12:38
I don't remember very well but what about Cobra? Wasn't it turnament map too at some point? Anyway, these maps prove that we only need patient and dedicated mappers willing to cooperate with the rest of the team and we can see many new maps in the future.

Possible yes. I have no ideia what it is.

And there is only one tournament that hosts FH2 campaign and that is ForgottenHonor.

PS: Odium. You forgot to deliver the white envelope.

Worse than 1st Bardia or Aberdeen? :D

Anyway, these maps aren't hard to find. But I only see 4 out of the 7 that I wanted to get my hands on ;)

The incorporation should be announced to the players a long time before.  Shoutout messages in game on the server on a regular basis. Also the server name should be renamed to include some info of the change

Can't see how more custom maps on a server is a bad thing, it will keep things fresh (and keep people playing) until the next update rolls around.

Inb4 "How can it be fresh if it has bad gameplay (even though I have not played the map)"

leave Bardia alone!
Title: Re: ????
Post by: Ts4EVER on 28-12-2013, 16:12:22
Bardia is relatively well designed, at least for vBF2. Due to the high weapon accuracy and killing power in FH2, the main base is too vulnerable.

Updated. (This forum code is a pain in the *** if you want to do anything but plain text.
Is there any way to include a youtube video?) Check the first post, guys!

I believe these are custom maps which going to kill last active servers of FH2 because x4fun ODIUM is probably planning to add them to the map rotation [...]

It's an experiment. it can go wrong but also a few new faces lure on the server. So stay loose and just come to the server and play with.

A server is indeed obtained in the original.

Correction, fht subfolder is in the fh2 folder, not in the mods folder AFAIK. You should change that in the first post.

Also the download link is broken... I think it's because of 2 extra quotation marks in the address
Title: Re: ????
Post by: x4fun ODIUM on 30-12-2013, 19:12:16
Hey Lucky,

apparently hitting "save" not just saves the text but randomly adds " signs,
and "=http" where it is not needed. DL links are working now, please check.

About the location of the fht minimod folder - it is in the fh2 subfolder,
you are right, I'll edit that.

Thanks for helping out!

You maybe wanna give the maps another look I found a few errors.
Foy has this MG thats usless because it shoots the bunker wall.

Elsenborn Ridge has several, I'm just pointing out four.
Theres a floating gun.
Floating bench
Broken glass
(http://i1308.photobucket.com/albums/s615/Chad1992AC/screen011_zps81516a78.jpg)
And shrubs in a Tent.
Most of these bugs are just hard on the eyes, but dont affect gameplay.  They don't really bother me just thought I save you from all the bitching on the server.

FHT Herrlisheim Outskirts (the former Operation Sonnenwende) rocks. Obviously, the best quality map from all of those and the only map which doesn't look like it's in its early beta stage but it isn't bug free. I would kill with fire the rest but I will bite my tongue and post my feedback in few days on your forum.

Good morning,

@Tankbuster: The server is online with the 4 maps now!

@Jimi: This is the maplist as of now, what it shows you is that there are 4 FHT maps out of 41 rotation (4+37). Mind you, we may restart the [762]#4 once or twice in the early hours of today, as long as player numbers are low, to make minor adjustments. Every time we restart, the randomizer makes a new rotation, so what you see is a snapshot-until-next-restart. :)

We already see is players trying to join and not having the mappack (they drop). Others already have the map pack. That is why we only wanted to have 4 out of 41, so the kicks due to lacking the map are not so frequent (only when one of them is playing).

Spread the word :)

I'll have to say that I agree with Jan. I took a walk around the maps and Herrlisheim looks most promising of the four (not that it says much), the rest look like fucking shit.

I'll have to see how the actual game play is before I fully judge them. Not that I'm expecting much of them.

Nordwind tries to get away with it by copy&pasting places from Falaise Pocket.  ;D

What's the point of keeping such small maps like Tunis, PHL, PDH, Falaise, Sfakia in the map rotation of 128 players server?  ???

That is alright. Tankbuster is not my real name as well.

With help of experienced mappers and testers many custom maps could be so awesome... but they don't.

Lies. I dont need no testers to create an awesome map. Need i tell you about bloody gulge?

Lol Flippy I was wondering at what point somebody would find the Falaise stuff :-) Time was the major issue we had in our campaign mapping with our mapping team being stretched horribly thin, so.... not my proudest achievement but the map played really nicely anyway.
Yeah, I heard the Norway comment already during our campaign. Probably an idea to pursue. tournament maps rarely reach the level of details the stock maps have for sure, we simply lack the manpower and time for it,  but hopefully the gameplay ameliorates this.

Nice maps, but.

Elsenborn Ridge could seriously use pushmode or even sector push though, even with 110 players it's small fireteams running in circles around each other all over the map backcapping all the day. Also, while steep hills being impassable is realistic, public roads being impassable is not (because BF2 vehicles cannot into torque), see pic for example (click to enlarge):
(http://i.imgur.com/MWccSbml.jpg) (http://imgur.com/MWccSbm)
Don't get me wrong, it's an ossum map, but should probably culminate on the attack on the railyard and Castle Wolfenstein instead of said places changing ownership all the time to lone ninjas.

Herrlisheim could also use some push, now the flags are all over the place and in public play you have separate battles being waged uncoordinated, or in most cases, most flags are simply ignored while people flock to where the action is.

Nordwind, the cluster of three flags in the center gets all the attention, the outlying flags are a sideshow for backcappers.

Foy is probably the best of the bunch as is, though the cluster of flags right next to each other in the beginning is a bit meh.

Also, lightmaps in all maps have some funky features, especially in indoors. It's nice to see that the lights are on even though the town is ruined and there's nobody home (klik für Lebensraum):
(http://i.imgur.com/rQjA40kl.jpg) (http://imgur.com/rQjA40k)
Indoors, this is not as disturbing, but when you run into tents that are brightly lit from the OUTSIDE too...

---

HOWEVER, to all the naysayers claiming mappacks kill FH2, NYANA NYANA NYANA, 110 players was the highest I spotted on these custom maps.

I'm quite disappointed with maps added by admins, because they are of very bad quality even in comparision to other custom maps posted here in the past (except Op. Sonnenwende). Unfortunately I'm too busy with real life problems now and most likely for whole next week to give you proper and detailed feeback but those Italian campaing maps are good examples of something unique and original as they are based on completely new front. I can't understand what was the reason of picking up these maps and no such gems like Bloody Gulch, FHT Battle of Britain, St Mere Eglise, or St. Fromond (and "hurr durr run your own servers jan" is not an anwser). I'm asking seriously now, was there any kind of technical problems with picking other maps? Original mappers didn't aprove? Argument of these particular maps being tested doesn't convince me because they look like they're in their early beta stages (maps are too big, there are no lightmaps indoors, dozens of floaters, strange statics placement, weird road connections, a lot of empty places, lack of details, boring gameplay and HEAVY LAGS) I hope you will replace these maps with some other, better ones in the future if you really need any custom maps in your rotation.

Jan, check this thread, it may answer some of your questions:
http://www.762-ranking.de/forum/showthread.php?1062-Best-of-Wacht-am-Rhein-comment-ask-for-help-criticise-vote-here

As for the rest, I only bring people together and try to get the best I can.

IMHO Elsenborn is too large, but it had to be given a try.
Herrlisheim is nice, I liked it in the campaign and asked (!) for it.
Battle of foy was a request of mine, too.
Operation Nordwind, too, maybe that one could use the pushmode again.

Pushmode was removed on all maps because the mappers of [F|H] thought that public players would not follow it like the organised players of a tournament and thereby make the map lock up at some point.

I have to ask (!) [F|H] for what they are willing (!) to give us. They want to play their campaigns, and rightfully so, reserve some maps for their next campaign. That is only just, they need attraction for new players just as we do. Find me workable maps that are not copyrighted, claimed by someone and of good quality and we will consider adding them to the rotation.

At the moment we have these 4, we will play these 4 for a while and listen to the player's feedback.
2 days ago we had 128 players online. As of now we have 108 players. So as far as I'm concerned, I have achieved what I wanted, to get some players back to FH2 and bridge the time to the next patch. Who knows what will happen in a few months.

Pushmode was removed on all maps because the mappers of [F|H] thought that public players would not follow it like the organised players of a tournament and thereby make the map lock up at some point.
B-b-b-but pushmode would channel even the most random pubber into coordination?

I mean, for some maps pushmode is not necessary (such as Chiara's Boobs, ahem, Giarabub). But the requirement is then that either the area is rather compact or players are somewhat railroaded into certain pathways, Miteriya Ridge on El Al being a good example that feels natural, forces to focus without feeling forced (unlike Ramelle). Meuse 1944, this works too because the flags are all relatively close to each other so fights "flow" naturally from one to another even without push.

But a large map such as Elsenborn with no "natural" obstacles and a large number of flags all over the place... it's like Cobra before Farm and Watermill flags were changed to sector push.

I can agree with you on the push mode Kelmola, some of the maps would do better with it.

We consider the whole affair as a start. The goal is to work together with the neighbouring communities such as [F|H] , !@! , WaW and their mappers to get good custom map packs together, to attract new and old players to FH2.

*yawn* some words from the mapping team lead at FHT, just got back from vacation from denmark and quite tired.
One must not measure our tournament maps against the same benchmarks as the stock maps or most of the custom maps when it comes to call it "completeness" or beta stage.
Whereas stock maps are done over a rather long period of time (I assume that from the general update frequency of FH2) and most custom maps are done mostly by one person without any external factors like deadlines etc (also an assumption here by me), we at FHT hold a campaign twice or thrice a year with about 16-18 maps in it.
Therefore, we do have very tight timeframes in which we can do our mapping work, and we do have to work on many maps in a very short time. And if we fuck up, the tournament suffers, and then the admins suffer :-)
Therefore, we unfortunately often do not reach the level of detail or work out flaws (of which we often are very aware believe me), simply cause there is not sufficient time. And of course we always have too few mappers, so feel invited if anybody thinks he can contribute :-)

Also, we try to focus on the gameplay. That does not mean that eliminating every floating object or adding nice statics all over the place or making nice textures and under/overgrowth is not in our focus, but our tournaments thrive on good gameplay, not on the last 15 % of work put into a map.
The real work we have to do is balancing, which is I dare say probably the harder job. Every map that did not work out good in our campaigns did so because it was unbalanced equipment/kit wise, not out of call it "visual" issues.
Probably on the contrary up to a point. Look at Juin 44 from den75, which he allowed us to use in Wacht am Rhein. I converted it into a winter map, added some flags in the outer terrain, really beautiful map, detailed, and well thought out.
But: A lot of players had horrible lags in the city due to the high number of statics in the map :-( I think I have to twiddle some there, cause the map is really good and for those withouth lags it was a pleasure to play.
This of course does not excuse certain errors. Yes, there are some serious flaws. Unusable MGs and floaters are annoying, on Elsenborn the roads are still a major issue. Blame me as I did the map, but it was my 1st :-) I only got into mapping 03/2013, so don't be too hard on me  ;D

Regarding push and flag layout:
We do not use push in the tournament. We tried it on two maps this time: Bloody Gulch and Stoumont.
Both times it failed horribly because in organized teamplay, reducing the attackable flags to only two spells disaster, especially as we work with rally points instead of SL spawning which give another boost to the defending team. Push with 40-50 guys against two flags where all 40-50 defenders are organized in squads and follow the same orders. It's a meatgrinder.

Nordwind: it was said that the three center flags get all the attention and the rest lies barren. Again here, in the campaign this was one of the best maps with action all over the place because no flag is ignored. There may be lull at a flag for some time, but still it will always see action. This is the difference in comparison to public.

But i concur that Nordwind and Elsenborn in the 64 layer should have push for public. We might even implement it, only mapdata stuff I'd say.
Both do have 32 and 16 layers with 5 flags each if somebody noticed, those would have probably been more fitting for public us. Next time probably.

And as Odium said, it's a start.

Finally back from some time away from my computer and I can't wait to try these maps out :)

The response seems a bit mixed but mostly on the good side and ppl seem to be enjoying the diversity, so kudos to the mappers FHT and 762 for giving this a go ;) So far it looks like it's been implemented well and you're getting players to DL and try the maps by mixing them in with official maps and I certainly think that's a good way to do it.

I had a look around the maps in a local server and Herrlisheim is def the golden boy when it comes to looks. ;D it's certainly feels the most polished of the 4. I hope it holds up when it comes to gameplay too. I'll reserve anymore judgments for when I get a few rounds in on these maps. Hope to see you guys there 8)

Yeah, I guess I did come a bit too late.
By the way, are the maps inspired by Band of Brothers? I mean, Sainte-Mère-Église, Brecourt Manor, Foy.
Are you lot still working on them, is there any ETA?
Anyways, I'd love to play those maps when they're done, right after I rename the bots to Hall, Guarnere, Luz, Lipton, Roe, Liebgott,...

P/S: I believe I won't be of much help to you, I've had (and lost) like 5-6 wrist watches so far. Though, my keys have always stuck around, in spite of me not a giving a slightest care about. And I reckon I won't be able to find that website I stumbled across the links now.

Atm we have to get the FHT tournament ready to work.
The mappers for that and the CMP are the same group.

CMP comes after, we hope maybe in March, that depends on the mappers'
spare time.
