Well the west fucked up those countries quite good. And now 'we' have to live with pirates.
There is an easy way to end it or a hard way. Wonder when the first humanitarian H-Bombs will fall.

The pirates claimed that the west do nothing when illegal fishing activity has destroyed local fishermen' livelihood. Even traded with those illegal fishers. So they resort to this way, gaining income from ransom money. Buying luxurious seaside villas, illegal guns, and better tools, and some money to rather small "Robin-Hood like charities". Well at least they treat prisoners okay.
Right now, "fair-trade" stuff becoming like a trend in western world, which the concept itself is also a slight BS... since they just buy from the same farmer with previously stable income, just double the price because some kind western people wanna see guys in 3rd world countries enjoy better life. The real poor farmers never really produce the quality that up to western demand's standard, so those extraordinarily poor people you see on TV never really benefited from every coffee/cosmetics/handcrafts you purchased just to give you a peace of mind or good night sleep. Not to mention that these idiot farmers usually buy unnecessary stuffs with excess money like cars, car mofications, stereos, HDTVs with no HD channel around. Their children usually die faster in related traffic accident (they usually ride bicycles, now they ride motorcycles). Apart from that, the only good thing i can think of the "fair trade" stuff has allowed these farmers to afford more hajj pilgrimage tour package and that kind of stuff.
"The west" is pretty synonymous to scapegoat as i understand it, but some westerns just capitalize from that idea.
