"people who don't get it".
Then you don't know the rivalry.

There are a few teams I would gladly see plummet to their ruin (Elfsborg, Syrianska, DIF and IFK Göteborg), I would never wish them any well in any cups.
If the price of my team having more of a shot at getting to the CL/EL is to have a rival team advance from the group stages, I wouldn't accept that price.

All this might be irrational.
But I'd say you're the one who doesn't get "it", the rivalry.
I see were you are trying to reach: "how can a 17 year old kid have such a thinking like this? why doesnt he wants to be like normal teens who whana get rich? and his plan actually makes sense, but is too damn revolutionary and good at the same time than is still doubthfull if it works..." - Damaso

Hehe, well, I think I do get it, as I'm in the middle of the Ajax-Feyenoord rivalry at work. I just think that my rivalry is closer to sanity ;)

The rivalry you and Rand00m are talking about, is that you hate the other club more than you like your own. When hate takes over, things tend to go wrong.

I wouldn't say that. The for my team is bigger, but the hate is a big part of it of course. I don't wish these teams any happiness, as I hate them.

Of course, it migth be irrational as it doesn't help me, but they still get happy and we only get the abstract thought of "we have a bigger chance next year, or in 2 years, to reach the EL". (then of course there's the discussion wether you value CL and EL, which I don't as much as other people)

I think the money gained in CL and EL is forgotten here. Getting to the CL group was estimated at getting 16 million last year, IIRC. 16 Million is Belgian competition is an awful lot, which means that if your rival team gets it, they have a budget that's a lot bigger to buy new better players than your team, and they will have better chances in your regular competition, which also means they'll get again a better ticket to international games next year, instead of your team.

Of course the money plays a role, but the amounts you mention are for winning the cup. Small clubs from small countries will never again win the CL, as long as football is directed by people like Blatter and Platini, who again stated recently that he is against all forms of technological help. This means the CL will become predictable as hell, like in the last five years. The variation in the semifinals, and even in the quarter finals is saddeningly low.

EL and CL are more interesting with more teams from different countries, so that's why I support all teams from my country, even the rival team. Because when your country loses enough points on the UEFA ranking, you lose a spot in the EL or CL, whiuch leads to less variation again.

Of course I'd rather see a team I don't really care about win a lot of games (like AZ Alkmaar this year) instead of the rival team, but if the rival team is the only team left in EL or CL, I'll hope they win most games, just so we get a better chance to get to EL or CL next year.

Does anyone around here need a car? I am selling a 2002 Ford Mustang with a 5-speed manual transmission. It has new tires, oil, coolant, battery, was garage-kept and I just re-placed the alternator. I am asking for $4.500,00. It looks and drives like new, odometer reading is at roughly 157.000,00. I would trade for a Ford Model A in drive-able and reliable condition, I will not mind cosmetic flaws. Will also sell to Canada.

If it was a '67 model we could have done business  :)

And what does mrs. NTH say about that?

About a '67 mustang for 4500 bucks? Would she really have anything to say?
I myself would settle for a '66.

You can find old mustangs for that price but what screws you Euros is the shipping, brokerage, customs, duties and of course the different petrol standards and ministry of transport certification.

I know this first hand as I used to work for a guy who shipped Harley davidsons to the Netherlands and sold them on to very rich (and generally naive) men and women across the continent.

We would buy scrapped motorcycles for less than a few thousand, rebuild them and then flip them for tens of thousands. It was shipping and environmental controls that was normally more expensive than the vehicle itself.

Had one of those many years ago when I still listened to rock. It was nothing special at all.
