looks pretty amazing, made by the team behind PR:ww2 and another team that started a ww2 mod for Squad.

Then the question is, would the devs be willing to create an .exe for this?

There would be no lawsuit. The only repercussion would be a court order to discontinue distribution, which would require EA to have lawyers file a complaint. Which they would not. Check PR.

That's pretty short-sighted especialy when you know how lawyers deal with copyright infringements in some countries, like here in Germany for example, people who make a living out of suing people for just doing the wrong step at the wrong time, even if it is not an infringment on purpose.

And this exactly is the problem, that Harmonikater explained. Distributing FH2 as a standalone using content and code from BF2 and redistributing this stuff is nothing else than ripping a cd with music and distributing it in the world wide web. Even without the copyright holder even taking care or knowing of the infringement, a certain group of people like picky lawyers will try to get you nailed down and earn some money. And they will not write a letter to roll back, they will send you a bill.

That's something that goes beyond some peoples horizon and sometimes it feels like talking to a group of five year old. Even if you explain it perfectly fine and with every information needed and some good reasoning, people will still insist on that FH2 devs are

a) totaly against horrible Standalone (wich is complete rubbish, as we all know of pros and cons)
b) too lazy or
c) just too scared.

Im going to go out on a limb here and say that C) seems to be the trend.

If PR with its thousands of weekly players and a much bigger public footprint still have not attracted hunter-lawyers since going standalone, FH will surely not do it. If anything, they will get PR first, with its much bigger distribution violation.

I really dont want this mod to dissapear into nothing, but for how long do you thing a mod like this will survive with a half filled server at average? My humble suggestion would be to go standalone, and push hard marketing towards ww2 game communities like Traction wars and Batallion 1944. If you do this right i see chances of 50-100% increase in active players, or even more!

if you look at PRs playercounts pre and after standalone, they went from 200-300 at peak players, to 900-1000 peak players after. Even now, a year after release, the playerbase is rock steady with 700-900 players during weekends. (even after the release of Squad)

And please dont think im being critical towards your work here, the mod is still amazing after all these years, but for a mod to be great, it needs a playerbase, or else you could just have dropped all MP support and used the time to NavMesh for bots instead.

shame that there seems to be such a hostility coming from the devs regarding this. I was hoping for a more constructive conversation. Have the devs even considered getting in touch with EA about this?

Also @jimi, there reason for low playercounts is not because of few servers, the reason for few servers is because of low playercounts :P

No we understand the logic just fine, and have discussed this matter since the day they announced the gamespy shutodown. But the question here is why you think it's perfectly legal to release an abandoned game? Maybe there's some laws about this that we haven't heard of.  And again EA not deciding to choose don't make it legal.

EA games have to activly pursue copyright infringement for it to be an issue, the case is that EA games does not give a single shit about BF2 anymore, also known as abandonware. This leads to a case where even the DMCA has excemption:

Quote
In November 2006 the Library of Congress approved an exemption to the DMCA that permits the cracking of copy protection on software no longer being sold or supported by its copyright holder so that they can be archived and preserved without fear of retribution

one could strongly argue that BF2 is no longer being supported by EA games, which enable us modders to preserve it by re-launching it with FH2 also included.

but this doesnt even matter.. the point here is if the devs want FH2 to actually thrive again, or just stay with the status quo and the current player population.

Last I heard, Battlefield 2 is still on the market:

http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-2-PC/dp/B0006SL93I
https://www.google.com/#tbm=shop&q=battlefield+2

you do know that you can just go to origin and ask for it in customer service and they will provide it to you for free?

Legally, I don't think the devs are as free to distribute a standalone mod as everyone thinks. I think there's a few other factors at play that the PR devs don't have to think about since they host their own website etc... That's really up for the devs to discuss tho.

I really dont belive that to be the issue, also they could just provide a mirror provider to avoid that.

So how do you think it's perfectly legal to release someone elses game? And EA not taking action against PR is not an answer, that don't make it legal per default.

Also. These days to install Fh2 you can just use the battlelog.co installer in which case installing Fh2 would be like:

Battlelog installer + Fh2 launcher

which isn't really hard or complicated.

Also note how when the community updater was released, nobody complained about the sudden increase in "complication". Just seems that in addition a to a free mod, you also want free pirated stuff from us.

Free pirated stuff? how can you say that when its an abandoned game that even the publisher hands out for free?  :) How can you "pirate" a free game? (and yes i know distribution laws etc). but when you have PR with a much wider audience having done it for a year now without reprecussions. its clear that the gain of going standalone is  far greater than the risk.

edit: also, if EA/Dice actually did take action, there is nothing stopping you from reverting to the current method..

So i want to bring this up with you guys, there has been a long time since i have played FH2. I have loved it since before the first release and i still love it to this day. But my question is for the community and mostly the development team. Should FH2 also become a standalone mod?

Im not going to bring PR into this, but they have proven that there is NO legal reprecussions from EA/DICE, so that only strenthens the pro-standalone stance. Be honest with yourself, how many new players will you obtain in 2016, with such an "advanced" installment process.

lets compare:

current method:
Obtain BF2 - download 1.41 patch - Download 1.50 - install 1.41 - install 1.50 - download FH2 - Install FH2 - play

Standalone:
Download exe - install exe - play

This also enable you to add Hash keys for each computer, making it alot harder for cheaters to avoid bans.

Lets try to have an mature and important discussion here, this really could change FH2 drasticly.

Looks pretty nice Theta. The knife handle and sharpener handle look like they're made from reindeer antlers.

Make sure to check what kind of metal it's made of and apply some oil or something if necessary. I forgot to clean off some blood from one of those souvenir knives once and it made it rust pretty quickly.
Yeah the finnesh seller said its Carbon steel and he explained how to take care of it. He also gave a small pot of oil for preventing rust. The handle is made of Reindeer antler yes. The cheaper ones were made of wood or plastic. These were industrial made however, the one i bought is handmade and you could see it compared to the other puuko"s he had. Despite costing the same, their were always diffrences in finish and construction materials.

Buy samish knifes, the best out there:
