Matt Baker's Texture Pack
Just like the Willy’s texture http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=19325.0 (http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=19325.0),
I’ve decided to extend the historical accuracy treatment to some of the other vehicles in FH2. This time I decided to compile some of the textures I’ve had lying around for a while and polish them off to put them in game. I'm releasing them now to share with you guys because I know a lot of people out there enjoy FH2 for its historical accuracy like I do :)

The vehicles I pick are usually really random and kind of whatever I feel like doing when I have free time. Right now I’ve reskined five more vehicles other than the Willys.

Again, I did a lot of research on this but I’m not a historian for a reason. So if anyone sees something that’s wrong or off, or if anyone has any suggestions or pictures of vehicles that actually fought in these battles, I can always change them up. :)

You can download the latest version of my Texture pack if you have the Community Updater: https://www.dropbox.com/s/aa2r076500t3jwn/FH2CommunityUpdaterSetup.exe?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/aa2r076500t3jwn/FH2CommunityUpdaterSetup.exe?dl=0) made by Harmonikater. 8)

Again, all of these files are full reskins of the vehicles so no .dds compression issues are present.

I've been playing with all of these reskins in-game and in multiplayer for a while now. I've had no problems being kicked from the server or anything; except for the occasional fact that these new skins are sometimes better camouflaged than the original ones, so you might have trouble hunting the tanks down 8)

Also, since the original FH2 textures are VERY well done, I decided to make sure I left them on at least one map so the devs original work is still in the mod. :)

List of what vehicles are on each map and some screens:

*note For this one I couldn't find any record of Stuart Recce vehicles that fought at Viller's bocage. But I did find photos of an M3A3 from the 7th Armored Recce unit that fought there. So I made the markings after those.
Note: Omaha Beach only map to use M5A1 Stuart with original FH2 texture.

Churchill

St Vith- 7th Armored Division, 17th Tank Battalion, Company 'A,' Vehicle #3
(http://i.imgur.com/zoZf0L9.jpg)
Meuse River- 11th Armored Division
(http://i.imgur.com/3ZwfP4v.jpg)
Note: Hurtgen Forrest, Bastogne, & Eppledorf only maps to use M4A3 & M4A3(76) with Original FH2 texture.

Since Meuse is more or less a fictional map, I put the 11th Armored Division on it with some interesting camo and markings that I thought would fit. Modeled after real winter Shermans.

I've also included all of the Willy's vehicle texture's in this texture pack so no reason to redownload those :)

Hope you guys download and enjoy it. I have a lot of fun making these skins and doing the research but I could always use some help in the research department ;)

Crits and feedback are always welcome of course.

Implement. NOW!

Awesome job, Matt :D

Edit: The Churchill skins are awesome. Especially that Tiger skin, the others have the detailed markings on them fitting the map, which is generally great too. Very nice Sherman skins as well. And the Cruiser skins look way better than the original ones. At least some of these should be seriously considered to be added.

Awesome job, always nice to spice up your FH2 with some extra goodies!

Even better if they are historically accurate!  :P

Thanks for the kind words again guys :D I hope the downloads work fine. If enough people care I can always update this post with more vehicles if I end up getting around to re-skinning them. (don't expect anything soon tho) And if you guys can hunt down any interesting markings or camos that you can prove are historically accurate for a map, I'd be happy to check it out :)

p.s. it goes w/o saying but credit to Toddel, Point Blank, Montoya, Kratzer and any other devs for the original models & UVs :P

Thank you for the compliments. I have applied to be a developer but atm don't have time to complete the application. :-\ work and school are taking up too much time right now. Hopefully that changes after I finish my education :)

What you see from this texture pack has been lying around in my hard drive for a few months. Truthfully, I could texture an asset in a few days but not with the schedule I have now. So until I get some more free time I just compiled these and released them. Hopefully more vehicles are to come :)

Friendly reminder that after each FH2 update or whenever you 'repair' your FH2 through the launcher you need to re-install the files from the texture pack. :)

Pain in the ass ik :P but it won't change until I can get someone who can write a script that unzips folders and replaces their contents for me automatically. Just something quick you have to do after each update ;)

Lets just stick all this into the mod and be done with it.  :)
Title: Re: [Texture] Matt_Baker's Texture Pack (Image Heavy)

a quick setup script:
http://fhbeta.warumdarum.de/~magic/mbtp_setup.zip

1. extract the texture pack into a folder (and keep it for reinstalls)
2. get this setup zip and extract it into the same folder
3. open setup.bat with a text editor and change the path to your BF2 folder in the first line

Each time after you have updated/repaired your FH2 build, just go to the folder with the texture pack and run the setup.bat

DISCLAIMER:
If the script has bugs and breaks anything (I didn´t do extensive testing) just run a "repair" with the launcher.

Ah! that's what I was looking for! a command to unzip the files. It was taking me ages to figure it out, especially since I've never worked with .bat files before.

Thanks a lot Mayhem :D

Post by: Mayhemic.MAD on 30-07-2014, 10:07:10
You can take it as an example, improve it and add it to your texture pack.
What i had to do was to bring the files into the same folder structure as used in the fh2 zip files.
Then I just used the 7zip command line app to add the folders with the textures into the zips (u is to update existing zip files)

If you re arrange your texture pack to match the zip folder structure, the .bat file can be much smaller since you can leave out the move/copy commands.

Also my script still uses move instead of copy, so you have to re extract the texture pack each time you apply it. I did this just for testing to see if all your textures would be gone after running the setup, as a check that i did not miss anything. If you want to be able to easily re run the setup more than once, "move" should be replaced with "copy".

I'd be very happy to see a generic hybrid skin for the DAK Tiger, similar to these:

or - if someone could point out a tutorial on modifying the skins... I'd give it a shot myself.

That's my cue
http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/tutorials/skinningdingo.php (http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/tutorials/skinningdingo.php)

this is a tutorial by jodonnell back in the beginning days of FH2. (He made the Daimler Dingo)
This was the first tutorial I ever went through step by step for texturing, and it's still useful to this day. Since then I've perfected my own ways of doing things but this is the best tutorial I've ever read personally. It assumes you have an intermediate knowledge of photoshop.

From there you can google other texture tutorials on the internet. It took me a few months before being satisfied with the textures I was doing.

I'd be very happy to see a generic hybrid skin for the DAK Tiger, similar to these:

Just wondering what you mean by hybrid skin? As in, the camo used the rotbraun and olivegrun instead of just the base dunkelgelb?

It could be anything, from monochrome to three colour camouflage + variations of that, depending on how you want to interpret the photographs. The '45 scenario gives a lot of "artistic freedom", since many of these last Tigers were coming from the driving schools and proving grounds.

Interestingly, almost all of these had an early hull - with new tracks and some type of hybrid turret, w. an old (e.g. drum cupola, MP port) and newer bits (e.g. zimmerit, reinforced mantlet, sometimes a lighter muzzle brake, new roof/cupola) + possible field modifications (like a debris guards on the mantlet). Only few of these had the late type road wheels, so the DAK Tiger would be perfect candidate for this (sans the Feifel filters).

Since there's a Berlin map coming, the 3./Pz.Abt.Müncheberg's Tigers were the last - operational - ones. I'd be glad to provide any further info on these vehicles.

For now, any washed out looking DAK Tiger, w/o any tactical number and zimmerited (worn) turret would be super.

...and newer bits (e.g. zimmerit...
Germans stopped using zimmerit during the war to cut the costs and time of production of their tanks, also because they were the main force to use magnetic bombs, none of allied forces had even produced them on a big scale so they were never a real threat for german tanks on the battlefield.

Dunno who told you that, but if you think so because of "Berlin Bleibt Deutsch" written on a wall on one of the screenshots in Conspiracies Thread, well, it was a popular late war slogan painted on the walls in a vast area around the Berlin, not only Berlin itself. Don't you think it would be way too easy if we reveal Berlin map like that?  ;)

Right, but the Zimmerit was still there on the recycled turrets. Sometimes it was even scraped off.. this collage might some idea (all these Tigers are "from" 1945):

That's a great idea to have the Zimmerit scraped off some of the tanks way later in the war, since it wasn't needed later on. I also found an interesting article on Zimmerit.

It is! (once you run the Community Updater) ;D

Overall, these textures aren't really necessary for the mod. They add a lot of files that are only really used once per map.

However, I actually have a few textures that have been officially included and you'll see in the next patch 8) hopefully more to come

Thanks for the comments guys. :)

@Ultrasoldier12 I'd love to make some BIA skins. The devs already did an amazing job on the paratrooper maps tho and there's really nothing that I could add to the player model skins that would make them better. There's some BIA references in my other textures tho ;)

@Rabbit032 the KT has so many badass camos that I'd like to see. You know what map it could be used on tho? Only Goodwood and winter maps have the KT afaik.

Hey guys, just a reminder to run the Community Updater and re-install my texture pack after updating to FH2.5.

Once you update to 2.5 it overwrites the texture pack so you need to install it again. It's a quick install.

I will hopefully be updating the texture pack soon with the Pegasus Camo for the PzIV and maybe some other cool stuff. Stay tuned.

@kev Not sure ??? Harmon is the one who created the updater. Maybe he could give you a work around?

http://www.762-ranking.de/site/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=183 (http://www.762-ranking.de/site/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=183)

IS-2
Also, I've been seeing a lot of questions about the markings of the IS-2 on Seelow Heights since the update. Since I created the diffuse texture, I can explain it a bit for those who care. ;)

104 Arm. Reg. 7th Guards Brigade

I chose the late-war markings of the 7th Guards Brigade who fought in and around Berlin during the final days of the war. Partly because they probably fought around the Seelow Heights area and because their markings were badass and represented the late war markings of the Russians in April 1945.

http://www.wio.ru/tank/oz/7gottb-en.htm (http://www.wio.ru/tank/oz/7gottb-en.htm)

The markings have plenty of meaning;

White Stripes
Soviet tanks during the 2nd World War were uniformly painted in very dark green. In 1944-45 tactical insignia began to be applied more widely, mainly to assist in traffic control during offensive operations. This IS-2 shows the elaborate markings sometimes seen towards the end of the war. The white turret bands and white roof cross were part of an April 1945 agreement between the Red Army and Anglo-American military leaders to prevent Allied fighter bombers from attacking Soviet Armored columns as the two forces met in Germany.

The Polar Bear
The 7th Guards Tank Brigade's insignia was a white polar bear on a red star. The badge was a result of the brigade's earlier service. At the time of the German invasion this unit was the 46th Tank Division of the 21st Mechanised Corps operating in the Baltic Area. After the defeats of 1941, it was reorganized as the 46th Tank Brigade and fought in the Leningrad Area. It was renamed as the 7th Guards in 1944 in recognition of its combat performance and took part in the offensive against Finland in the summer of that year.

In November 1944 the brigade fought against German troops around Petsamo in the Arctic circle. It was this campaign that the polar bear insignia commemorated. After returning from the far North, the brigade turned in its T-34 tanks and was re-equipped with IS-2 Stalin tanks. It was as one of the new heavy tank brigades that it fought in the last offensives against Germany, and took part in the fighting in the center of Berlin.

Tac Numbers
The brigade had three regiments, the 104th, 105th and 106th. The first digit of the tactical number on the turret identified the regiment. In this case the 104th.

IS-2 Heavy tank 1944-73 by Steven J Zaloga

A patriotic slogan in Russian (which reads "Stalinetz") is painted on the rear part of the turret.

Hope this clears some stuff up. This is just a small example of the painstaking historical accuracy that FH2 strives for. ;D

UPDATE: FW190

hey guys, no real time to post the pictures and history background, but if you update the community updater you'll find some new skins in my texture pack ;)

FW190 skins for all maps (except Totalize which keeps the original) ad a new PzIV skin for Dukla Pass and well as some small cosmetic updates to most vehicles.

Hope you enjoy!

Hi Matt, love your texture pack! If I may suggest something... it would be nice if you could consider making textures for British vehicles used on Greece maps or vehicles used by Canadians on their maps so they would be more distinctive. Sorry for my bad english... Keep up the good work! ;)

Note that the only difference for the Canadian vehicles would be markings, they had no distinct camo colours or something like that.

Yes I know that. I just think that if they are considered a seperate faction they should have proper unit markings on their vehicles. But I know these are just small details. If you think about it Jeeps in this pack also have the same camo and just different markings but they were textured nonetheless ;)
Title: Re: [Texture] Matt_Baker's Texture Pack (Image Heavy)
Post by: Matthew_Baker on 06-07-2016, 01:07:05
Yea, I always felt like the Canadians deserved their own set of markings for each of their vehicles. They are their own faction imo. It's also a little strange to see the Canadian marked Achilles on Villers Bocage and then the British marked Shermans on Totalize.

But right now I'm basing my skins of of what might help the devs in their future releases at the moment and releasing textures from there. Once that's done I can plug away at other random textures... we'll see ;D

Hey Matt, anything new? Also would you be so kind and tell what are your sources on these markings? I recently got interested in vehicle markings and I wonder if you know any nice books or websites about this topic.
Title: Re: [Texture] Matt_Baker's Texture Pack (Image Heavy)
Post by: Matthew_Baker on 02-07-2017, 22:07:45
Nah nothing new lately. I've gotten into playing RS2 and also trying to make a new map. That's taken up a lot of my time. If I can finish my map, It'll need new vehicle textures which I'm sure to do :)

Sources? I basically Google stuff when I need to know what markings to put for a specific map. But these websites always pop up and have great stuff;

American Vehicle markings guide;
http://olive-drab.com/od_mvg_markings.php (http://olive-drab.com/od_mvg_markings.php)

Missing Lynx is a military modeling website (mostly WW2) that has a ton of great sources about vehicle numbers or names or markings in general. Steve Zaloga the historian frequents the forums a lot afaik
http://www.missing-lynx.com/ (http://www.missing-lynx.com/)

Flames of War, another great modeling website. They do a lot of research on various things;
http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=3754 (http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=3754)
http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=590 (http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=590)

Russian markings;
http://www.wio.ru/tank/oz/oz-en.htm (http://www.wio.ru/tank/oz/oz-en.htm)

and Wings Palette is great for  aircraft markings;
http://wp.scn.ru/ (http://wp.scn.ru/)

Most good stuff is in books also, but those are hard to access. Osprey Publishing has a lot of great illustrations in their books that explain things very easily.

Yea, even I don't have the texture's installed atm :P they're on a separate hard drive somewhere and I haven't re-installed them on my PC. If I find time, I'll re-upload them so people can put it in manually.

Other than that Harmo runs the updater (I think), and I think he's still getting stuff in order for the CMP map-pack. I figure that once the updated CMP is ready my texture pack will also be available. Maybe if he finds time he can fix my texture pack for the uploader :)

Community updater doesn't work for me either, luckily I've found the texture pack on my hard drive (idk from where I got it). So if anyone is still looking for it, here's the link. (http://www.mediafire.com/file/fz7cbfcw27otdnf/MattBakersTexturePack.zip/file) To install this place the .zip file inside Battlefield 2/mods/fh2 folder, then open up the clientarchives.con file with Notepad++ (I don't recommend using the default windows notepad because it doesn't separate lines for some reason) and insert this line on top:
Code: [Select]
fileManager.mountArchive MattBakersTexturePack.zip Objects

I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but I remember after one of the early Eastern Front updates I had problems with texture pack due to this change:

"Changes from version 3.2.283 to 3.2.299 (2016-07-17)
  * M5a1_Stuart. Add missing rollers. (stubbfan)"

Basically what happened there was that texture pack erased rollers bundlemesh from Stuart's folder and game was unable to load any map with M5A1. So maybe it's the same situation here?

PS Can you guys add Texture pack as an option in the FH2 Launcher, as it is not included in Community Updater anymore?

??? The texture pack shouldn’t erase a bundle mesh file, it only adds new .dds files to the vehicles’ texture folder. Maybe it has to do with the way the launcher updates the files, which would be Harmo’s area of expertise.

ATM I believe he’s busy with RL and CMP stuff so idk if the pack will be available for some time :( sorry guys, I don’t even have it on my computer right now :P

Once I move into my new place, I’ll look at uploading the files and giving a manual instal tutorial

Yes, the texture pack is working perfectly fine. Been rocking it with both 2.53 and the latest 2.54. If you can't join an online server, it's definitely not because of this pack. Just sideload it as described a few posts above and don't mess with any other files.
