General Discussion / Re: Worst Map You Can Think Of

Na, you just don't know what a trauma hailar was. Just imagine somebody trusts an Arisaka in your hand and hustles you in some direction. And then you say suddenly hello to a T-34/85. While the landscape looks like this, just without grass, but with atomic green ground texture:

In some sense that was almost authentic though. When you fought here, you were looking forward to the desert.

FH2 Help / Support / Re: Dvd driver can't read regular Cds?
« on: 11-04-2009, 22:04:41 »
How Ironic. Can't really help you. But i got a _NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG.
It does not read any original dvds. It reads CDs with ease, tends to read burned DVDs after some tries, but does not read silver original disks. I suspect some software issue as I got these problems since moving from an Win2k based AMD system to an WinXp based Intel system. I got Assassins Creed and Fallout 3 on my desk, but can't install neither of them. I got the same drive twice, and both fail, thus it is even more likely due to a software issue. I've just browsed the web and the list of solutions and different attempts is rather long. Currently I'm thinking about mounting one of the drives into another computer, accessing that as a network drive. Though I'm not sure whether that would help. If you got a laptop, connect it your computer and access the drive over a lan network.

I still think it would be Op Cottage, if only for the fact that a tk fest would be the only historically accurate form of the map.

Off-Topic / Re: TANKS! Documentary Series.

No hard feelings please, but the first one was rather horrid. The "experts" looked and talked like amateurs adoring him above all means. And it makes a huge difference whether I talk about the "nice"-regiment or the "body"-regiment (meaning a bodyguard-regiment: cp. "Leib-Standarte").
And on top of that with Wittmann, the prototype of a nazi soldier is being documentated. From a moral viewpoint I consider that questionable.

General Discussion / Re: Which map do you want the most?
« on: 09-04-2009, 21:04:46 »
There were 2 versions of crete for FH1. An early and a late version. I think the late version was a complete new setup based on the layout of the old one. The early version had 6 flags, ugly terrain and excessive tank combat. There were matilda Mk1 and Daimler Mk1 among other tanks. Basically there were flat wide roads like ravines bordered by the hills. The layout reminded me a bit of adak island for FH1. However it didn't play very well and the new map version came with 5 flags. The british rearguard was removed from the hills in the south and moved north to the position where nowadays the monastery is. So with 6 flags again, crete is based somehow on both of the old crete versions. Though I must say that I prefer more strict maps with uneven numbers of flags, causing one of both factions to bleed more rapidly.

I like those ideas, though #3 is a bit queer and would leave room for all sorts of other weird requests.

Suggestions / Re: Bombers
« on: 09-04-2009, 21:04:26 »
I must say that the Beaufighter already gives me headaches. Everything bigger would too big for the engine at current mapsize. Not to speak of 16- or 32-player maps. I'd like to see big bombers, especially on large oversized naval maps, but that is far away currently.

Medium bombers were used for tactical raids, yes, but when it comes to dropping carpets I got a problem with that. 2 small planes could do the same job, but would fit much better to the mapsize.

Strategic bombing is something that should be implemented as a commander feature, if at all. An off-map airstrike similar to arti barrages.

You really play these? What platform?

Suggestions / Re: Universal Carriers (and other APCs)
« on: 08-04-2009, 22:04:13 »
I just realised something.  I'll put it to you.  Supposing the devs give the spawn point in APCs a try in 2.2.  I want to know if you would exempt any APC varients from the spawns.  I personally would not have spawns in the 37mm halftrack or the Stuka zu Fuss; but would have them in all of the universal carriers, as well as the standard hanomag.  Since no M3 halftrack has been annonced, I can't really comment on it.

I don't care. You could try so many different things. Limiting spawnability on mobile spawns to squadleaders or adding spawns to some vehicles only while others of the same type don't get. I believe that would be subject to the mappers. In the end it needs to play well.
And on top of that it could end all the mourning of those that want rally points. Squadleaders could spawn on vehicles then and lead their men into the battle. They just gotta take care of the vehicle somehow. That would not be less difficult but requires teamplay and communication. Thus a mobile spawn is a smarter rally point and more easy to balance for the mapper, IMHO.

I just posted about this in another thread, but I'd like to see mobile spawns. Most people would agree that halftracks of all sorts are deathtraps you rather avoid. But I think in the war they gave factual security besides mobility.

But as these vehicles blow up immediately when shot, it wouldn't make a big difference when adding a spawn, would it? I think it would be worth to experiment with such elements. You aint got anything to lose, do you? If the map is designed from scratch for such a purpose, it does not necessarily mean a contortion.

I think the effect when opposing such vehicles would be great. You shoot an incoming vehicle and the result would be that it backs out again while dropping people. It would disappear behind some cover but the enemy could lauch an ongoing attack from that position. You would probably call for a barrage, destroying the vehicle and temporarily silence that frontline section. I'd call that very realistic.

Community Polls / Re: Next Theatre

I thought about this. All votes indicate a majority in expecting the late western front. I just thought about the time after that. Rather nonsense, I know. But then you have a situation in which the german forces are complete. And you'd also have the U.S. forces and Brits in. Besides some minor battlefields, that leaves two large battlefields opposing each other that would require amost the same amount of work from scratch. Pacific and eastern Front. And "Hope" votes for Pacific and eastern front are both strong in numbers. I guess that will be an interesting discussion then.

Off-Topic / Re: Update on 1.5 patch

I want the DRM removed.
When using a unique key this is nonsense anyway.
And server fixes and Vista support are welcome.
Problem is: The patch might be able to mess up FH, bringing the need for an hotfix.
