Anyone know how to use CRU to set a low resolution like 800x600 on a laptop? Anyone who managed to do it without issues?

When I start the game, it always crashes. The problem seems to be that the game seems to switch to the 800x600 resolution which my display adapter does not support. I used to play it on my older laptop 4 or 5 years ago. I really want to play it now on my newer laptop. Any solutions would be appreciated.
I hear some people have used custom resolutions.....can I know how to use them?
