Title: Community Map Pack #1
Post by: [KamiKaze] Destroyer on 28-09-2012, 16:09:20
Like the topic says! =) Lets all gather and choose few maps for the first Community map pack! =)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Some answers of questions that i forsee before anyone asks them:  ;)

Community? Yes, as the fans choose the maps themselves, then it cannot be called anything else then map pack representing the community of this great mod.

Voting? Yes, the maps that are mentioned the most will be the ones that will take their place in the first Community Map Pack. You choose which maps will be included!

How big will be the pack? 5-6 maps max, to keep the size some what reasonable = easier accessability.

Will it be played? Yes, when the map pack content is finalized it will be online on VBIOS #2 Server!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, for voting, i suggest following system, write names of anything between 1 and 5 maps, like exemple below (Names of the maps here are hypotetical):
Battle of Mars 64 conquest, Last Samuraj 32 capture the samuraj, Braindead 64, Battle for Vodka 64 objective, Pavlov's Dog house.
Map size and mode are only optional, those will not have impact on voting, but will be useful for the server managers for sure =)

After one or two weeks time, i will count all the votes, annouce the voting over, and like said before the maps that will recaive most points will be the ones that will be mentioned most times =)

If you are unsure of which map to choose, or maybe simply forgot the name, then feel free to make use of my little custom map list (http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=18066.0) thread. Names out of this list works aswell ofcourse, as long as the map developer released the map to public =)

--Current Standing:--
7 Points = Warsaw Uprising
6 Points = Battle For Stonne
5 Points = Bloody Beach, St Mere Eglise
4 Points = St. Fromond
3 Points = Sedan Breakthrough
2 Points = Monte Cassino, Carentan
1 Point = Berchtesgaden
1 Point = Kelafonia (Pending)
1 Point = Kasserine Pass
1 Point = Valkenswaard
1 Point = Blood D-Day
1 Point = Operation Dynamo
1 Point = Arnhem
1 Point = Operation Nordwind FH1

So, Place your bets! Here house doesint win but we all do =)

Does this mean they gonna steal our maps again? :P
Title: Re: Official Fan Map Pack #1
Post by: [KamiKaze] Destroyer on 28-09-2012, 17:09:46
Steal? ;P I never really understood that way of understanding using something by all means to its porpose, and what other porpose have a map if not play it? Its not like they sold it or anything, people who made those maps that was borrowed should be happy that someone wants to play them instead of "Nooo! Its my map, and only i can play it!", i had a good laugh at that thread honestly ;P But, its old stuff. As far i am concerned VBIOS admins removed all maps that creators didint want to be used by VBIOS some time ago.

Thats it about the past :) Now for the future, it is mentioned above that maps have to be authorized to public use for them to be included. Which means, i will ask the creators (if their map will make it here) if they would like the map to be for public use IF the map is not otherwise released to public allready (most maps are) =)

Soo, dont be shy, out with it! ;D

I dont think you should call it official unless the devs decide to endorse it.

Unfortunately it won't work because a few guys called devs won't accept them...  ::)

Ok, changed to "Community Map Pack" =) Becouse discussing was not the point :D

And Natty, its not a mod, i feel it is of General Discussion type definetly. Making a map-pack i wouldint call "modding"...  ::)

Since we got past the name issue, just throw some votes please? =)

Apparently you do not comprehend the meaning of the word 'modding'.

FH2 IS a mod for for BF2. The process of creating a mod is 'modding'. Making maps (mapping) is a process most importand within the modding process.

Thus making maps is modding (creating content), and and this forum section is dedicated to modding, so this is where mapping go.

I dont agree with you, modding does not mean creating content. From what i understand of word "modding" is that it is synonym with "modify", which means changing partly, which is what FH2 did to BF2. However, making a map, you dont "modify" content, you use what exist in FH2. Okey, at some maps there are parts of minor modifications, but those are very small, and still require FH2 as their base, in my honest optinion calling map pack a "mod" is quite over of what that word represents. Becouse if we would call all maps modifications, then every map in FH2 would be their own modification... I also question your decision becouse, if this is "modding", then what is "FH2Tournament Custom Map Event #1: Italian Campaign Weekend- Starting Fri Aug 24"? It also contains maps that are "modified" in the same definition that you use to define this thread... It also contains a map-pack which is ment to be downloaded the same way this one is and then played... Well, allright, i know. You just hate me and want to kick my ass when you get opportunity, whatever, its allright =)

Lets just vote =)

My five:
1. Battle for Stonne
2. Bloody Beach
3. Battle for Stonne
4. St. Fromond
5. Warsaw Uprising 1944  ;D

I voted only for maps which I have already played a bit. However there are some other maps that I really liked and some maps which look promising, but I haven't already played them...

Updated main post =)

"Battle of Stonne is keeping the lead, having 4 points! Just tailing behind we see Warsaw Uprising and Bloody Beach! St. Fromond and St Mere Eglise are struggling for the 4th position! Aswell as we have a new contender, Monte Cassino!"

Ofcourse, its a joke =) When you vote, when i vote, we must all think of maps that we want to play, thats it, nothing more =) Its not a race of any kind =)

so you're a modder who makes custom/fan maps to a BF2 mod.... and you refuse to call your work modding?

so you're a modder who makes custom/fan maps to a BF2 mod.... and you refuse to call your work modding?

*aww... my head hurts, on that specific place right above my right temple*

Well, i dont =) I think its more proper to call it map-making, becouse like i said, if one would call all maps modding then one could consider all official FH2 maps as mods of FH2 no? As they all have (or at least that is the point) provide diffrent gameplay, so if one would be really extreme in taking the word modding, he could say that they all modify gameplay (like all custom maps do, in "custom" not the ones created by official crew of FH2 i guess) =)

Therefore, i think it is natural to split modding and mapping into two diffrent categories even if they sometimes overlap eachother. I mean, making map sometimes means to manipulate code or graphics to make it map specific, you could call it modifying, but the porpose is diffrent and it would be confusing with modding overally. For exemple, "Hey people! Lets play Operation Cobra mod!" would be confusing... Same with exemple, "Hey people! Lets play Warsaw Uprising mod!" would also be confusing... As mod, is something generally accepted as an modification that manipulates/replaces smaller or bigger parts of the modification source (here BF2 is source, and FH2 is mod). And i am yet to meet an exemple of a "mod" by this definition that can be played at the same time as its vanilla (like if BF2 players could join FH2 server and vice-versa). That is, where i would say, mapping and modding are taking two diffrent paths =) As my "mod" by your definition Warsaw Uprising, can be played without any modifications to existing FH2 and BF2 files ;)

But i guess, in the end, its all about what each one of us want a word to be, as words are only and always, an attempt visualisation of our intellect, nothing more, nothing less.

The exemple about FH2 WaW turnament shows that some map packs are "accepted" while others are "not accepted" through =) Nothing against that turnament, it was fun, just an exemple =)

Ste Mere Eglise & Berchtesgaden FTW
Allright, updated ;)

Sure =) Maps, mods, everything in development fits here, right, but map packs that itself is not much about modding rather putting together few maps into one file? But well, no problem, i guess nobody dies if this thread is here, just saying 8) Why dont you vote? It would be intresting to see your picks!  ;)

Geez get off the guys back & stop smacking him in the head with your Dick-tionary.  :P

I like this idea no matter what section its in.

Kettcar was working on something similar and somehow he go lost in Russia along the way.

I think you should get permission to add some of the Forgotten Honor & WAW maps and then include some of them.

Yes, thats a good idea =) Eitherway, dont be worried to vote on maps that are not in the "custom map list" thread.

I looked over that old thread of Kettcar, and a lot maps i didint knew exist i found there :D Problem is... Links are old, aswell as compatibility with FH2.45... However, we all want this map pack to be proper, so, if there is need to making a fix for it to FH2.45, i think it is worth the effort, just so the community map pack is true community map pack =)

So, Jimi, why dont you post your 5 maps? :D As you seem to have been active long on this forum, i am sure you can dig up few diamonds! If some of those are along the WaW watch tower, i will know what to ask them for specifically ;)

I think that becouse of the amount of maps (some might forget one at moment of voting, or change their mind later) i will have all votes open for edit until the voting closes =)

So, if you change your mind, just edit your voting post and replace however you like, when the voting will close i will sum up the votes from zero, so no worries, the "update" section might not be correct at moments becouse of this but the final points will be counted properly anyways =)

Before the voting ends, i will also make sure that all maps that are voted and might not appear entirely "open to public" are allowed by creators to be used for public play =) Communication on this thread will be the key, but, like i said, vote on any, and i will verify and tell you if the vote is "ok" :)

So, Turkish, i would suggest to write a list from 0 instead, so it will be easier for me to count it later aswell! ;)

3) Juin 44

5) Saaremaa

5-Carentan

I tried to pick maps from fronts we don't already have in FH2 mostly. Monte Cassino is the only one I have never played, I picked that one based on the fame of the battle and the screenshots. In both Warsaw Uprising and Valkenswaard I had a modest tester role, so it'd be nice to see them played on a full server.

1) Warsaw Uprising
2) Sedan Breakthrough
3) Monte Cassino
4) Bloody Beach
5) Valkenswaard

The way map-packs will work, is that if a map is included in map-pack #1, it will be updated with map-pack #2 if the update is avalible =)

So, would you like to wait or you think its okey if the map as it looks now is included in map-pack #1 (If enough votes are cast ofcourse) and updated with second map-pack? =)

For now the card will not be ready.

I must rule the problem of lag and fps drop-in games.
and I am having trouble with the new version 2.45 as:

one problem

can not download the file "undergrowght" for

\ Battlefield 2 \ bf2editor \ Content \ Land \ Undergrowth \

http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=1804.0

problem 2

No kit will appear in-game?

problem 3

What is this?

http://fhdev.dyndns.org/ ~ spitfire/fh2pub/2.45/map-pack-2.45.zip

instructions:
- Extract all the. Py files into mod directory (for example "mods/fh2")
- Run-map.py pack (or pack-map.py [mapname])

1). http://bfewaw.com/maps/tools/2.4Undergrowth.rar (http://bfewaw.com/maps/tools/2.4Undergrowth.rar)
2). and 3). You need this scripts to pack your map for 2.45, so it works properly (and solve problem with kits). Since 2.45 there is a new system of kit loading - only kits,  specified in tmp.con, are loaded.

Well, i guess its time to start voting myself =)

1. Bloody Beach (Looks very intresting)
2. Warsaw Uprising (Well, i would like to test it with more players!)
3. Arnhem (a Classic from FH1, love city combat)
4. St. Fromond (Would like to try this one)
5. Operation Nordwind FH1 (Look forward to tank duels / forest combat)

Other 3 i will think about, still few days to go =)

if I have a problem with the finalization of sript kit and I would give for one person to finish and pack the map. no problem?

Sure i can do it =) But if you give it a try yourself, you will see it is very easy! =)

(Manual way to do it i personally prefer)
1. First of all, look into FH2.45 kits how it looks, you will notice all kits end with "*.inc", otherwise they are the same i think =)
2. If you have custom kit, look at FH2.45 kits and make your kit look same, ending with .inc
3. Write all kits you are using (both spawnable and selectable) into your maps tmp.con, this is how my classic omaha looks atm:

rem Everything below this line will be ignored by packing scripts! $fh2_eof

rem ***  KIT LOADERS  ***
rem *** autogenerated ***

run ../../objects/kits/gw/gw_scout.inc
run ../../objects/kits/uw/uw_nco.inc
run ../../objects/kits/uw/uw_rifleassault.inc
run ../../objects/kits/uw/uw_lmg_limited.inc

run ../../objects/kits/gw/gw_rifleassault.inc

run ../../objects/kits/uw/uw_scout.inc

run kits/UW_PickUpEngineer.inc
run ../../objects/Kits/Spawnable/UW_PickUpSniperSpringfield.inc

The ones that begin with "../../" are original FH2.45 kits. The one with "kits/" is my custom kit folder =)

Soo, overally only diffrence if i remember correctly is that you load custom kits using tmp.con instead of init.con, as well as all original FH2.45 kits must now be included in the tmp.con aswell =)

;) Otherwise, as soon as this are possible to have a tutorial on the new way of doing with the kit and the "pack-map.py"
Title: Re: Community Map Pack #1
Post by: [KamiKaze] Destroyer on 01-10-2012, 20:10:49
Yes =) But just a note about "pack-map.py"! If you have custom kits, the map packing will end up wrong:
From my exemple above:
"pack-map.py" will turn "run kits/UW_PickUpEngineer.inc" into "run ../../objects/kits/UW/UW_PickUpEngineer.inc"
so, after you pack the map using "pack-map.py", open tmp.con from your server.zip and look if everything is correct =)

The tmp.con that is not packed after using "pack-map.py", will not be changed, so if the tmp.con inside server.zip is not correct then just need to replace it with the unpacked tmp.con =)

yes, so when I made the compaction in zip, I do not put the tmp.con after I added manually.

for personal kit I change the command line with "run... / ... / objects / ....."

Yes =) Just check the tmp.con inside zip to see if everything is fine ;)

"Warsaw uprising takes the using its rocket fuel reserves and moves to the front! Stonne and Bloody Beach seems to be a certain qualfication candidates within the 5 positions. St Mere Eglise a bit tired but not giving up the fight just behind the two! When is the vote closing?

And what about the mappack making it 7 maps? Then you can include all maps who got more than one vote. I know the original plan was 5-6 maps, but this is just one more and the pack will be very versatile that way: many fronts, many armies.

The voting is planned to close in 32 hours :D (18:00 Sunday GMT+1), i am thinking maybe better to make it few hours shorter, so that there will be some more time to play those on Sunday aswell! =)

Its a good point ;) I think i will run some testes to see what will be the size and how much the maps can be optimized size-wise (i encounter loads of copies of same files in many custom maps!), also will talk with RADIOMERSH about it =)

Sorry RADIOSMERSH, but in first post i wrote following: "Suggest following system, write names of anything between 1 and 5 maps" and everybody voted on max 5 maps, maybe 5-7 could have been a better idea, but its too late now! =)

Thanks for your vote =) However, if you could remove few maps so its max 5 maps :)

I can also just take first 5 from your submited vote, but maybe it would not be correct, well, tell me plz =)

Cheers

Voting Ended!  ;D

Annoucement: Now we will have to test all maps, clean any encountered errors, it might take a day or so =) When its ready, i will post a link, current estimated size is 215 mb, might change during testes through =)

Final results are following:

7 Points = Warsaw Uprising
6 Points = Battle For Stonne
5 Points = Bloody Beach, St Mere Eglise
4 Points = St. Fromond

3 Points = Sedan Breakthrough
2 Points = Monte Cassino, Carentan
1 Point = Berchtesgaden
1 Point = Saaremaa
1 Point = Kasserine Pass
1 Point = Valkenswaard
1 Point = Blood D-Day
1 Point = Operation Dynamo
1 Point = Arnhem
1 Point = Operation Nordwind FH1

We were considering 7 maps, but the size was just too big :/ But, there will be more map packs i think, so dont worry! =)
-----------------------------------------

I wonder if anyone got any suggestion on how the voting went? What was good, what was bad, maybe something could be improved? =)

Maybe make the voting with a poll? Right now people could change their votes (or maybe that's a good thing, I don't know). Also, during the voting new maps appeared. That's not OK. Those maps didn't have a chance to get in, as most ppl already voted. So maybe next time wait a tad longer before opening the vote, OR put a stop on new maps, as they don't have a chance anyway and might take away votes for other maps who did have a chance still.

Sad to not see Sedan in the mappack, but OK, maybe next time.

The DL link idsn't working, I get a "Not Found 404".

Last but not least: I really appreciate your time and effort, Destroyer, Radiosmersh and others who made this possible (of course all mappers too). A big thanks to all of you!!  ;D

...

Yupp, sorry, fixed link now! ;)

Sedan seems to be number 1 map for next map pack looking at the results!  ;)

Maybe the poll would be more "smooth" indeed =) This gave me an idea, maybe like this: First, votes on which maps should be included in the poll, then make a poll based on those votes to choose final 5 =)

Thanks for appriciation =)
