Finnish parliamentary election, 2011
« on: 17-04-2011, 23:04:10 »
So, the elections are over now. Iso jytky (eng. big bang) happened, small party True Finns became the 3rd biggest party in Finland.

So: here is the new parliament:

200 seats total

Party - Seats (lost)
National Coalition Party - 44 (-6)
Social Democratic Party - 42 (-3)
True Finns - 39 (+34)
Centre Party - 35 (-16) (former prime minister party)
Left Alliance - 14 (-3)
Green League - 10 (-5)
Swedish People's Party - 9 (+-0)
Christian Democrats - 6 (-1)
Others - 1* (+-0)

*Åland

Party ideologies:
National Coalition Party: Liberal conservatism, Pro-Europeanism
Social Democrat Party: Social Democracy
True Finns: Finnish nationalism, National conservatism, Social conservatism, Euroscepticism, Populism
Centre Party: Centrism, Agrarianism, Liberalism
Left Alliance: Eco-socialism
Green League: Green politics, Green liberalism
Swedish People's Party: Liberalism, Swedish speaking minority interests
Christian Democrats: Christian democracy

Now, I myself must say that I'm horrified. These elections were catastrophe. How can a party like True Finns get so many votes? Only thing I'm happy about that Centre Party lost so many seats, but that's about it.

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."

- Sir Winston Churchill

Now, your opinions people.

Some pros:
+ SDP got a boost
+ Centre party lost, plus they had a huge change in the people who managed to get elected.
+ The self-declared God Emperor of Finland, Paavo Väyrynen, was not elected for yet another term.

The con:
- In the worst case scenario, we are facing lovely four years of selective misanthropy, delusional xenophobia and short-sighted agenda with no real solutions backed up with few fancy slogans.

Centre Party: Centrism, Agrarianism, Liberalism
Liberalism? Centre Party? BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Seriously, they've got more than enough born-again Christians (laestadianists, to be exact) plus uneducated rural population in their core following to guarantee that the party as a whole will never become liberal in the generally accepted meaning of the word. Sure, some candidates in the southern electoral districts (where they have to appease the "Southern Media", a massive conspiracy aimed against the Centre Party) might harbour some liberalistic ideals, but a hardcore "centrist" is just an inch away from the True Finns, the main difference being that the Centre hides its true agenda behind political jargon and good old-fashioned "what I told you was true from a certain point of view", while the True Finns are openly regressive national-romantic isolationists.

I laughed too, that's just what wiki said. What you just said there is why I hate Centre Party so much. (yes, foreigners can take part in this discussion too. I know there has been a lot of talk about these elections in the european and even american press)

To some extent, surely. But then again they have that conservative wing, so you can't always know what the hell are they actually doing. It's a big clusterfuck, but at least there is one thing you can count on; they will stab you in the back at some point.

I've read that the leader of the True Finns, Timo Soini, made his final paper at the university about populism. No wonder those right wingers caught a few votes for them this time. We'll see what will be left of their ideas after 4 years. However, it will be more and more hard to keep europe together with fascists rising everywhere in europe. The result will be clear: Less weight and importance for all of the european countries in worldwide politics.

I usually imagine my own sounds with it, like `tjunk, tupdieyupdiedee` aaa enemy spotted, ratatatataboom

I'm happy that the candidate I voted got through (Sinuhe Wallinheimo, National Coalition).

There's one thing I wonder: the reaction to the True Finns' victory. People are angry that they won and make status updates on Facebook such as "I'm leaving this country". I'm personally quite interested to see what happens in the next 4 years. Will they keep their promises and surprise everyone by managing the country well or will they just get us into a deeper shithole than we are already in?

Sad but true. "Shithole" by Euro standards is "Golden shithole" for South East Asian states :P

So in what direction does the scales tip when it comes to pro-EU now?
I've read an article at CNBC a few days ago about the election and if one of the sides got majority they would probably stop the bail-out package aimed at Portugal. So which side is in majority with respect to this?

By shithole I mainly meant the current economical situation. Bail-outs are a risky business and if more countries need them the economy might go down again. Of course there are other minor causes of concern, Finland isn't the paradise you think it is. You shouldn't always believe the propaganda we Finns tend to spread about ourselves

@Miklas:
The government will likely be formed by National Coalition, Social Democrats and True Finns. Of these, Social Democrats and True Finns are both against the bail-outs. This might stop the bail-outs, depending on what kind of an agreement they end up with when they discuss about forming the government.

Ok so the government is going to be; liberals, social-democrats and populists who mix leftist and rightwing views. That's a nice cockblock government. We almost had that here, no way that's going to work.
