The BBC reports that armed forces boarded the plane. Although none of the Dutch media report any of it. Think one of the passengers even sad the doors were closed until they could get out hours later and that they weren't seeing anyone near the plane. Not only miss communication between pilots and air traffic control (atc) but also between the media

Story as I know it now:

Typical miss comm between pilots and atc (failure to make contact, which happens allot). Fighter planes are scrambled to investigate. Pilots of the airliner sees the fighter planes and ask atc ''if they are being hijacked''. Atc hears the words hijacked and sounds the alarm.

It got out of hand after a weird question of the airline pilots.

I guess two F16 pilots now know what 'It's all good, why are we over Den Helder, por favor no fuego' in Spanish sign language looks like.

Apparently the fighters didn't have problems reaching them, but instructed them to Den Helder to figure it out, since they were a little of course already and the tower was unclear over the flight and tail number. The tower established contact again only when the bird was on the Schiphol tarmac again. And yup, an anti-terrorist unit was involved. Bomb squad was already there, as Schiphol also discovered a WWII bomb lying around

I heard the birds go through the barrier this afternoon. The boys fly over Utrecht on a regular basis, sometimes they bang, sometimes they don't. Cool stuff I thought, and went back to work.

On this night's NOS Journaal they mentioned that the ATC could hear, and I quote, arabian music coming from the cockpit, which added to the confusion apparently. I haven't followed this at all today, but that's what I heard on the news rerun just now.
