Techniques for rifle shooting?
« on: 02-08-2011, 08:08:50 »
Alright boys, I just started getting back into FH2, I must admit, 2.4 feels 100% better than previous versions. My main problem is, however, that I am a major noob. I cannot shoot a rifle, be it bolt action or semi-auto to save my life. I see people like Dazlayer and Anubis always dominating with the rifle, pinging people who pop up from cover. I can never seem to hit what I think I am aiming at. Anybody have any tips or tricks on how to aim the rifles in order to ensure a better chance of hit. I mean it could just be that you will all tell me I need practice and to stop swearing in the wolf server. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Also, in game name is moose12345 and I'm constantly on wolf being a, I think Googel called me, a smart wise ass.

You gotta master the reflexes. Use cover and don't expose yourself for long. Pop in and out of cover, and take quick shots. When you meet another foe with a rifle try strafing left/right, then stop for a quick shot. While watching Dazlazyer I noticed how he strafed left and right, then stoped for a second  for a quick shot, I copied this tactic to great effect :)

Keep using the rifle, and try not to get into situations where you are at GREAT disadvantage to SMG dudes.

You can "quick-scope" and "duck-shoot" easy in FH2. While it isnt a scope, same technique works quite well (I did last night with m191903 on Pdh)

quick-scoping-duck-shoot is when you right-click and almost immediately as you're in ironsight you fire and then get back out from ironsight and then you duck at the same time. The controls will allow you to fire with full ironsight "aim" and you will be in cover when the enemy dies (Or if you miss!). I had ping 48 so I guess I was OK, i felt a fraction of  a tiny little lag when I strafe- or duck-shot, but when you do land the shots, it feels very "Equilibrium/Matrix" cool, as you move and shoot at the same time

Alot of people panick when they get shot at, just stay calm and take a shot. With a rifle it's probably the only one you get anyway. Another important aspect is leading a target, this is something you only really get the hang of after playing lots and it depends on your ping as well. Good tip is to wait for a player to either slow down from sprint to walk or stop entirely and make sure you're ready to fire of a round when they do. So yeah don't fire the moment you spot someone but wait for the best moment to get the kill. Because once you fire they'll know you're there.

Best advice try asking Major Koenig, the guy is just scary accurate with a rifle. Believe it's about 50% after 6000+ shots fired.

FH2 uses a fake sway animation (bullets still come out from the center of the screen) so don't aim where the iron sights are. You need to aim at the center of the screen. To fight the fake sway, instead of aiming a target for like 10 seconds just unzoom and zoom back the iron sights will be set back to the center of the screen, then you shoot where they aim. It's quick scoping like Natty said :P.

Yeah! Eventually you will be good enough to act like you are shooting lasers when you kill people.
Deadly and accurate  :)

i think whether you do win or not do win a firefight with rifles is mostly a matter of who has the better position. i always try to get into positions where nobody expects me. i try to attack the enemy from the side or rear, head on its rather a 50/50 chance, but when you are in an ambush position you will win.
when you are in a house stay a meter behind the window so you are harder to spot, if the enemy is firing at you dont pop up in that window again, because with those laser beams in FH2 you will be dead.
in ambush positions you also have more time to aim.

another thing is that people get nervous when their first shot didnt hit, sometimes its a good idea to go for cover and when the enemy has fired his first shot to pop out and fire back. if the enemy tries to bunny hop dont shoot at him when hes "in the air" - wait till he hits the ground again and then shoot.
also i dont zoom in close combat (less then 20 metres).

other then that you will get a hang of it anyways after some hours of playing.

If you're not used to the ironsights, you need to realize where to put the sight, so the bullet will actually hit.

The rifle with the best sight is the K98. The cone isn't blocking your view. The bullet will exactly go where the last pixel of your cone ends. So you can aim at the target, while only a very small share of the target person is actually covered by the pin itself. Makes it very easy to adjust your aim when the target is moving.

The british enfield rifles are rather shitty to use for a beginner. You don't have a cone but rather some block. If you want to hit with the enfield, your target person needs to be half-covered by the block. If you aim at some head and want to hit the nose, the chin, mouth and mustache needs to be fully covered.
I have the tendency to aim too high on the enfield. Covering the complete person. But whenever the block covers the complete person, my bullets go above.

I usually imagine my own sounds with it, like `tjunk, tupdieyupdiedee` aaa enemy spotted, ratatatataboom

Imho, teaching shooting for FPS on forum is same as teaching how to drive car, maybe even bit harder. Play, play and play, that's my advice.

IMO the best rifles to begin with are indeed the mauser, Carcano and Lee enfield Pattern 17

I cant hit shit with the Carcano'. It seems so easy, just point it like the K98 with the sight set on someone's torso and pull the rigger. But I always seems to miss with that sucker.

A bit topic related, do you really have to aim high with the sniper rifle on long distances. After playing this mod from the beginning this is still the only weapon that baffles me on occasion.
